Very rusty and old Scales restoration, this Antique Scales were made in 1851 year, they were once used in the Market and in the household and today we use small Kitchen Scales and then there were only such.
My neighbor found them in the field in my village, they were plowed by a tractor. They are extremely rusted and some metal parts are bent, once this Scales were shine like a mirror and had good accuracy, so it's time to restore them. It will not really be an easy restoration, they have a lot of corners and bends.
RESTORATION: I sprayed an rusted axis with silicone and took out by using a hammer, this also released the Clip which was then soaked in hydrochloric acid. I clean the rust off metal with angle grinder. Beam or rocker arm was polished with sandpaper to shine and then with paste to a mirror finish, by the way this rocker arm is made of hardened steel, clip and "earrings" was cleaned with a metal brush, it made a contrast. It was necessary to take into account that the beam had to be smooth and I could not remove more metal on one side, it would destroy their accuracy so it was extremely careful and precise work, small things was cleaned and polished with a small electric engraver. Straight round and mini files helped me a lot in restoration, as well as various cones for straight grinder and mini engraver. I make new leather strap for these hand Scales and riveted them with copper rivets which was made of thick copper wire.
I really lack Sandblasting for my further restorations or making things, all my videos is done outdoors, currently in my arsenal are only a hand power devices, It's not easy to do quality things despite the lack of tools, but still have a dream of having a real lathe for metalworking or for woodturning and other serious equipment.

The restoration is very true to the photographs of stores seen in the 1850's . The fine polish was for three reasons 1. the polished surface was associated with cleanliness. 2. a clean well balanced scale meant the customer was getting what they payed for. 3. a true balanced scale was good for the store owner's reputation and to keep it true all you had to do was keep it oiled and polished.

Some food for thought from a new subscriber. When repairing any type of balance beam scale such a this, remember it must have a pivot point otherwise it will not function properly, the more sharper the pivot is, the more accurate your scale will be. This unit is not actually a weigh scales per se, but rather an "over an under" scale . Whatever dry product.., lets say wheat is being placed on one side of the scale, it is measured against a known weight on the opposite. If the weight is under, more product is added to the sack until it balances, the opposite action is applied if the weight is over. The part you referred to as the axle is called the pivot and the part that it rests on is called the V-block. For purposes of accuracy or something closely related to.., the pivot should be somewhat pointed and it should rest in the center of the v-block that should be a shallow V instead of being rounded like a saddle. With scales, the more surface contact you have at the pivot point / v-block the less accurate reading you will get. Friction at the balance / pivot point can throw any scales off in pounds, this will be exaggerated by the amount of weight applied. Given the fact that this Over and Under will probably end up as wall art, no harm, no foul. You did a good job with preservation

Хорошее восстановление, но не защищённое железо будет достаточно быстро ржаветь, желательно провести либо его покраску либо воронение.

Technically it’s a beam balance. Not a scale. And it’s not “accurate”. Without the pan and weights you can’t tell if it’s accurate or not. But it’s pretty. Nice and shiny.

Not a restoration. You took most of the handworked character out of it with the grinding and polishing. Doubtful that it would have been polished in 1851. More than likely it would have been hammered out of black iron and either left in the raw or given a beeswax finish. And 1851 would be the 19th century .

congratulations you have ruined an antique, this scale is no longer worth anything, it's just a foundry iron Have you ever seen refurbished artifacts in museums? Obviously not. You had to limit yourself to cleaning the iron from rust and protecting it with wax from metal

honestly you have no clue what restoration mean. What you are doing is reparing and altering the thing. Restoration means you restore something does it look like it was the same as when it was produced. you just make things shiny again.
