Maintenance or restoration of some German m.1889 IOD degen is easier than you may think. The whole assembly is kept together by a finely machined threaded pommel cap.
By simply removing the cap, you can take the whole sword apart and ensure you have access to all parts of the sword that may need work, cleaning, or substitution.
In this video we look at the process of disassembling an IOD 89 sword, and putting it back together.
As always, when it comes to working on antiques swords, make sure you know what you are doing, and are aware of the risks. Once you damage your sword, there is no going back.

I was delighted to find your video; I have exactly this sword, it has been in my family for a long long time. I have done an external polish/restore but could not see how to remove the pommel cap - great hint! Need to re-wrap the wire and keep conditioning the leather and I think it will restore fully. Scabbard has surface rust and I need to figure out how to attach to a sword belt - missing some pieces there. Bravo for a clear and concise video on exactly what I have been working on!

Awesome video, thank you. I have two variants of thus sword, one with a folding guard and one without. The one without the folding guard is a service weapon (sharpened with unit markings, dated 1890). It came right apart after i removed the nut. The handle is made from bone, though - not wood - so maybe that has something to do with it. It was in terrible shape, so im doing a full restore on this one. Your video was very helpful.

Thank you, I'm very glad it was useful! I suppose bone may warp less than wood, but it's also possible some swords just come apart more smoothly. In any case, good luck with your restoration!

I need a new grip for one. Where can I get a grip for a 1850-60s Civil War Cavalry sword?

Sourcing parts can be tricky. Sometimes auctions mace some batches of parts, and some dealers or marketplaces may as well, but there's no guarantee. Alternatively you could try an find a relic sword and cannibalize the grip for yours.

Touching the Blade without Gloves ( usually Poison is applied to the blade ) is it safe ( ? ) -------

Never heard of poison being an issue on antique blade :) What can be a concern, however, is the damage fingers and skin oils can do to the blade, but as long as the metal is properly cleaned and maintained that is not usually a problem
