Hi peter, thank you for the video it gives me great insight. Actually i stumbled to this video because I am a bit curious. I have a piece that has been in my family for decades, ever since I could remember. Its a very interesting piece, but I cant seem to find one similar. I dont even know if its a vase or a bottle. The piece has a painting somewhat i think of two warriors fighting, and the backing has a red inscription in chinese character "ming". Would you mind helping me take a look at it? I would love to send pictures of the piece to you via email.

As I was watching the video, I don`t know why it dawned on me, my father, who spent his childhood in Canton from 1917-1936, always painted our wodden house green and pink....of course! Tang colours in a house properly facing south! Uncommon colours for Costa Rica which I finally undestand.

Thank you. I have inherited a beautiful xuande calabash vase. Slight blueish-greyness to the white glaze. Peonies/plum with one ?magpie in the flowers. Very delicate and thin. The bottom is glazed white. The bottom rim is narrow and so clean. There is a vertical 6 figured signature in calligraphy on the shoulder where the decoration has lessened towards the back. The signature looks like a 'Shen Du' type. Quite small writing but I've read that this is the case with his type of signatures. The actual calligraphers of that time DID copy his calligraphy. There are no cracks or chips. It is immaculate. My Mum inherited it. I just feel this could well be a genuine Xuande double gourd vase. Where the deep blackish blue is heaped and piled, there are some little tinny looking marks that show up if I shine a torch on it. I used to gently blow across the top of it, when a child, (Mum held it,) and it sounded like a flute! Would you guess its value, if genuine? Perhaps I ought to add that my Mum's grandmother was a good friend of Oscar Wilde.

Subscribed! I thought the exact opposite. That the brownish tinge on the footrim would have meant it was old and had seen a lot of cabinets or tabletops throughout the years. Then had been dirtied up or stained. 🙏

@mikeharrington5593

You are really highlighting a kind of madness in the Asian antiques world. If today's potters can reproduce the quality of the ancient porcelains for a fraction of the price then the problem is in people's heads of coveting and buying historical artefacts at crazy prices, usually because they want these "assets" to increase in value (viz greed).
@charlotteritchie3338
@charlotteritchie3338 4 года назад
Mike Harrington I’m no great collector or anything, but I think most collectors want the original porcelain because it is a piece of history, from a time of such a rich culture and deep artistic tradition. Personally, I have no interest in fakes or contemporary copies no matter how authentic they might appear, and how much cheaper they may be. I buy mostly Chinese porcelain in the under $500 category anyway, but there are many beautiful objects in that range.
@CardHandlers
@CardHandlers 3 года назад
Did you really just ask why new ones are not as expensive as vintage pieces? Supply and demand. There are hardly any vintage ones left, therefore, they are expensive.

@PeterCombs
@PeterCombs 4 года назад
You can use traditional Oven Cleaner i.e "Easy Off", or FANTASTIC works fairly well. Either of these can be used on the entire piece, just do not get EASY OFF on any gilding as it will strip it off. Porcelain enamels are impervious to the stuff though. Best Peter
