This randomly reminded me of the time when I tried to “help” my grandpa download a random “PC Repair Kit” from the internet onto his Windows XP desktop (mind you, I was 12 at the time, and we had just gotten it back from the repair shop after it got infected with ransomware, so I genuinely just wanted to help keep his computer safe so he wouldn’t have to pay to get it repaired again). Apparently it marked at *least* 600 items as potential viruses, many of which were literally our personal documents and photos. Thankfully, my grandpa was a lot more tech-savvy than I initially gave him credit for, and he figured out right away that it was a scam and uninstalled it. He got rid of that computer years ago now, but even to this day I still feel guilty about it.
2 years late. You really shouldn't feel guilty 'bout it. I was the same basically when I was 12. Now I've fixed and cleaned of badware stuff a lot of computers, but still... I probably had infected mine a lot more times when I was a kid) I'm a programmer now. Hard to tell why I was so dumb, but... we probably can understand each other. We were just naive, learning the cyberworld around us. But I was also dumb af ngl.

imagine using this antivirus for years not knowing that its a scam, then a year later you download malwarebytes and then u see the scam antivirus was scanned and detected as malware.
Same, I remember restarting my computer and it came up with a logo of the anti-virus program along with 'fixing your computer of malware'. Dad was not impressed when I said the anti-virus was stopping me from playing my games

i oddly had one of these viruses on my old mini laptop as a kid. The weirdest part was that it hijacked the background and said something like "if you want to protect your family, your friends, etc. buy the license" or some shit like that with a bunch of ones and zeros on a red or blue background. i just shrugged it off and continued my life like normal and took my dog for a walk on a warm winter day. about a month later i came back to the laptop and all the files were magically gone from the virus. it deleted itself or some shit.
I remember I was infected with this in 2010/2011, or maybe a very simillar variant of this rouge with just a different year in the name. The funniest thing is that that computer was running XP with Norton Internet Security from that period. And Norton "stopped a network attack" which apparently was somehow the injection of this rogue, but it happened again after like a minute and it got past. Of course it was all my fault after all, because I was 10 and I was playing flash games. Or at least that's what my father thought. Ah, Symantec. If they made condoms, they would make both partners pregnant. And I regret I wasn't that much into computers back then. I'd love to grab a sample, if it's that rare.
We had this virus in the computer lab at middle school. Except there wasn't a "Dismiss" option for when it popped up its "Threat detected" window. You couldn't run anything: no Explorer (except for the Desktop process), no CMD, no RegEdit, no Task Manager... Anyways, the IT admin asked me to help him clean the virus form the lab machines; he gave me a printout of instructions to do it. Turns out, someone disassembled the virus, and there was a hidden "license key" that you needed to type in the "Activation" tab and you could then run programs. From then on, it was: launch RegEdit, remove ".exe" association, remove autostart, then remove the malware's EXE. As far as I remember, it even dropped itself into %AppData% or smth. I wanted to grab a copy of that virus to extract the resources from it (it had a really cool window, you see), but I don't think I did (or at least I don't think I have it anymore). I might have the printout in the bottom of some binder though.
I'll never forget when my dad succeeded to download this on his laptop, and while I was working on the removal he borrowed my PC. Sure as hell it got the same "antivirus" within 24 hours

It reminds me of one time a vista laptop (that is still working till this day btw) got like 1000 viruses all at once while i was in a friend's house and my mother called me asking me to help her understand what was going on and i could hear my father just grumping out in the background. So i had to come back home early than usual because if not he could might literally tried to buy the thing, because when i came home there it was the laptop with this kind of "thing" sitting in the desktop throwing "potential risks" like every 4 minutes, something was getting infected, compromised or just plain broken because of some unknown reason that even the software that was specificly meant to fix the issue didnt knew what it was, of course it didnt knew until you gave him some bucks that is, if you payed then that's when the program could let you know what was the issue. So i did some research and the real problem was the program itself, didnt knew about the definition of Rogue Programs before but that day i had a crash course, if i just let the program sit in the system long enough it could had gotten worse and worse, like after a couple of hours it could had started doing fake BSOD's then blocking or stoping servicies altogether, after that it could literally start doing real BSOD's because it could start corrupting system functions because it wasnt essencially well programmed to begin with, and then the system could be a total mess and you only way of "fixing it" could be lending money to the "developers" Then i just searched how to remove it, and with some help of malwarebytes, some registry editing and some manual deleting and a restart the thing was totally obliterated, if it wasnt for me searching the program on google and then reading about it i could just had done massive damage to the system by just letting the program in the system long enough.
