This is a tutorial on carving antler from the 2013 Swords Through the Centuries Hammer-in hosted by Falling Hammer Productions. The demonstration is presented by Jamie Lundell of Falling Hammer. Before this demo, Jamie had drawn out his design in pencil on the moose antler and scribed in the lines of his layout. He explained not to use permanent marker, as it will absorb into the antler and be tricky to clean up later in the process. Make sure to check out part 2: • Antler Carving Tutoria...

Wow, I can't believe the information and age of this video, thank you so much for passing your great knowledge to the next generation of craftsmen and women! I desperately have been wanting to pick up my grandfather's traditions of wood and bone carving and I knly knew him for a few years as a child so I wasn't given all of the tips. ❤️

No comments! What a freakin' tragedy. I was actually at most of this presentation (I was the guy carrying the big dao). Still, this is good enough to watch over and over. Jamie, Peter, Michael, and Matthew are each highly-talented craftsmen in their own right. When they work together, it is just killer. or magical. They deserve more recognition (and business)!

Hello! I recently acquired a large number of whitetail deer antlers and have interest in carving them. Any suggestions on what sort of tools to purchase? I am entering a fly-rod building contest for disabled veterans and figured starting with a rotary tool was the way to go. However, after watching your videos of more traditional methods, I became more interested in these sort of techniques. Are standard wood carving tools acceptable, or should I fashion my own from high carbon steel?

+Johnny Farnen Just noticed your comment... we have had good success with standard wood-carving tools. Rotary tools can be much faster, but the finish that they leave is generally fairly rough. If you use a rotary tool you generally want to "stipple" all of the background because this is a very efficient method of evening out the uneven finish left by the bits. A sharp chisel will leave a smooth, almost polished surface, generally with some faceting left over from the multiple cuts. Many carvers use a combination of tools, switching back and forth between cutting tools and rotary tools to get the design and finish they want in the most efficient manner. Wear a respirator any time you use a power tool on bone or antler, since bone dust is bad for your lungs.

Guy it the background talking about getting antlers from a cousin in ohio. Do you have a permit for those antlers?

@@AmarilloMusicAB better not. Permits are required for all antlers or any other animal parts unless they are true sheds. Especially across state lines of any state. With the diseases the deer species are getting, plus hunting being a multi billion dollar industry, there are hefty fines and jail time without proper permits...should someone get caught. Did you know that before you posted or no?

@@carcasscruncher9354 Did I know that? I’m a state wildlife ranger. Also I never heard him say specifically that these were hunted antlers. Depending where you live, you might get enough true-sheds to negate ever hunting em. Plus once the permit AND the appropriate tags are acquired, you are entitled to keep any deer body part your heart desires.
