Antonin Dvorak who captured the Bohemian soul. I'm a norwegian grown up with Edvard Grieg who also captured the norwegian sound. You can't miss them when you listen to their music. Walking around in Prague and going to concerts in Smetana hall is confirming this special athmosphere of Dvoraks music. So beautifully expressed in this 8. symfony alegretto gracioso. Dvorak frequently seems to be saying, "I'm reasonably happy now, but dark moments are always around the corner". Smetana does the same thing. The Czech character?
I always feel like i'm a elegant woman in a gala dinner (or political dinner) with my future husband when I listen to this movement. It's a great and exciting scenery, like I could do everything in my life. Like "ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE, IDIOT! IT'S NOT A DREAM, IT'S ONE AMONG OTHER EXISTING REALITY!". Dvorak's music make me to size better my life and the world around me. Music, art and literature are similar in that sense, it takes us out of our little room and throws us into a universe of different possibilities.
I was watching Tokyo Ghoul, heard some music in the background, said to myself: "I've played this before. A while ago. Hmm... I'm getting Dvorak vibes. Is it a middle movement of Dvorak 8?" I am so proud of myself for how quickly I figured it out.
I'm not entirely sure, but I believe it is a recording by the New York Philharmonic with Kurt Masur as conductor. I thought this recording was released somewhere in 1994 on an album together with Janacek's Sinfonietta's. I'm sure you can find it in ITunes.

Lovely lilting melodies when played by the strings. Less succesful when the other instruments take centre stage. How this can be called Allegro is not easy to understand.
