Anton Batagov plays Bach. Live at the Moscow House of Music, part 1 

Огромное спасибо! Столь самобытное восприятие Баха - «кристаллическое». Мне приходило раньше в голову, что в музыке Баха есть «потоковая виброритмия» как у Филипа Гласса. Особенно, например, сольный фрагмент в конце первой части ре-минорного фортепианного концерта... поэтому Рихтер играет его, не сбавляя звук, как бы «монолитным ритмическим потоком» (в отличие, скажем, от Гульда, который там затихает, слушая полифонию и фразы). А у Антона Бах звучит как бы с огромной «гравитацией», вне движения времени, как тектонические пласты и лучи, пронизывающие разломы... как огромный и сложнейший космический кристалл. Очень здорово и по-новому! СПАСИБО!🙏

Ludwig B. once said Bach is the ocean. I think what Batagov is doing here is showing us what was going on beneath the surface of that ocean. No flashy surface waves, just the deep, majestic currents of that sublime mind. I am so grateful to really hear this music for the first time. And that left hand!

возможно, именно так надо исполнять баха на ф-но: медитация, а не гонка, как мы это часто слышим у современных пианистов!! музыка совершенно иначе звучит. и звучит именно музыка, а не беглые палцы!! брависсимо!!!

No no. This will not do. I have Batagov's recording of Messiaen's Vingt Regards. It's absolutely amazing and one of my favourites. I had high expectations for this video. I couldn't make it past the Courante, and almost didn't get through the Allemande. We have plenty of evidence in the music of other composers of the era, as well as in documentary accounts by (sometimes quite knowledgeable) observers of the era regarding things like the use of tightly sprung rhythms, double-dotting and the like in the opening section of overtures in the French style. And indeed, When Batagov repeats this section, he plays it magnificently. But then all the energy and tension is drained out of the fast section of the overture by his slow tempo. As for the Allemande, yes, there's lots of evidence to say that Allemandes in Bach's time were definitely not fast. More of a "moderato", But there's nothing to suggest that they are Adagios. Regarding the Courante, the very name of the dance means running. That must be respected. Having said all that, Batagov's tone production here (as in his Messiaen) is superb - beautiful, and beautifully controlled. I'm willing to try him in almost anything, but sadly, I think he's doing Bach a disservice here.

I love Batagov playing P.Glass. He plays Bach way too slowly, sucking music out of the composition and toss it like an empty skin
