The opening theme brings to mind the journey of man, his steps in the route of life, with his pains, his intimate passions, and the faith in the divine providence expressed by the tutti- fullness of the orchestra, but also the intimate and ecstatic moments in the long path of earthly existence. I'm over 60 and I've been listening to Bruckner since I was only 18. Danke schon Meister Bruckner.
!’ll soon be 69 (can’t believe it) and have been a fan of Bruckner since my first LP’s bought in my high school years. Listened to a lot of Mahler back then as well. Anyway, big fan of Bruckner. Indeed, I named my son Anton. Just love the slow evolving nature of his work which make the climaxes so ecstatic, meaningful and cathartic.
A year ago I broke down and have been paying for premium, it’s been transcendent. Of course they recently raised the price which drives me nuts, but, not as nuts as the insufferable adverts do!
Probably a good place to start. Beethoven kinda ruined symphonic writing for romantics in the early to mid 1800s. Beethoven set a high bar that everyone was too "scared" and unable to match. How do you follow something like that? Little did they know that it took Beethoven 20 years of notes to complete it. So schubert is good starting point. He was a better composer anyway, and Bruckner probably knew it.
