Anton Rubinstein (1829 - 1894), 2 Melodies, Op. 3 (1852)
Performed by Balazs Szokolay and Joseph Banowetz respectively
00:00 - No. 1 Melody in F major
04:00 - No. 2 Melody in B major
Rubinstein was 23 years old when he composed two Melodies Op.3. The work was undoubtedly Rubinstein's most well-known compositions, and while it may be easy to dismiss these salon pieces as mere pot-boilers, they contain many of the musical qualities that define Rubinstein at his best. The once-famous Melody in F is beautifully laid out for the keyboard, as the two thumbs play a simple melody inside the downbeat-offbeat pattern of the outer voices. A short chromatic transition passage leads to the return of the opening melody and a short, attractive coda. The Melody in B major provides a delicate contrast to its more famous companion. Here once again an elegant, long-breathed line is placed in the middle of the keyboard, surrounded by the gently pulsating outer voices.

Creepy fact: the time difference between us listening to that 1940s song is about the same difference between that and Rubinstein writing this piano piece.

These could easily fit within a Mendelssohn Songs Without Words set.

As concept, maybe, 'cause the language is rather different.

I wouldn't say it's Mendelssohn though. The first one reminds me of Schumann and the second one Liszt/Alkan.

Schumann? Sounds a lot more like Mendelssohn to me. Probably the Spring Song.@@CatkhosruShapurrjiFurabji

At 4:32, why is the chromatically descending bottom line of the right hand omitted?

Give a check on fundamentals of the russian piano school, the weight transfer to the thumb is probably the "secret" of this playing

If you're talking about the first, you might consider using both hands for each chord, thus freeing a single finger, or two at the most to bring out the melodic top note. :-)

I agree, too many repetition with no variations over the main theme. It's kinda boring. But it is nice, could be developed more though.

Whoa, you both COrNotToC and David Trainer take everything too seriously, don’t you? May be just true is Opus 3 and yes, is a lovely piece, but is not a masterpiece or perfect and is not exonerated of possible criticism.
