Tho the orchestra is of modern violins and winds, they are sensitive to baroque style. Vibrato is minimized, tempos are brisk and articulations are light. This also allows the soloists to sing in a more moderate baroque style. Love the entire performance and sets. Thanks to the conductor.

@@mariaelenabecerra2069 And also to Hasse, Giacomelli, Leo and Sarro :) Please, don't forget that the only surviving version of 'Dorilla' that can be performed today is the 1734 pasticcio score and around half of the arias you are listening to were written by these composers, especially Hasse and Giacomelli :)

DIEGO FASOLIS, né le 19 avril 1958 à Lugano, est un organiste, chef d’orchestre et chef de chœur suisse. L’un des interprètes les plus passionnants de sa génération DIEGO FASOLIS, qui a fait ses débuts au Festival de Salzbourg en 2014, joint une polyvalence extraordinaire à une virtuosité souveraine. Son exigence stylistique est largement plébiscitée par le public et la critique bravo pour sa carrière musicale. ANTONIO VIVALDI renaît avec un splendide opéra, DORILLA IN TEMPE, dirigé par le maître DIEGO FASOLIS. Illustration parfaite de la créativité d’ANTONIO VIVALDI, l’opéra DORILLA IN TEMPE donne à entendre une musique variée, jouant des passions et émotions humaines. Représenté pour la première fois au TEATRO SANT’ANGELO de Venise, à l’automne 1726, sur un livret de ANTONIO MARIA LUCCHINI {vers 1690~après 1730}, l’opéra DORILLA IN TEMPE vient se placer exactement au milieu de la carrière de VIVALDI, qui dura vingt-cinq ans. Le compositeur a alors quarante ans et est à l’apogée de sa carrière. Peu de temps auparavant, le 14 décembre 1725, la Gazette d’Amsterdam avait annoncé la publication de son fameux recueil, opus 8, IL CIMENTO DELL ´ ARMONIA e DELL ´ INVENZIONE qui comprend les QUATRE SAISONS, qui allait rapidement augmenter et consacrer la renommée internationale du musicien vénitien. DORILLA IN TEMPE fut repris à Venise au théâtre SANTA MARGHERITA, en 1728, puis à Prague, en 1732, au théâtre du Comte FRANTISEK ANTONIN SPORK {1662~1738}, et de nouveaux à Venise au TEATRO SANT’ANGELO, en 1734, dans une version incluant deux airs de JOHANN ADOLPH HASSE {1699~1783}, deux de GEMINIANO GIACOMELLI {1692~1740}, et un de LEONARDO LEO {1694~1744}, et trois autres de compositeurs non identifiés. C’est cette dernière partition, qui s’apparente à un pasticcio, qui est conservée à Turin. I love everything about this! I saw the Wexford one too of this exact production and I might love this cast even a little bit more but I'm happy my two favorites (Véronique Valdès and Rosa Bove) are the same in both. How happy am I as well that there are so many mezzos :D I love a good Baroque trouser role and these performers are all so amazing, Filindo is adorable and I absolutely love genderfluid Apollo. The set is so pretty and the staging is so great; I love how it emphasizes that each of the principles have their own character arc. The choreography for "Bel piacer saria d’un core" in particular really broke my heart! (which is probably fitting). the aesthetic of the entire production is just lovely and I love how it depicts the four seasons so simply and yet so beautifully. This is now one of my favorite opera productions! Thank you so much for sharing, it really brought some light into the darkness that is 2020/2021.

I absolutely loved this. listened to audio a few times, but never had watched a production. so apparently the masks were to imply them as a group of Chinese servants, who've historically covered nose and mouth for a long time, and the snake attacking the kingdom would then also be likened to a dragon dance. of course this is out of place to the setting of ancient Greece, but intended in some productions.

hah, when I saw the first scene it reminded me of the movie Midsommer. And indeed the opera could have fitted a horror-esque treatment. Instead the direction went for a more conventional course. Pleasant to see and by no means bad, but I was left with the feeling one could have done much more and more interesting. The hodgepodge of visual references (Greek-ish, Chinese, opera buffa with Admeto...) did not work as it could have been. The lights also could have been more subtle. Muslcally it was very good, with Fasolis imprinting a good spirit to the score (even though those little preludes from the Seasons were a bit too on-the-nose) and a generally good and solid cast of singers, some more some less.

Due anni fa l’Orlando, la stagione scorsa la Dorilla in Tempe....quest’anno già ero pronta a godere un’altra meraviglia barocca, il Farnace., ma il Coronavirus è nemico anche dell’arte. Coraggio, però:, andrà tutto bene e apprezzeremo più di prima ciò di cui abbiamo tanto sentito la mancanza!

There are male sopranists (countertenor) as david hansen, jaroussky, max-emanuel cencic and many others who are, in my point of view, more adequate for this roles.

I think you will find, if you research it, historically roles were always sung by castratti or women. There is no evidence that countor tenors as we know them today, male sopranists or falsettoists were ever used in baroque opera.

Since we don't have castrati anymore, why don't we simply sing their parts down an octave? In terms of authenticity, it is more so not only in terms of intent; but such adaption in baroque music was no big deal. Parts were rewritten for alternate voices on many occasions. Expand your audience to your contemporaries who prefer seeing real men making love to women.
