This is imho the best version of the Nisi Dominus ever. Andreas has such a perfect voice. I had the great good fortune to see him once and it was breathtaking. He sang Arvo Pärt's Vater Unser as an encore. I thought my heart would burst with joy
6:19 to 11:04. Ohhhhhh my favorite piece I've ever found!!!! I have tried to have people listen but they just don't understand or appreciate this masterpiece. This music makes my soul feel alive and profound.
Charlie, you're not alone, we are all here in delight with this music. Even my German Shepherd sings along (sings, not barks)....This music heals the soul...
12:30 One reason why Andreas Scholl is my favourite. He stands and delivers, like a coiled spring ready to explode! After the climax and rest, he just about tears the next page off. Of course though, he is extremely controlled in everything
For a previous video of this singer someone posted "Clark Kent can sing?" But of course; he is Superman. Of course Superman could sing like this. Out of this world (get it?).
Thank God that I finally discovered this extraordinary countertenor, Andreas Scholl, thanks to my interest in countertenors and.. I must admit, also thanks to RU-vid. I spend every evening hours searching for talents . I have found one in a Knabenchor in Baden- Wuertenberg and I am closely following his talent. He is still very young but will start training to be a countertenor. So I am also fascinated by Andreas and not only his verybeutiful singing but also how he explains and talks about what countertenor singing. He is so honest in his way of analyzing it. Thank you Andreas, you are fantastic . (IncidentallyI had a chance when I was a boy to hear Alfred Delmer in when I was living in New York. My parents were very enthusiastic about barrock music and it was always present in our home)
I look forward to checking him out. You may know of Klaus Nomi and Luke Aberghast , they sparked my appreciation for this amazing, uplifting voice of the counter tenor
1. Nisi Dominus aedificaverit domum,1 in vanum laboraverunt, qui aedificant eam. Nisi Dominus custodierit civitatem frustra vigilat qui custodiat eam. 2. Vanum est vobis ante lucem surgere. 3. Surgite postquam sederitis, qui manducatis panem doloris. 4. Cum dederit dilectis suis somnum, Ecce haereditas Domini, filii: Merces, fructus ventris, Fructus ventris. Cum dederit dilectis suis somnum, Ecce haereditas Domini, filii: Merces, fructus ventris, Fructus ventris (3 v.). 5. Sicut sagittae in manu potentis, ita filii excussorum. 6. 7. Gloria Patri et Filio et Spiritui Sancto, Sicut erat in principio et nunc et semper et in saecula saeculorum. Amen.
A fine performance from late 1999 or early 2000 I seem to remember. The Decca CD released in the UK in August 2000 is really excellent and thoroughly recommended. This CD and indeed performance shown here is close to excellence alongside Scholl's 'Heroes' CD which has Handel's captivating 'Ombra Mai Fu' and 'Where'er You Walk' of course.
Psalm 127 [126 Vulgate] Canticum graduum Salomonis 1 Nisi Dominus aedificaverit domum, in vanum laboraverunt qui aedificant eam.
Brilliant. I'm surprised he took the Gloria at such a slow pace - it is "Glory be, " seems like it should be happier- but it's still gorgeous! Thanks for posting- it's so nice to see the piece being performed live rather than just with sound.
Inés de Erausquin, it’s not the Gloria in excelsis, but the Gloria patri et filio et spritui sancto, the prayer which meant to be solemn thus the slow tempo
@@magnacarta740 Having grown up saying that prayer (and hearing the Gloria in excelsis every Sunday at Mass,) I know very well what it means, and the difference; but I don't see any reason it shouldn't be just as joyous as a "Gloria in excelsis." But that's just my opinion... and as I said, it's still absolutely beautiful. If I had his impeccable breath control I might be happy to do it slower too!
As an amateur singer who has learned and loves this piece, one of things I most appreciate about this version is that because it is live you actually get to see him breathe! Some of the studio recordings erase all of the necessary breaths, which sounds great musically, but is impossible to imitate. That Cum Dederit is a killer because it is humanly impossible to sing without putting a breath where you would really rather not.
indeed, very interesting how he did the breathing on fructus ventris....you would say a big nono, but Andreas manages to pull it off in a very musical way that its not bothering at all.....indeed better breathe a bit more often but keep the line or flow going if you must....
I am not a religious man myself, however, it is undeniable what Christianity contributed to art whatsoever more than any other religion. Thanjs for posting! Greetings from Brazil!
+Frederico Leal "More than any other religion"? You clearly haven't researched much history if you make that blanket statement. Numerous religions have contributed to art, math, music, literature and many more through thousands of years. Not even experts would be able to say one religion made more than another. Don't make such a broad, generalized statement because it makes you look ignorant.
No religion has contributed to western civilisation quite so much as christianity .lookk at the great artists like Michealangelo Carravagio then look at the musicians Bach Mozart Vivaldi who incidently composed these pieces who in fact was a priest. the Great Art Historian Lord Clarke made a ground breaking series called Civilisation clearly stated this. I am a religious person and I do believe these artists were divinely inspired people should stop apologising
Once someone asked me what the difference was between Europe and America. I replied: "The same that exists between Monte Carlo and Las Vegas, between classical music and jazz/rock music. The United States has never had aristocratic courts; Europe is an aristocratic culture.
This is brilliantly put. Yes, an Aristocratic culture, truly differentiated and hierarchical. Alas, that historical culture is finally being completely subsumed into the modernist, techno- Bolshevist state of Becoming. Be well, look to Tradition

This is the theme in the korean drama "White Christmas." Psychological thriller taking place at an ultra-elite high school. (so proud that I knew it was a countertenor!)
borednow yes, I think some notes she played sounded an octave higher because maybe she wasn’t pressing firm enough on the string and the first harmonic (of each note) sounded. it wasn’t that bad to be honest, and it’s also very easy for that to happen if you’re not careful or depending on the quality of the strings
I caught something too. But I for one can forgive the small slip. Along with Scholl, she gave a master performance on violin and an instrument I had never heard of before, the viola d’amore.
