Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest dance forms of India, and nowadays is also one of the most popular and widely performed dance styles in that country. In Atlanta, we went to the Deeksha School of Performing Arts where dancer and choreographer Anupa Thakurta is teaching and spreading the knowledge of Bharatanatyam to a wider community.
Anupa learned this Indian classical dance under the tutelage of Padmashri Guru Saroja Vaidyanathan. When she moved to Atlanta, she set up a dance studio as a platform for students to appreciate the dance form, that with a wide range of movements and postures, lends itself to experimental and fusion choreography.
At the Deeksha School of Performing Arts she teaches Bharatanatyam juxtaposed with other dance forms, and occasionally, they produce performances open to the public where they showcase the beauty and captivating movements of this dance style. They presented their last show "Aakriti" at the Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta.
