Toronto, Canada's Anvil were one of the first North American bands to push the sound and style of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal one step further. Clearly indebted to the likes of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and many others from across the Atlantic, Anvil nonetheless played louder, faster, and heavier than their heroes, in the process laying the groundwork for the thrash movement that took over heavy metal's underground in the '80s. Yet unlike many of the furious West Coast thrashers that immediately followed them, Anvil were mostly out for a good time: their albums often featured borderline pornographic sex songs, and frontman Steve "Lips" Kudlow frequently took to the stage in a bondage harness and played guitar solos with a vibrator.

you had to be a metal head in high school in the 80's when this came out to understand how badass this song was. Every metal head had this blasting from their car stereo at that time~!

Say what you will, but the first three Anvil albums are metal classics. Sure they didn't become huge, but that doesn't change the fact that the first 3 albums are very influential to metal. Very important albums that deserve respect.

I also like Strength of Steel but I don't know what happened with their fifth one (Pound for Pound). Severe, precipitous drop in quality and right on the heels of the best releases by the big four no less...

I saw Anvil playing in Dublin 1983. Black Sabbath, Motorhead and Twisted Sister also played. Amazing memories!

Haven't heard of this band till 1997 and loved it. No posers needed. This band is original. All about Metal music. No wonder Slash and other artist are influenced by this band. Anvil Rocks

I don't understand how these guys didn't blow up alongside other bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, etc. They are a great band and were pretty much seminal when it comes to heavy metal. Steve and Robb seem like good people too. I could definitely see myself being buddies and partying with them if I had grown up around them. You can tell Steve is in it for the fun of making and performing metal music and not the fame and money. He looks totally pumped and happy as heck when he's performing live. I'm glad they made that documentary about them and gave them some exposure. They deserve it!

Anvil couldn't touch Maiden and Priest in talent and musicianship, however, history has shown a band or solo artist does not have to be good to become wildly popular. I said " I don't know why they didn't blow up", not "I don't know why they never got as much praise" as Maiden and Priest. It doesn't matter that they weren't as good. They were in the right place at the right time and playing the right kind of music to have become huge,but they didn't.

@@salamanderns-fkv5712 Besides, good music, as far as non-musician fans are concerned, is very subjective. I think some of Anvil's songs are as good as anything in their particular style of metal/rock. In the era it was released, the song Metal On Metal was actually pretty innovative. It had an original sounding main riff that IMO was daring at the time. I'm speaking not as a fan, but a guitarist of over 40 years. Hearing it today, of course, it doesn't sound that original because there has been so much innovation since, but at the time...

Same for Rush. They got no deal/support here in Canada and it's a shame that it happened. It's like Canadians have zero faith in their rock musicians/ashamed of them and would only support them if they got famous in America. I don't think that's the problem today.

this album changed my life when it came out, and i was only 6 years old at the time. unless it came out before my 6th birthday. but my uncle had this album. of course i taped it. then played the snot out of it until i got my own copy of it.

Clive Burr's last studio recording with Iron Maiden was The Number of the Beast. The album would go on to sell 14 million copies. It peaked at #1 on the UK Charts. Although success in the US was more gradual. At the time of Clive's departure they were already one of the biggest bands in heavy metal. They were a significant step up from Anvil.

the problem about this is most people into Anvil are those who think it's cool to dislike the mainstream; thus the people who just download everythign so their iPod looks cool. Do bands like these justice if you really like them and BUY THEIR STUFF

Anvil are a bit like a real life version of Tap.. check out the documentary on them, it's The Story of Anvil.. or some of their early albums (Metal on Metal is a solid one, Forged in Fire rocks as well)

This was in heavy rotation in the 80's on head bangers ball and on all the metal radio stations. You just do not get cause it was not your time. This song was a arena anthem that were played before concerts that people sang along to, it just had that it factor at the time and summed up the entire metal scene.
