There is no “comfortable” way to recover from panic disorder.
Don’t waste your time or money on books, CDs, DVDs or websites that claim to have a “cure” for panic attacks unless you’re willing to face your fear head on as part of the process. Nobody can get you around that. Nobody. Sorry, but that’s just the way it is. The very heart of recovery lies in learning not to be afraid of panic The only way to do that is to fully experience panic without fleeing, avoiding, or adding more fear to the situation. This means that you will experience times of extreme fear and discomfort. That’s just the way it has to be. The good news is that if you’re willing to do that a few times, it will begin to get easier very quickly. It doesn’t take long for your courage to pay off as you suddenly find that you are no longer deathly afraid of having a panic attack. Reach that point and you’re most of the way home!
You have to be afraid, before you can not be afraid.

I get scared all the time of the symptoms, getting dizzy , sniffing my nose , burping , especially in public, because they come when my anxiety comes

Do you have a theory on why some people have panic attacks periodically (even going to the ER), but after they are done with some bouts of panic, they are ok and don't really think about it for a month or two until the next one, and other people have a few panic attacks, then GAD, Agoraphobia, etc sets in and they are in a constant anxiety loop ?

Thats the million dollar question my friend. I wish I had an answer. But you are absolutely correct. Many many people experience panic attacks without ever developing an anxiety disorder while others can spiral quickly into panic disorder or even agoraphobia after just one or two episodes. If we could figure out why that happens we'd be WAY ahead of the game. Excellent question!

May be it's additional social anxiety , the fear of losing social self image when panic is being exposed in public, which leads to disorder. 🤔

I’m tired of convincing myself that it’s still something worse than an anxiety symptom after watching these videos. The numbness in my chest making me think it’s a heart issue is just anxiety? Along with the other numbness sensations I’m Feeling throughout my body ? It’s so obvious it’s anxiety, like I’ve survived a million of these attacks and I’m still convincing myself that I’m dying haha and I know it’s something I got to keep working on and I always like to take the extra mile to push myself.

You mentioned at around minute 15 that you experienced anxiety (panic?) the day before. You said you wanted to make sure, "...that event didn't represent a slide backwards for me." What event ? I am also curious to know what you felt and why it made you feel like you couldn't leave your house. I find it interesting this popped up for you after 15-years. Did you reflect on what may have triggered it ? Did it cross your mind that maybe all the panic/anxiety was coming back or did you brush it off as nothing?

Good question! Yes, I did experience a full blown panic attack a couple of days before this video. I wanted to make sure that it didn't put me into a backward slide, so that's what I was referring to. What I felt the next day was the same fear of the next attack that anyone with panic disorder feels. You're a bit shaky and tired and you're worried that it might happen again. It can happen to people like us, even after all this time. The difference for me now is that I don't care what triggered it and I don't care that it happened. I have an idea what triggered it, but that doesn't matter. The only thing that matters to me is how I handled it, that I recognize it as just a single event that day that doesn't have any impact on today, and that I challenged the fear and didn't let it take hold going forward. It was a panic attack. Nothing more, nothing less. By the time we recorded this episode it was a meaningless past event for me.

Ok so , say a person keeps attempting to get out there and be severely uncomfortable- like to the point of extreme physical condition, out of breath, shaking etc- then in that condition how the heck is that person supposed to head over to the next activity? Like if one goes to the mall and feels breathless and half dead after the experience, how do they proceed to a restaurant after that, for example?? In other words, how doez one really do what is suggested in this video as far as pushing ahead from one uncomfortable situation to the next? Without collapsing?

Hi Laura. Forgive me for answering a question with a question, but what a behavioral therapist would ask you would be, "Have you actually collapsed or do you just feel like you're going to collapse"? Collapse is an extreme state where you are truly physically unable to stand upright because there is simply no strength and/or muscle tone available to support that posture. Assuming you have not actually physically collapsed, then what do you think you are doing to save yourself from that fate? Is what you're doing actually saving you from anything other than being afraid that you may collapse? I'm not discounting fatigue because that is obviously real, but its important to be as objective as we can in assessing our state at all times. Im sure you do feel shaky and short of breath, but that happens when you are afraid and in the middle of that fight or flight response. Its not necessarily indicative of pending collapse and its very possible and even likely that just going on to the next situation would find you no worse off for the wear. Does that make sense? This is a good topic for an episode at some point. I'm sure I'll address it.
