Love the quotation marks in your voice when saying the A1 is "Heavily" inspired by another pen. A lot of their "inspired" pens are a great introduction to various styles. The user just has to remember that it's not an accurate representation of the nib experience. That said, loved my A1 until I broke the nib door through my own actions. I chuckle when people complain about the Chinese copies and rememeber the big 3 in Japan in the 1960s. In 1963 or so Sailor created the Japanese Pocket Pen, 6 months or so later, Platinum came out with one that looked very similar, 1968 Pilot came out with the Elite which looked similar too. As a note, I can swap barrels and caps between my Pilot and Platinum, my Sailor is larger diameter, so they don't quite fit, the Sailor cap might fit the newer E95s. Then there is Hero out of China with their "licensed" copy of the Parker 51. They were actually "given" the designs, etc., and contracted to make copies for Parker to try and get into the Chinese market.

The single start is so that the nib should align to the nib when posted as you say. I have had to pull the nib and feed on a few pens to correct the alignment. As a right hander I skew the clip slightly to the left. Interestingly I have found that resetting the nib has improved the writing performance of 80% of the pens I have done this with. Could be that at the factory someone just jams them in while I push them in so that they are just tight enough not to leak etc.

New to the fountain pen world but coming from the watch world, it's amusing how both hobbies have a Chinese homage subsection.

I just flashed on when (15 years ago) I bought a watch from a vendor outside of Tesco in Tianjin, China, which broke when I was setting the time. I went back the next week and they were gone. But I bet they are just fine now in 2024.

Your delightful site has encouraged me to explore Chinese pens and this Majohn is really outstanding value . The weight & look of the pen are terrific. Aesthetics terrific. Nine are quite good. For me this is a winner.

Nice honest review. I don’t give a toss about the ‘inspired by’ thing. Who was first in line with a cigar shaped FP? Hint: not Mont Blanc. I don’t post so that’s not an issue. Would be disappointed with architect nib, I probably do not have your skills or patience to get it performing correctly. And as someone who has a notepad next to the keyboard, 3.5 turns is beyond the pale. Impressive handwriting samples.

Doodlebud, the Majohn vacuum pen that you showed may actually be a clone of the Lotus Hide and Seek pen from India. Although Lotus is not a demonstrator pen but ebonite. That Majohn is gorgeous!!! And, even though they are extremely close to other pens, they are great affordable options for the other expensive versions. I personally love the Majohn x1.

To me, Form follows Function. The pen has to work every time, endure, open quickly and close easily or you simply will never actually use it. I have pens like MontBlanc that are archived because they do not pass the test. My Concord does: *snaps* open not screws! Loads fast, great nib, snaps shut, done. Writes beautifully with a medium nib, and Quinck.

Thank you for the video. It was very attractive and educational the way you made this presentation. Well, for some reason, people also agree to wear cheap jewels, which are well made items inspired by the genuine ones. I also use to write with cheap fountain pens, not necessarily copies, but made of cheap materials and having an acceptable look. If one puts hand writing over collecting, then the quality of the writing of those Chinese fountain pens and their functionality could be enjoyable to the user. I would agree that this Majohn fountain pen is, as you said, a piston filler, not a vacuum filler. Finally, I am afraid that, if I would buy a Majohn P138 fountain pen and it would write well, as expected, then I would not step forward to its Montblanc source of inspiration! Thank you once again for your nice video!

Hi DB! Fancy pen! I feel your pain! I recently received a Jinhao pen with a Medium nib, and the thing was just closed up! Got it writing, but I need to try and work it a little more, I think. Is MUCH juicier than it was when I received it. Thanks again!

Stub nib from Majohn! So the miracles do happen! This design is definitely not for me though, not in Majohn and not in MB version. Just no. But I do hope they will continue to expand their nib options.

As with many of these pens, I like the idea of "try and buy". I just got a Wing Sung 699 to see if the Pilot 823 would be a good fit. Sometimes the pen that pays homage is so good I don't need to find the original. For this one I think I will pass. It just doesn't do anything for me. For others it may be just fine.

I have a couple of WS 699s, and I like them just fine. The no step body and vacuum mechanism is a great combo. I would pick up the real thing, if they offered it with decent nib options in US, but nope they do not, just fine and medium, with any nice interesting nib options only available in Japan. [Edit] Fixed typos from the cell phone keyboard.

As oversea orders are not covered under refund policy, seller just sent you some shit and close the deal. I find China domestic copies got superior quality to the things on Aliexpress or Etsy, who is literally just bunches of distributors. I got two of those, both nibs align with cap posted.

The pen writes okay and looks impressive on the desk, but someone looked at the internals and found lots of glued parts. The nib is glued, apparently, and some of the components of the piston. Also, I agree about the name on the cap.
