I'm waiting for tmr vilgerfortz beat geralt once then lost to him with yen and Regis but seeing as he also was the one who called for the conclave but they gave that to yennefer I'm ready for anything at this point I just love witcher that's probably the only reason I'm still watching watching over episode 5 as I type this and I just love that episode season 1 episode gave more witcher vibes but episode 5 in season 3 gave u the mystique and every thing I love about witcher the aura the secret enemy yen and geralt

She was cast at the last minute. The plan was for Ciri to also be a diversity cast, but there was an outrage and a petition was raised (which I remember signing) for them cast a white girl as she is in the books.
@@zacinc6687 Got any source regarding Ciri was originally a diversity casting? I knew about Freya Allan originally had a much smaller role in the show but didn't know about who was planned to play Ciri before Allan got the role.

The fan was right but for the wrong reasons, it's not because she doesn't look like the character it's because she doesn't play the character from the books or games at all. She plays a self inserted character of the producer.

@@JohnBoyJoy I have the original, Polish version, but in English translation it is: "A pale triangular face, violet eyes and narrow, slightly contorted lips appeared beneath the black tresses" Also "Yennefer, on the other hand, although attractive in her own way, could not be considered a beauty." And last "Raven-black curls, wavy as a storm, cascade down to her shoulders, shining, reflecting the light like peacock feathers, swirling and rippling with every movement. Lips, wonderfully narrow and pale under lipstick." Pale skin, almost exactly opposite, triangular face - not really either, Curly thick hair - wavy at best, narrow, pale and contorted lips - not even close. I mean sure, she does not have to be exact copy of the novel, that is an authors fantasy. Also her eyes have been described as cold and evil numerous times. Would you be able to say Anya's CGI eyes were cold and evil at any point?
Kate Beckinsale and Eva Green? Maybe if the Witcher show were made 10 years ago. Kate is 50 now. Eva Green could possibly pull it off, 43 isn't that old, but Yennefer is canonically supposed to look like she is in her 20s despite being in her 80s, 90s due to magic
Yea idk. Technicly yea, but Yennifer is a character with a specific description people grew to know her by. That includes personality. The show changed booth the characterisation and the looks.
@@Rak9-j8h Because (a) I've read the books and (b) I played the games. And based on that I say - she is not Yennefer, neither by looks nor by spirit. And it has nothing to do with melanin...

@@hiderutrow6239 she is nice and beautiful girl. But yes, the author of this book wrote about absolutely different character. It’s is not just about skin it’s about how she act. And I think the racism is actually to change the skin colour then the author exactly say that it’s very white . Because it’s part of European culture in the past.
@@paigeanne1325she was described as looking late teens/early 20s in the short stories by Dandelion... It's so easy to tell who actually read the books and who didn't
It's not about skin colour, or racism, Anya is beautiful woman, her beauty is warm and cute. While Yennefer meant to looks cold, strict. She just don't have that unpleasant glaze I associate with her mysterious character. Edit: anyway, shes wonderful actress. I'd love to see her in that role, if script was better :(
I was introduced through The Witcher 2 game. Then read the books before 3 came out. And was so impressed with how the game portrayed everyone. The casting for the show really threw me off. I still like it, but feel like it's only a shadow of what could have been.
When there’s someone who’s playing an important role, and the only thing you see of them is race, and not how well they did their role (Cleopatra is an exception), that says a lot about you then it does about them
@@iknowexactlywhoyouare8701because race is important. You wouldn't like a black character to be played as a white person. You're racist just to white people and that doesn't make you cool. and I'm not white btw.
Henry carried the series so I have much respect for him, but it’s not his fault the show died though, they were going for something new that know one wanted, and it’s annoying cause it had so much potential
I actually really liked her as Yennefer. She’s a wonderful actress and let’s be honest, she’s gorgeous enough to be Yennefer. What I didn’t like about the Witcher was how they massively changed every other minor character like Triss (although she’s technically not a minor character but she is in this show). Triss was one of my favorites and they totally ruined her character. Also, don’t get me started on the witches who were supposed to be the most beautiful in the world 😂. They are not.
It's not about looks, it's about charisma, demeanour, her aura in general... Anya is cute and almost shy, even when she puts her "superior face" on... That's the opposite from Yen. I always thought Eva Green would be the perfect casting choice for Yen. Not because she looks like her, but because no matter the movie she's in, she always gives those "levitating above all others" vibe... And thats Yen... So, in a matter of speaking, fan wasn't wrong. Idiotic, but not wrong...
I love Anya Chalotra as Yennefer. She's doing an amazing job, and I think Netflix did a great job casting her and all of the cast honestly. Maybe an unpopular opinion, but as an avid Witcher fan in all of the ways, I like the Witcher show too, it's a fun take on the characters and story.
Well the fan was right but it's not her fault that Netflix decided to stab our (the fans) hearts over and over again in that "series". she made the best out of it like I feel everyone did until Henry Cavill also felt his heart was stabbed one too many times there
I understand being annoyed at casting directors and writers but leave the actors alone. That being said she definitely isn’t yennifer in any way but she wasn’t written to be either
@@Fairenough642 if someone told me “I’ll pay you $50,000 an episode to play wonder women” The only thing I would hear is $50,000 lol I’m not blaming an actor for accepting money. That a hard job to actually get paid for.

Ok all of you are saying the fan was right but no. The person playing yennefer did nothing to deserve that interaction. Blame the writers yall. Be better.
NOPE. You be better. It's a street which goes both ways. She chose to participate in disrespect of the lore and Polish culture. Just exactly how "white" actors are shamed abd held to account for whitewashing POC roles You don't get to morally lecture anyone with that outrage hypocrisy
In what world does she look like Yennefer? People always trying to do the race narrative, it’s not about her race, it’s about the fac that she DOESN’T look like Yennefer at all
@@Alb420 eh more so than the show. Even Geralt from the games doesn't really look exactly how they described him but the difference is with the games they at least attempted to make the characters close to the descriptions
She is absolutely gorgeous but she doesn't have the yennefer mysterious background and aura. Also we all know she got casted because netflix wanted the diversity box to fill, that's why we see fringilla vigo as black and her role is increased as in books she was rarely relevant except in last book that too for a short time.
Other than her not being white she looks at described in the books - long dark hair and violet eyes. Also, she fits the embodiment of the character well. Y'all complaining but if they prioritized just appearance over skill you'd likely have an appearance accurate model with little acting skill and you'd still be upset...
Have they run out of talented white actresses? Stop acting like she was the only woman who could’ve played the part. They didn’t pick her because she was the most talented, they picked her because she didn’t look like Yennefer.
You'd may have a point ... If they didnt purposely look for someone of her skin color to play yen. Dont believe me? Look it up. Before anyone was casted they specifically stated that they wanted a brown skinned or south asian to play yennefer in the show.
I personally love her as Yennefer. But I do have to point out that the books described Yen as having a "slightly receding chin", which neither the series nor the game's actress has. I think it would have been very meaningful to show a small chinned beauty, as they're seen less and less in Hollywood, but whatever.
Its genuinely offensive to take a polish peice of media that is written in a polish setting with polish charecters and to just completly get rid of all that for "inclusion"
She is the perfect Yenn. People are just crazy haters. She reminds me of Yenn from the third game and that’s what I wanted. They made her less mean, which is fair lol
I mean in the books and games I think I remember hearing some thing that like Yennifer doesn’t even look like Yennifer she uses her powerful magic to make her look like Yennifer
The main problem is Yennefer is a dominant character. I don’t care about the race thing but this girl just looks naive. Eva Green would be the perfect cast
When there’s someone who’s playing an important role, and the only thing you see of them is race, and not how well they did their role (Cleopatra is an exception), that says a lot about you then it does about them
"Yennefer had lots of curly, raven black hair fragrant with lilac and gooseberry perfume, falling in a cascade of curls on the shapely shoulders. Her face was very pale, triangular in shape showing slightly receded chin." seems legit to me.
I was weirded out at the cast choice, cause I was used to the games, but then it made them have more character and soul that the games, I loved the cast in show.
Your own casting Director said you were hired ‘to subvert beauty standards’. Did you wonder what was meant by that? Sounds like the call was already coming from inside the house.
The fan IS right, it’s disappointing that the producers and writers of this show purposely out of spite towards the fan base to go against accuracy and stay true to the material, books, and against Andrzej Sapkowski even, by casting actors and actresses who resemble NOTHING as the characters, features, or racially. No wonder Henry Cavil jumped ship off this
100% agree she looks nothing like Yennefer same with Triss very lazy choices that is witcher fans all fell for when the series started they showed their true colours after season 2
Is the fan correct? yes Do we honestly care? no Its all about delivery (as long as she doesn't stray too far from the character *cough little mermaid movie cough* )
Except that she has strayed far from that character (though I admit that's more the writers fault). But still, even leaving out race, the girl is absolutely nothing like Yennefer - especially in contrast to Ciri, who was also aged.
I'm not gonna lie. Anya is a very beautiful lady and i love her performance in the series very much. But the fan wasn't wrong though. The Witcher was written by a polish writer, based on polish folklores. However, Netflix being woke makes it diverse. Say, if a Chinese writer wrote books like witcher based on chinese folklores, and Netflix replace some Chinese characters with white people, that would be racist, isn't it? But some ppl being holier than thou, accuse people of racism when someone complain blackwashing. It's not racist. If someone is racist, that has to be the studio replacing white characters with Africans and Asians. Oh, don't get me wrong though. This coming from an Asian who lives in south east Asia.
Anya is gorgeous but she lacks that sophisticated mannerism Yennefer has, that was my main problem with her casting. It's not about her looks, it's about the way she carries herself.
@@mikj48 but the Netflix series is based by the books, not the games. And, although it is true that Triss in the series does not precisely follow the books description, it is also true that in the games Triss is completely wrong. Books: blue eyes, copper/brown hair tending to reddish. Games: green eyes and fiery red hair. The only thing they got right, more than the series, is the personality: sweet and kind attitudes, but underneath manipulative and selfish like all witches. And, anyway, since the series is inspired by the books, it's actually not that important, because Triss is just a secondary character, not even that important, like for example Dandelion and Regis. The games made her almost a protagonist.
This series is not even Witcher so she can't be Yennefer either. This series is something else so lets call her something else too. As a polish guy i hated all the change Netshit made.
