Constructing a pre-fabricated 10ft x 8ft shed (or as we call it, our store).
(Anyone can do it - even a 77-year-old pensioner like myself!!) I built our super store in only 10 days
1~ Order your shed & ascertain the current dimensioning from the supplier - particularly important for setting out the foundations.
2~ Decide the type of foundation - in our case, because of the sloping ground and a deep ditch, I built localised ‘spot’ footings of bricks, concrete & mortar all aligned with the supplier’s floor battening. Whatever your decision, ensure the base top is level.
3~ Receive the new shed/store kit of parts, read the instructions & identify the specific procedures.
4~ The floor. The supplied wood floor was very distorted so after some remedial saw work, I laid it down & covered the whole with separately purchased 9mm OSB boards to provide an even surface. I screwed the OSB into the provided floor to enhance stability. FLOOR DONE.
5~ The walls. Lay the ‘side 1’ individual walls onto the floor & screw the sides firmly together. Note that in our case the store needed to be erected adjacent to our greenhouse with its own sloping roof! This entailed installing a gutter to the top of the ‘side 1’ wall thereby catching rainwater off the 2 separate roof pitches. Screw the completed ‘side 1’ wall into the floor.
6~ Follow the same procedure for the remaining 3 walls (including any window/door walls), screwing each corner together as required & secure everything into the floor. WALLS DONE.
7~ The roof. Fabricate the roof truss & install as required together with each of the pre-fabricated end apex panels. Fix the provided individual purlins between the truss & apex panels.
Note that roofing a store adjacent an existing greenhouse required different procedures allowing access from within to fix smaller roof panels & felting. This would NOT normally be necessary!!
Secure all OSB roof boarding as directed &, after cutting to size, apply the provided roof felt with its specified overlaps. Secure the felt with clout nails at the required centres. ROOF DONE.
8~ Windows & doors Fix the pre-made window surrounds & install the ‘acrylic’ window panes as required. Carefully align the doors & secure to each door jamb using the supplied hinges & associated ironmongery. Note that we used additional Yale locks & bolts to enhance the security.
WINDOW & DOORS DONE.
9~ Finishing works. Fix all supplied cover strips to vertical panel joints & apex. Stain all surfaces to your required colour - in our case - Panelling in Charcoal black with door frames in Terracotta.
10~ JOB DONE - STAND BACK & ADMIRE YOUR SUPER SHED/ STORE!!
