Anything Scout '77 LS Swap

Here is the first video of our Mechanical Conversion Series builds. This one includes a 1977 International Scout II with a 2005 GM 5.3l engine.
We have a lot of customers who either want to keep the original paint and patina and still have a performance based reliable daily driver or they want to stage the build into mechanical work, be able to drive it for a while and then later bring it back for paint and body work.

Mad respect for keeping these great trucks on the road and like you said in another video, once an owner you always look back on the Scouts fondly.

I'm into my 74 SII for 650! I could get this kit into it and still not be anywhere near new truck prices. Oh, and I'm on collector plates, F.U. emissions man!

That's really awesome when you compare 20k to the average cost of a new Chevy Colorado without a V8. Sick work!

I bought a 1979 Scout II new when I was about 20. Great vehicle, but with the 304 engine, it could only do 0-60 in 13 seconds. What a difference an LS could make!

Your 304 isnt running right. Cam 0-80350 Holley and you can out torque a 5.3 0-4000 rpm.

Great job, i did my swap with your kit everything worked and fit perfect, you guys were very helpful and answer all the questions I had also, it is a lot of work to do it yourself so many hrs working on it and researching parts, if I had to do it again I would just have you guys do it for me 17k is worth it. I spent over 20k but it runs great, question; are the roll bar and seat belts included?
@anythingscout
@anythingscout 5 лет назад
The roll bar is not something that is included in the base swap, but is a very common add for our in-house builds.

I'm very unclear why I was quoted 25k when enquiring about a 5.3 swap for my 1980 II earlier this week...
@anythingscout
@anythingscout 4 года назад
Hey Jeffery, we made the classic mistake of putting pricing in a video. This was from 2017 and how we do our swaps now has evolved. They are more complete and comprehensive builds now than just slapping an engine in and getting it running. We are constantly learning and tweaking our process to make our product better and better.
@55tommyk55
@55tommyk55 3 года назад
Ok, all this sounds good. Power, reliability, and ride all good. Hows the mpg when 5.3 is in a scout ii, on stock dana 44 axles? When compared to weight I've learned my scout ii with a 345 is 3,600#. A 05 chevy extended cab 4x4 is 5,000#. The 5.3 has got to be performing better in the lighter scout...
@anythingscout
@anythingscout 3 года назад
Indeed. There are a lot of factors weight, gears, tires, aero, drivetrain drag, how heavy your foot is... But typically we see in the teens with these trucks.

Great Video!! This would be an amazing first vehicle for my son!! Is there one particular year to look for that works best for this conversion?
@anythingscout
@anythingscout 6 лет назад
Pretty much any Scout II (71-80) works if you don't have to worry about passing emissions in your state. And from there, its grill preference and if you want an auto or manual try to find the correct one so you don't have to swap pedals and shifters.

I understand you are trying to sell a service or kit to people but implying that the stock SV engine is unreliable just doesn't make any sense. I currently own 4 Internationals ranging from 1969 to 1973 all with their original engines. That's close to 200 years of combined reliability just in my driveway.
@anythingscout
@anythingscout 4 года назад
Not saying the SV is unreliable, as many of us at the shop own Scouts with the original drivetrains and enjoy them and we take them on trips around the country. But they certainly require more attention and maintenance than a modern engine. Just built for a different type of ownership and expectation. Not saying one is right or wrong, just different.

Trying walking into oriellys or Auto Zone and buying shit for those Engines. Oh you can't? Oh ok. LS is cheaper, more reliable and can get parts everywhere.

If the VIN on the title matches the VIN on the truck, you can be pretty sure it's a 72.

Antonio, Please do your $5k swap....then let us know when it's done and we'll compare fit and finish, quality of parts, and how it drives. It takes a lot of time and work to run and grow a business. To pay your guys well and do quality work. It doesn't help anyone to make false claims about how much work or parts it takes to do a quality job and stand behind it. Look forward to seeing one of your $5k swaps...maybe you'll prove us wrong

The 5.3 was never technically referred to as an "LS" engine. Rather, it was referred to as LM7, L59 or LM4, depending on the specific configuration. While the 5.3 is based on the the LS architecture, it is not an "LS" engine by definition. As a former Scout II owner, I really appreciate this build. But because I'm also a former LS owner ('99 1LE LS1 Camaro and '09 Z51 LS3 Corvette), I take exception to the use of the "LS" designator here.
