Pat Shange was the first international singer whose show I attended many years ago in Carnivore Restaurant, Nairobi, Kenya.. Before the show started, he interacted with the multitude without anyone realising that he was the one. He came to me and started chatting with me without I having a clue that he was the one. We talked about South African history which I knew well and he really enjoyed. It was getting late and people were starting to get frustrated that Pat Shange had not started his performance. It was at this time that excused himself, changed and then came on stage to perform. I could not believe it that the person I was chatting with minutes before was Pat Shange the star. His performance was amazing for he gave his best! He started with my favourite song 'Sweet Mama' which was so melodious.Too bad that I will never meet him again on earth. Wherever you are Pat Shange, may good fortunes be with you. Rest in peace my brother. You are not dead, you are just away.
The first song i danced at my freshers' ball Makerere University more than 35 years ago. It was mindblowing. It was and still is. What a great musician
Back then I was a kid walking without shoes spending the day hungry. I never knew that in future I will own a Range Rover Velar, a Mercedes GLE and buy houses for cash in £££. Despite my successes today, I would give it up in a heart beat to go back to this era. The economy of my country Zimbabwe was still good. The health sector was good and we had our own currency.

Then came 1987 when our village neighbor had a University of Nairobi graduation celebration. In those good old days of Cassette players, the young graduates came with a JVC boombox to the thrill of everyone who cared to know what the city boys had come with. Late in the night, this song was played! man! the poorly lit thatched mud hut was engulfed by the thick cloud of dust as we danced ourselves silly! This song became the inspiration for many of the village boys to do well in school so that we too would become city boys who owned boom boxes.
A hit song of the 80s. Dominated airwaves across Africa during our childhood days. What a song! Brings back nostalgic memories of our era. Reminds me if my childhood days in the streets of Malawi.

I remember when I his photographs from one of his friends named Manoba Xhubeka who was also a journalism student at TSJ Ilala Sharrif Shamba Tanzania. This guy told me much about Pat and his prominance in South Africa from there I began to follow his music. Definitely, a man was a talented artist and among the best musician ever. RIP Pat.
Pat Shange hits days of my youth hard enough . Back in the day when i was growing up, entertainment all through - sweet memories of my youthful days are made of such music . The Afro Pat Shange dancing style together with the drumist and keyboard makes the dance real fun.

This lovely old school music reminds me of my late Dad Ngarambe Leopold's Japanese made National Panasonic Shortwave radio !! we used to hook the oldies of this kind on Northern section channel of the radio Uganda of that time . we used to tune-in on either 60 or 49 meter band . I'll always miss the time between 1986 and 1989. I dedicate it to my generation ...those still alive and fallen comrades !
Pat Shange ...His songs were hits when I was a kid in primary school and his songs were played at a night club just a few meters from our house back in 1984, and the club light would be flashing in our house

Thinking of the fact that this song was done in the 80's and Im here commenting on it speaks volume. Great loss to the continent, fortunately the legacy lives on.
