Lots of very good information. I currently own an MD-9600 on the base. Audio is excellent. It is a version 3 radio. I will be buying the Anytone and was on the fence between the non BT and pro. I plan on putting the TYT in the car and using the Anytone on the base. Also have an 868 HT and absolutely love that. Best HT I have ever owned. Will see if I spring for the extra 100 bucks for the pro.

Hey Jason, Great video! I realize I'm 3 months late for a comment but I don't see any other comment about it. I rarely use the feature but one that you did not mention about the AnyTone D578. It has two PTT buttons on the microphone. The button for the Sub band is on the front of the microphone. It is convenient so you don't have to switch bands to on the display in order to transmit.

The screen size on the AnyTone is smaller, but much more readable. A big screen doesn't help if the resolution or contrast are poor like on the TYT. If the text has to scroll, it's not a good implementation.
@Integr8d
@Integr8d 3 года назад
He’s describing it as black text on a blue background. The blue part is just the backlight (which could be any color; think Baofeng). That’s a standard LCD, similar to your Casio watch. I actually seek out those types of displays (instead of the color matrix LCDs) b/c of their readability in sunlight. The contrast is MUCH higher w/ standard LCDs... The situation w/ the TYT display may be the pixel size or simply that they just wanted a larger font for car readability. The AnyTone has much finer text. But at 3ft away, you might struggle to read that. So they’re anticipating different use cases. The AnyTone display looks like something you’d find on an HT (that you hold 12” from your face). The TYT looks like what you’d roughly want in a car. But I agree that it should be user-selectable, depending on your ability to resolve finer text... Personally, I’d go w/ the bigger buttons and display for car use.

I jumped through some of the video so forgive me if I missed it, but the feature in the Anytone which I would want most is the cross band/cross mode repeat. Bluetooth would be sweet for the detachable head (it will be interesting to see how they implement power supply) and I would put the APRS and 220 in the nice-to-have category. Just my preferences, nothing more. Thanks for the video!

First up, thanks for the great series of video's Jason... I really didn't think that the 9600 rated whatsoever, i got rid of mine after it drove me insane with its constant click in the speaker when you received a signal in digital, the volume control and a few other problems i found that i didnt like. Where on the other hand, I am absolutely wrapped in the technology behind the Anytone AT-D578UV pro. Its completely programmable, i've had the anytone now for about a week and cant put it down, you can virtually change any parameter in the radio to suit your environment and possibly more that i haven't discovered as yet... i used to swear by Icom but now !!

The speaker-pop issue on the MD-9600 was only on the first run of radios. They fixed that and several issues with the 2nd batch, and those haven't been an issue since - maybe 2 years ago. I do agree that the Anytone is the better radio between these 2. However, I still use my MD-9600 and I like it - it works just fine for what it is.
@sperodavias
@sperodavias 4 года назад
Yes your right it was a couple of years ago, its great that they fixed the problem with the 9600, I might grab one and try it again, with its bigger screen it may be a good option for the car whilst I keep the 578 for the bench until they bring out the larger screen option you mention....

Having a speaker in the microphone can be a real blessing in a high noise mobile environment. I have a Wouxon kg-920p in my van that has a speaker in the mic and it really helps. I have an overhead console that I hook the mic to and the radio sits on the dash. I wouldn't be able to hear the radio with just the built in speaker, but I can hear the speaker mic. Being able to adjust the volume on the speaker mic is a nice feature to look for. One complaint I have about the setup is that the speaker in the mic is not disabled on transmit and being a true dual band dual receive radio, it can still receive while transmitting if the other VFO is on the other band which is obviously a problem. I usually keep it set on one frequency only, so it doesn't affect me. Just a few things to look for when doing your reviews.
@HamRadio2
@HamRadio2 4 года назад
The built-in speaker is usually not something to rely on. Connecting an external speaker should solve most of the issues you are describing. If you enjoy the speak-mic on the mobile radio, that is fine. But I use external speakers, so there is no need for me, even if I am driving with the windows down and it is noisy.

I have the TYT and one thing I find frustrating is changing zones when there is anything being received. Even the slightest analog static from a distant repeater will stall my ability to change zones as the radio defaults out of the menu. I have to change channels to a silent frequency to make the zone change. I don’t think the Anytone has that issue.

Great comparison between the TYT and Any Tone. Any Tone appears to have all the bells and whistles plus the Bluetooth remote head will definitely give it an edge. Hope the 5-watt power in the 220 meters is scaled up to 10-watt through its firmware soon. Greetings from New Delhi! 73

I waited since 2016 to buy a DMR mobile since I heard of the rummored AT-D5888UV. Later found out it was actually going to be called AT-D578UV. I then found out about the bluetooth and bluetooth remote mic and decided that would be just fine as an alternative to having the remote mount removable head everyone wants. I currently use my AT-D578UV as a base station so at this point a removable head isn't needed and doing firmware upgrades and updating digital contacts is convenient as I don't have a laptop. There are so many more benefits to the AT-D578UV then any other DMR mobile on the market so I look foward to seeing what competitors come up with next.

I finally gave up on the 9600, had issues like closing the truck door and the frequency would change. Had some issues with the receive. The latest firmware has issues that never got corrected, so you need to stay with the older firmware. As mentioned it's limited to 100,000 contacts. Currently I have been trying to get support from TYT sending 3 emails with no response. There is basically no place to take the radio for repair in the US. I have purchased the 578 and will never look back. As far as the screen size go on the 578, I simply display only the information I need which in turn let's the font get larger. 73

They've done it before with firmware, on other models. Originally this radio was said to be 25 watts on 220, then they changed it to 10. Even now I think it technically should be 10, but all of the vendors have it listed at 5 because that is the current limit.

Nice comparison, I just got md-9600 through radioddity. The software is pretty dated it's incompatible with windows 10 - unless you run it in compatibility mode- windows reports its windows 8 compatible. How's the d578 with the analog channels, I find the md9600 pretty wonkie on analog a lot of squelch weirdness, you have to run it in monitor mode silent to break squelch on anolog channels. . The scan list is sort of weird too. One nice thing is there are some extra settings if you hit ctrl t in the software with the radio connected

On the anytone, the two speaker ports on the back are different. I believe the top port if you plug a speaker in it. Audio will come out of the radio speaker and the external speaker.if you plug the speaker into the bottom Port you only get audio from the external speaker and its silences the internal speaker.

The TYT MD-9600 (or the Retevis RT-90 equivalent) has two receivers in it, whereas the Anytone only has one receiver. If you are wanting to monitor two different channels, you can do so simultaneously with the TYT, or the Retevis RT-90 equivalent. I use this function to monitor law enforcement/Fire-EMS (Analog) on one channel simultaneous with either other Law Enforcement/Fire-EMS, or ham frequencies simplex, repaters, etc...so I can hear both at the same time. That's a huge feature for me, otherwise, I would choose the Anytone, as the TYT and Retevis are less feature rich in other areas.

I'd argue that 50w/40w should be enough for anyone, mobile. One of the primary principles of ham radio is to only use the amount of power you need to establish communications. The goal isn't to achieve the strongest clearest signal at all times, in all communications with all recipients. Power isn't going to compensate for someone, or a repeater, that is shadowed by geography, or buried in trees or behind buildings. Power won't compensate for a poor antenna setup. Lots of good options to improve performance without needing more power.

Yes, eventually. But if an HT can hold 200k then a mobile radio should be able to do so. Have a conversation using the two radio's, Don't tell the person you talk to which radio you are using . Mixed audio reports here regarding the anytone..

Jason- it seems you NEVER show the most important aspects of a transceiver. That being, does it receive well and is it susceptible to intermod or engine noise. You reviews are always about nearly useless features but the only performance you show is power out. *What good is a radio that does everything if I put it in my car and hear noise on everyone's signal?*

Both failed to offer remote head...That's it...THE MOST COMMON FEATURE ON THE OLDER ANALOG AND SOME DIGITAL RADIOS ,now with those DMR mobile radios is THE issue to talk about !!! Personally I don't care about how many THOUSAND CONTACS they can have in... I disagree with the registration system in DMR in general...DStar system was much better for example..So we have two mobiles to compare...In my opinion TYT has better receiver than the Anytone out of the box...Had checked it many many times...Anytone has 3 bands to offer (in US...NOT for the rest of the world...) Only two for the TYT...May be for the colleagues in USA this is important but for us in Europe......Anyway. You get what you are paying for...Just see the price difference ... TYT costs ,almost HALF the Anytone's price !!!The displays....So what...TYT has bigger display on...Anytone has a coloured one...THE POINT is,HOW THEY MANAGE THE DATA TO SHOW ON THEM !!!The programmers could find a way to give you the flexibility to choose alternative lettering (bigger or smaller letters) so you could adapt the displays according to your needs...There are ways to do it...The Anytone's colored display...You can see the name and callsign in it but is useless...The letters are so little ,you have to stop the car to see who is calling !!! There is so much information on a very little screen so it becomes useless...For example...I would prefere, to have ONLY the caller's name and callsign instead of of the channel,the frequency (maybe..) and those useless informations on the upper side of the screen...Anyway I KNOW WHERE I'M TALKING AND LISTENING TO !..I've programmed it !!ONLY the Repeater's callsign or the location ,or the network would be sufficient..And this ONLY at idling channel...I could write many more but I think these are the most important issues with these two radios...73 de SV2LLJ Ioannis

You have to register to use DSTAR, FYI. I did. Most people care alot about what contacts it holds. That is a very common question I get. I do also agree with the remote head comments you made, but at the same time, the Anytone will soon have a BT head. Also the price difference is very little in the USA, if you compare like-kind models, such as both radios that don't have APRS or BT. They have an Anytone version that has neither and it is priced like the MD-9600, so I don't think looking at price-point is valid for this comparison.

@@HamRadio2 Good morning Jason !! Well, of course!! As a newer model, Anytone, offers much more than TYT.. It's some years among them... They HAD to bring up a better radio... So you see, WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THIS ISSUE EXACTLY!!! I do know my friend, for the registrations and their systems... It just happened to be around digital radios from the very beginning of them... Personally, I have been in many commities and clubs about them from Dstar era here in Greece and much more before this... Anyway... I was aware of the control, it was to come with Anytone and still waiting for it..For the price... I Do believe that Both are overpriced.. It depends on the customs to decide for the final price in All countries though!!! 😂 😂 I believe that Anytone will come back with a better model, in the near feature... Also TYT.... Just remember the differences on Icom models 2820 and 5100 for example... But ICOM there in US, has Ray Novak AND THEY LISTEN TO HIM!!! It was their good fortune to have him and for us to have better and better radios..At least for Dstar... Even today the newer models reflect his spirit... I strongly believe that, also TYT and Anytone, have people like Ray there but as I see it, they try to "cut corners" in terms of the production costs.. We are here to see, how they are programming our mobiles and h/ts of the future...Last but not least, keep an eye on the others!!! (Motorola, Hytera, also CS etc..) I think they will be in our near feature also!! 73 de SV2LLJ P. S I do own both of them... Mobiles And h/ts... And some Motorola and Hytera... Not to mention the older digital ones... It's another... topic!!! Have a good day Jason..

Anytone AT-D578 mega shit. NO PTT! You dont can use any other Microphone and no support from Anytone! You can only use the OriginalMic. Bluetooth will disconnected at any time. Works not stable! The feeling of pots are bad.I have still 7x MD-9600, RT90 Version 3. The units works much better. No VFO, no Bluetooth, but the units work fine! And with somer other microphones. The customer need to know, that he can only User the original Microphone. Pull the Mic down and broken, you cannot use the Anytone anymore. Anytone has thousend nice functions, but nothing works good. My choice is the TYT. Cheeper and works.
