ASIC is investigating whether ANZ broke the law when it sold 10-year government bonds in 2023 - forcing down the price of bond futures contracts and increasing the government's cost of borrowing.
The allegations have been labelled as 'disturbing' by a spokesman for the Treasurer.
Following that sale, ANZ was left out of multiple multi-billion dollar debt sales by the government.
Brian Johnson, one of Australia's most respected banking analysts says the allegations of bond manipulation by the bank add up to a crisis for CEO Shayne Elliott and will have profound implications for the bank.
