(Shot from the audience). Anzay day in Ypres Belgium. Anzac Day marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. The acronym ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, whose soldiers were known as Anzacs. Anzac Day remains one of the most important national occasions of both Australia and New Zealand. (LPA)
A Catafalque party is a guard, usually of four people, that stands watch over the coffin and catafalque of a distinguished person or over a significant monument.

I was privileged when attending a Family Reunion in Bendigo to take part in such a Ceremony. Thanks family and their descendants. Pity is that we oldies are becoming fewer, and as I am approaching my 86th birthday, I wonder if I will maybe take part in another Remembrance Day?

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields

As a former Assault Pioneer of 4 Battalion RNSWR 83-86 Sutherland Depot I have never been prouder. The ANZACS were Army Reserve they were not Regular Army, most people don't know that. Thank you for sharing, I live overseas now for 20 years and I am out of touch my apologies.

For a comparatively young nation, the Australians have developed some interesting rituals.
@artistjoh
@artistjoh 4 года назад
@Jack Perrin the whole ways of moving is ritualistic. This ceremony is conducted like this in Australia at the tomb of the unknown soldier daily, and is seen on ANZAC Day in many parts of the country.

artistjoh, no ritual, more traditional
@artistjoh
@artistjoh 3 года назад
@@dantemadden1533 How is this not a ritual? A ritual is defined as a solemn rite, and this is precisely that. Of course, a ritual can also be a tradition, and a tradition can be a ritual. One does not preclude the other.

Don't other countries do it? I always thought they say catapult party.
@artistjoh
@artistjoh 3 года назад
@@flowerpower8722 A catafalque is ancient. It is the box on which the coffin is placed. A catafalque party are four sentries that stand at the four corners of the catafalque of someone like a head of state, pope etc. A catafalque party is always armed. This comes from past centuries when armed guards were more necessary. In some countries a catafalque party might also guard a memorial for fallen soldiers. Normally the formation of the catafalque party is very formal and it is common to stand, head bowed, hands on the butt of a vertical rifle. Australia is unusual in deploying a cataflaque party at cenotaphs and memorials on ANZAC Day like this and in the elaborate nature of the movements as the sentries take their place.
