Royal Oak: reminds me of a diver's helmet Code 11.59: reminds me of 'How would you define a luxury watch?'

Great video. I’ve gotta be honest, I seem to be one of the few that has always really really likes this watch. There is so much nuance and much more than meets the eye. The case, lugs, and crystal design are awesome!

That's why the AD told me that I can't get any steel royal oak unless I shop on things such as code1159 the dial is totally mediocre
@pistonburner6448
@pistonburner6448 2 года назад
Seems to be the consensus, or at least most find the case to be beautiful but the dial is a disappointment. My theory is that their designers liked the Jacob & Co. Astronomias and they made their own conservative interpretation of it. I think the similarities are too much to be a coincidence: The case is essentially the same design. Same mostly gold-blue colour scheme too. The sapphire uses a curved design to stand out, only in Jacob & Co. it's convex while AP doesn't need the space and is more conservative so they went concave. In both it's a design feature using the curvature to stand out. Even the case flanks: Jacob & Co. has sapphire glass in the flanks and in APs the design is the same and in some Code 11.59 versions there is ceramic in the same place, giving a similar effect. Lugs are also basically identical to some Astronomias. Then of course the movement and dial is totally different from Jacob & Co. as they have to be. That's why the movement is good old trusty AP and doesn't really affect anything in positive or negative because it's not really visible and isn't problematic to adapt to the new design. But that's why the dial doesn't work: that's the part they had to figure out how to balance between traditional and new, and they couldn't think of a good new design for this case. But in the dials the similarities continue: Code 11.59s tend to mainly have nearly identical lacquered colour with the star-sky effect as so many Jacob & Co. Astronomias, of course usually combined with the gold.

Its hipster snobbery 101. If something appeals to to many people enthusiasts will automatically not like it in most hobbies. People who passionate this in most hobbies share this phychlogical need to be different tbh. I agree that's a nice looking watch, but what me and most people consider nice and stylish is frowned on by most watch nerds

I really do not give 2 cents on the opinion of „purists“ but i really dont get this watch. Should it be sporty? The lugs and the crown are very bulky. The case from the front looks more like a dress watch just like the hands. It just seems so incongruent as a package

Nothing in common with the AP design language. It’s so overdone it became ugly. AP relies heavily on their Royal Oak and cannot produce anything alike. Simplicity should be key in their design is my humble opinion.

@@shadimagdy8196 certainly the extra dial choices help. I can’t take to it though. And I would agree not all the Jules range were great but some were just beautiful. Actually the first Seiko Astron was released in 1969 that triggered the Quartz Crises. Royal Oak was designed in 1971, and produced in 1972, so technically the Quartz crises started in late 60s and made the impact in early 70s.

It's long term appeal and collection value will be directly inverse to it's current popularity. It will not sell in large volumes and it's retail lifespan probably limited, at which point in time people will bash their heads on the wall and proclaim "I remember when I could have walked in and bought 10 of these at retail, nobody wanted them". He explained that one basically has to buy a Code at minimum, and then he needs to get permission for who is allocated Royal Oaks. AP watches just don't appeal to me at all. I don't get it. Royals are for big lads wearing lots of other jewelry. The VC watches do the integrated bracelet better and are classier, less garish, in their design language. In my opinion that is.
@Kr0nicridah

Honestly I find the 37mm and 38mm Royal Oaks rather dressy and elegant. With one of those watches, you wouldn’t need any jewellery. I find the Overseas too large, and its chunky bracelet over-designed in comparison with the Royal Oak’s sleek look.

Trinity watches in general just don't do it for me at this point. They have excellent movement finishing and I appreciate that they've made some really high complication watches, but it seems like I'm just told to like them because of the brand, and the brands themselves have just gotten complacent. I rarely find myself wanting for any of these watches. I mean, what does AP have going for it beside the Royal Oak? If I was spending this sort of money for a watch, FP Journe or ALS just look so much better to me.
@Kr0nicridah
@Kr0nicridah 3 года назад
@@OmnipresentCow I used to obsess over Lange for the same reasons as you - I didn’t understand the hype behind the Trinity either. But when I got my first Royal Oak, I realised that classics are classics for a reason. The mere fact that AP is known only for its Royal Oak (which it isn’t to aficionados of the brand) is not in itself a valid reason to discredit it. Porsche builds pedestrian cars like the 4-cylinder Macan and the Cayenne, but its identity will always be associated with its scintillating flat-6 sports cars - and there’s nothing wrong with that, because those cars know their place in the industry. I still wear my Saxonia from time to time for its simplistic beauty, but on the wrist my RO feels like a far more special watch.

I can tell you have spent a lot of time producing this video and the shots are excellent. Same can’t be said about comparing an 11.59 to a Fashion watch. Harping on about the Royal Oak is getting tiring, especially when it was a flop when it was first released. A “Code” is designed to not be understood by everyone and I am afraid you will need to spend a lot more time deciphering this watch if this is all you have to say about it. I own an 11.59 time only and continue to be amazed, discovering detail after detail that generally is only achieved by ppl who produce 3 watches a year by hand. Are there “better” watches out there? Absolutely. Is it a true AP and more than a worthy successor to the Royal Oak? Absolutely.

IMHO, you are just comparing the Code 11.59 to the Royal Oak. That's unfair, it's like comparing The Beatles to any other band. Judged it on it's own merits, I believe it is simply gorgeous. And I say this as someone who has both a 41mm Royal Oak Blue dial 15500ST.OO.1220ST.01 and the smoked blue dial on rose gold 3-hander 15210OR.OO.A002KB.03. Yes, the Royal Oak is the king of my collection, no doubt whatsoever. But it's also true that l love my Code, love the fact that it is not a homage to the lode stone, like the offshore is (although that was a great move). Love the fact that it is designed to within an inch of it's life. I can't believe you have so much hate for this beautiful thing.

It does look like a cheap mall jeweller watch

To be honest, I never knew why they were popular in the first place, but kept my words to myself, as a case of to each to their own taste. I actually like this new watch more than their other watches too. It's a shame that it's so unpopular. They should have released a lot of watches at once instead, and made it look like they were simply diversifying their collection.

i've seen this watch in person, not impressed. The fact that people only care about it because it's AP and sometimes they want you to buy 11.59 before they offer you an royal oak. The 11.59 is bland, not interesting, also somehow a cheap feeling to it.

Code 11.59 has grown on me after recent releases. New calibers are engineering pinnacle in watchmaking. We should bear in mind that it is not easy to develop a brand new concept after legendary Royal Oak. One constructive feedback though: please lower background music volume and speak faster in new videos. Thanks.
