MH 2664 3April 2022. A few friends forwarded me Mariam Mokhtar's video regarding the above flight. One asked whether what she narrated is true. Firstly, in all humility, please may l first respond in English. The Bahasa version will come later...if l have the time. I write better in English than in Bahasa. I admire and respect Mariam for speaking up, for being the voice of the people. Keep up the good work. However, it must be accepted, there are 2 sides of the coin. Having said that, all what Mariam narrated was from what was written by BERNAMA which appeared in several local papers and l have responded to that yesterday. Probably Mariam did not get to read my response. Secondly, this is a minor and irrelevant point. But let's get this straight first. THERE IS NO MORE MAS...Malaysia Airlines System or Mana Ada System, as some like to sarcastically call it. MAS had been delisted from KLSE and the airline renamed MAB, Malaysia Airlines Berhad. In short, it is now called Malaysia Airlines. Towards the end of the video, Mariam posed 10 questions, a few pertaining to MH 370 and MH 17. Let's not digress into the 2 tragic disasters but instead focus on this 3rd April incident. From the media a few thing have been established: . The flight had technical problem. . In the interest of safety, an Air Turn Back ( return to departure airport) was made. . The Commander had duly submitted the Mandatory Incident Report. . Malaysia Airlines, in response to media reports, came up with a Statement...albeit a short one. . The aviation authority, CAAM, representing the Ministry of Transport, had come up with a Press Release stating amongst other things, the pilots handled the situation well, in accordance with the SOPs and they are looking further into the Airlines' safety and operations management, in addition to investigating on what exactly happened. I thought l had covered well in my response yesterday. Following the concern expressed by Mariam in the video, here is something more l have to say: . Let's not harp on the past. The "failures, mismanagement and losses" happened. The people responsible had long gone. Malaysia Airlines is under new management. The airline is on the road to recovery after being hit badly with almost 2 years of grounding due to Covid 19. Let us not hit them further over this " minor " incident which we do not know much as yet. . Safety is the major consideration in the operations of the aircraft. The pilot is a professional. It is for that reason, he chose, in fact the procedure calls for the Air Turn Back to be made. He could continue to land elsewhere, the airports along the route.. Kuching, Miri, Brunei, Labuan, Kota Kinabalu. But at the time of occurence, KLIA was the nearest and the best..with full technical support and where rectification can be made. . I am privy to some information which l cannot disclose because the incident is under investigation. All l can say is that, from my sources, what happened was not exactly how it was sensationalised. . If indeed there was that "drop" a drastic one as sensationalised, that will be recorded not only in the DFDR but also the ground based FOQA. To decipher the DFDR will take a few days. The recorder might even have to be sent overseas. Let's give them time. . The presence of weather appears to be an issue. I would like to believe there is a miscommunication or misunderstanding here. The "bad" weather in question might not be the weather enroute but the unfavourable weather in Tawau that might pose problem for landing if the flight had continued with the technical problem. Okay, l learned the technical problem was due to AIRSPEED DISAGREE. What l can envisage happened, l might be wrong because l don't have the facts; at the point in time, the aircraft was on autopilot. With Airspeed Disagree, the autopilot tripped, causing the "drop" in altitude. But l don't think it was that much..some 6000 feet, as reported. I don't know how somebody in the cabin can tell for certain without an altimeter. I can answer all the 10 questions posed by Mariam. But my reply will be very lengthy and will bore people. However to summarise it all, this incident is sensationalised due to, l think, MISCOMMUNICATION or poor communication by 2 parties, namely the Commander and the Airline. Just my view: . The pilot. Probably he did not inform the passengers clearly and fully of what happened and the need to make the Air Turn Back. Again, l am just guessing..this is due to his poor command in verbal communication, both in Bahasa and English, for the passengers to know and understand on what happened. Under such circumstances, it is important to have the passengers fully informed.This is the problem with our younger generation; they cannot communicate, express and explain well, because of our education system. Also, probably he did not apologise to the passengers to minimise or ease off their anxiety if not fear. This is a very crucial thing to do, to avoid this issue surfacing. The airline...with all the ( adverse) publicity in the media, l would expect the airline to come up with a more detail explanation. Otherwise it will be perceived the airline has something to hide. On matters of public interest especially if it concerns safety, we have to be transparent about it. The airline can make do without this adverse publicity. If l am in the mood, l will answer Mariams 10 questions separately. Now l have problem to have the above written in Bahasa. I have to admit, my Bahasa is not good. Can somebody help? Thank you. CAPT. Inilah akibatnya tiada sistem meritokrasi dan jawatan tinggi GLC mesti dipegang oleh satu bangsa. MAS pernah ada dua org putih CEO pun berhenti dlm masa yg singkat. Kaum minoriti Cina dan India pun tiada ada peluang menjadi CEO.

Even I am surprised by the lack of reporting on this incident! Any such incidents must be investigated on an urgent basis! The plane should have been suspended from service and promptly investigated! Shouldn't such incident be reported to the respective airplane manufacturer! I am truly shocked. One thing for sure... I am not flying MAS ever again!

Looks like a total lack of transparency and accountability by the government and various authorities. How can Malaysia ever hope to compete with countries like Taiwan, Singapore and South Korea. Resignation should be the honourable way forward. That being said, Boeing and other aviation authorities around the world would also be very interested to know what caused the incident as this is exactly the same aircraft type as the one that crashed recently in China.

Mas to investigate? oh please. Lets get an independent investigation team from overseas to go through flight recorder and analyse... MAS will just sweep it under the carpet. and say its due to a some ridiculous reason......

My opinion is for MAS to take care of those who suffered injuries. Treat them well. Let wait for a little longer for investigation results. Remember! the issue is not just about the incident, but the reputation of the maker of the airplane. We don't want to put Malaysia under awkward position and pressure, politically. The government must be careful on what they want to say. This is in the light of what happened to the airplane that fell from sky in China recently.

Haven't we'd been told often enough that flying is safer than driving? However, this statement must be qualified by the caveat that it depends on how efficient and responsible are those managing the whole outfit! With fools in charge, driving on a road with chaotic traffic is a far safer choice!!!

Hi Mariam, MH 2664 KL - TAWAU 3rd April 2022. As promised, my reply to the 10 questions you posed in your video regarding the incident to that flight. May l reply in English? My Bahasa is terrible. Firstly to be fair to you and not to cause any misunderstanding, can l write briefly about myself: I was a pilot for MAS then, for 39 years. Flew many aircraft types. Spent 20 years on Boeing 747, flying mainly to many destinations in Europe then. Last aircraft flown -Boeing 737-800 similar to the one in question and the China Eastern that crashed recently. Total flying hours- 24,000hrs Was in the management for 20 years. Many years in Flight Safety Department. Was an aircraft accident investigator. Last management position :- Director of Flight Operations. So l know a bit about flying and the airline. Most of the answers have been answered in my posting, including in the FB, yesterday and today. Anyway, to: Q 1. What happened? A. CAAM had come up with the Media release on what happened. Essentially there was Airspeed Disagreement leading to incorrect data being fed to the autopilot system which caused it to be confused and become " crazy"- pitching up and in the process of regaining control of the aircraft, the pilots inadvertently applied abrupt force. Please refer to the statement from CAAM. Q2. Why did the aircraft end in a dive? A. As above, the technical problem with the autopilot system due to erratic data to the system. The pilots regained positive control of the aircraft. Q3. Why the Minister of Transport had little to say? A. I answered in my writeup. The CAAM CEO is the right person to handle the matter. And he did it well. Q4. Why MAS said bad weather was a contributory factor when passengers said otherwise? A. I explained that in my writeup. What mattered is the weather pilots saw ahead of them in the cockpit, not by the passengers through side windows. Q5. What action is taken by MAS following Police reports being made? A. I answered that. Anyway we cannot stop people from making police reports. But with due respect to them, there must be basis when making one. Now after the findings have been released by CAAM, there was no justification for the report to be made. Considering the fact that the pilots handled the situation well and saved their lives, it would be a good gesture on their part to apologise to the pilots for making a " malicious " report on them. Maybe a bouquet of flowers to the 2 pilots would be in order. Q6. What will MAS do following the loss of confidence by the travelling public? A. That is subjective and can be a perception. And l have responded to that...they have a choice. They can either fly on Air Asia or take a boat to Tawau. Q7. This is interesting. Why nothing is said by the Union, more appropriate, the Malaysia Airlines Pilots Association, MAPA? A. They are a powerful body, protective of their members. They will defend their pilots if they are unjustifiably being hauled up. In this case, the pilots can be said to be short of being a hero. They performed their task as per the SOP. Q8. People's loss of confidence in MAS following the making of Police Report? A. Really? Again it's a perception. Nothing we can do about it, unless they themselve change the perception. But look at the airline's track record on Flight Safety. The ones that tarnished the record were the 2 B777 disasters.. both not of our making. Q9. The question about the Air Turn Back? A. That was made under the pilot's professional judgement, in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedure in the interest of safety. The airline never say nor assume the Malaysian travelling public are BODOH. On the other hand, if the pilot were continue with the flight to destination in that situation with erratic Airspeed Indication and autopilot malfunctioning, he can be charged for negligence or even endangering the lives of those on board. Something was said about the loss of MH 370. What relevance is there to this incident? I covered a lot in my book" MALAYSIAN AVIATION- THE UNTOLD STORY about MH370 that went missing. My rebuttal to Clare Rewcastle Blair of Sarawak Report on her preview of the book THE DISAPPEARING ACT, was hard hitting. Q10. Of MH 17 being shot down when flying across Ukraine? A. Again what relevance is there is this incident? That happened many years ago when it was MAS. Now its MAB and under new management except for the CEO. Anyway, aircraft fly along designated routes, Airways, as specified by ICAO. If for any reason, for example due to an air exercise and the Airway is closed, then the airline will choose another route to fly. Otherwise there is no reason for them to avoid. Many aircraft flew along that route that day. Afterall the flights are under control. If somebody chooses to shoot down an aircraft, there is nothing the airline or the pilots can do. By the way, there had been several cases of civil commercial aircraft being shot down. I hope the above answers all your questions. Please excuse me for my poor English. All MAS and Air Asia planes should go through at least 10 hours of flight testing before they are put into operation after having been grounded during the lock down.

We heard many years about MAS losses no profit making,,i have an experience encounter about MAS Ticket Office location at 100 North Terrace while studied in Adelaide. It was a lavish ground Office from 20 Floor Municipals building. It could be MAS HQ but it is not just a ticket office in Adelaide a city that dead after 8PM. While Singapore Airlines ticket office they rented small office size of kedai runcit kampung. The administrator mentality between the two competitor Airlines The Winner and the Loser.

Did the pilot suffered myocarditis while flying? Just saying........ Lots of similar incidences in the US where the pilots suffered similar fates, some died, and forced to land or ordered by ground control to proceed to destinations. Myocarditis is common symptom to those getting the jabajaba.

Possible aircart has been park during covid 19 for almost 2 years, just start and run without a complete check on the aircrafts

First rule, until and unless the findings of the fault for the plane diving is conducted and released nobody should be flying MAS until such time. You are taking your lives into their hands. So irresponsible management that there is no effort to release a statement on the state of play. Already MAS is on the nose from MH17 and MH370 for failing to check that boarding a flight will guarantee you reached your destination safely. This will only add a nail into the final demise of the MAS airline. The two airlines that emerged from the break up of Malaysia Singapore Airline showed the calibre of the management of the two airlines. One is constantly rated the best in the world for service and safety whilst the other lurch from one catastrophe to another. With pathetic management including one of the CEOs charging the airline for phantom cargoes at a monthly rate of $10,000 per month, what hope is there for the airline when the management, the workers and all hangers on milking the cow. The cow will eventually run out of milk and die, especially the patronage continue to dwindle. So Sad. 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢

CAAM chief executive Captain Datuk Chester Voo Chee Soon in a press statement today said that based on initial reports extracted from the Flight Data Recorder (FDR), it was determined that a technical issue occurred during the flight. "This was due to a malfunction to the pitot-static system, the instruments that measure pressure differences to determine air speed and altitude. "This malfunction produced a false speed indication onboard, resulting in the aircraft to pitch-up and deactivate the autopilot. "In response to this, the pilot in command's immediate and correct reaction was to regain positive control of the aircraft," said Voo. "These corrective manoeuvres were compounded by bad weather which created passenger discomfort in the cabin," said Voo. This is the "cerita sebenar" of the incident. Equipments can failed during flights. Weather can abruptly change too. It is good to questions everything, but it has to be limited to sound facts and grounded in reality.
