APA In-Text Citations Made Easy

Whenever you use a source, you must have an in-text citation and a reference citation. They're a matched pair--like shoes or gloves. What are the differences between an APA in-text citation and an APA reference citation? How do the two work together?
This video explains how to format and coordinate your APA in-text citations with your APA reference citations in the context of a discussion board post. But the same principles for using APA in-text citations applies to anything that you write which cites sources: DB posts, APA research papers, APA PowerPoints, and so on.
APA in-text citations are just an abbreviated form of a reference citation (which is given only once). But APA in-text citations have to be used in every sentence that borrows from a source. But don't worry. There are simple, easy-to-understand tips and tricks for in-text citations that will have you citing perfectly in just a few minutes. In-text citations--the easy way!

Is it acceptable to have no referencing or citations for a part of an essay if the information is general knowledge? In my case I need advantages and disadvantages of a management style. A lot of them can be thought of on the spot. Or have I got to find a source to link to that advantage/disadvantage even though it’s something everyone would know. Thanks

Unless the ideas came from a specific source, they are yours and do not have to be cited. However, it is always good to back up your own ideas with quotes/agreement from published experts. In the citation for two authors aren't you supposed to use "and" instead of "&?"

It depends on where the citation appears. If you are using the authors' names as part of your own sentence--"Brown and Jones (2019) reported on the high rate of veteran homelessness"--the word "and" is used. For in-text and reference citations the & is used between the two names.

What if you’re quoting an online organization? Like the Mayo Clinic? The authors are simply labeled, “Mayo Clinic Staff” and there are no page numbers, etc.

Hi i have a question for homework that is multiple choice. At around 4 minutes you explain this but i am still unsure of the answer. 2) If you are using the same source in a paragraph, what do you not need to repeat? a) the title b) page number c) parenthetical citation d) date In the video i know you for sure said the date does not need to be repeated. But what about the page number or title? Would the answer simply just be the parenthetical citation?

If you paraphrase part of the work, you use a page or paragraph number. If you paraphrase (summarize) the entire work, no page or paragraph number.

As long as the in-text citation is a part of the sentence it refers to, it doesn't matter which page the citation goes on. And remember, the period for the sentence goes after the in-text citation.

When writing in WORD and using the Reference tab, there is no option to cite a “video” such as this one. You can generate the citation by choosing “website” although it will not depict that the source is a video. Your video helped me - I will now manually add [video] in the citation to properly cite the RU-vid source. If anyone knows of a work-around for Word, I’d be interested in seeing it. Thanks!

You use the "as quoted in" convention with triple quotes: Russell writes, "'The Tyrannosaurus rex began as a vegetarian,'" (as quoted in Barnabell, 2019, p. 12). The reference citation cites Barnabell and makes no mention of Russell.

Do you mean authors who contributed a chapter to a book (anthology)? Author, A. A., & Author, B. B. (Year of publication). Title of chapter or article. In A. A. Editor & B. B. Editor (Eds.), Title of book (pages of chapter). Location: Publisher.

I encounter the perfect article but it’s not giving me the date that it was written. It only says McGraw-Hill. Three years ago. It’s that to be assumed that it was written in 2016? I do t know if I should add the name with that date.

This is a great video -- thanks very much. As a note, there a few minor errors on the citations: 1) You advocate that if no publication date is provided, one should "leave blank" that information in the in-text citation (1:54); in APA formatting, if no publication date is provided, the citation should include 'n.d' (signifying no date); 2) When providing a Reference page citation for a source with two authors there needs to be a comma after the first author's name [e.g. Halpern, B., & ...]; 3) In APA format, a state abbreviation is required, even for well known cities such as New York or Los Angeles [the one exception is if the publisher is a university that contains the name of the state]; 4) On the slide beginning at 5:18, the sentence period should follow, not precede, the end-of-paragraph citation [although I realize that the goal of this slide was to show how to more appropriately cite an end-of-paragraph citation]. THANKS AGAIN FOR THE VIDEO.
