Worked with Snake Blocker...and we've trained under both Robert Redfeather AND Robin Price....Great martial artists and solid people. Hard to beat the character of these teachers!
The guy in the blue bandana is Snakeblocker! He's is a JKD/Kali brother of mine. We're both Full instructors in JKD/Kali here in Colorado! He's legit a legend... his main school is in Kansas but he also teaches in Denver. Snake is one of the top Apache knife fighting instructors... plus he teaches it to military units here as well!
As someone who is in a wheelchair and can walk on a cane only a few feet and back due to constant pain in my back and hips, running is never an option for me. I carry two knives at all times, and I utilize techniques when unarmed that are a combination of joint locks, basic hand and elbow strikes, a basic low kick or two that can be used from a seated position, etc., and I've sort of put together my own little system of techniques that I can use to defend myself because throughout my life people have never taken kindly to my being disabled in either of the state I lived in or the one I'm stuck in now, and I've had to defend myself against physical attackers who think it's cool to start a fight with a disabled person. (I also have OCD and Tourettes Syndrome even before the back and hip issues factored into it.) I may be in a wheelchair now, but I still refuse to be a victim.
@@SonnyCrocket-p6h Part of my specific case of Tourettes Syndrome is that certain sounds (including gunfire) cause me to convulse and twitch, so me and firearms are a bad idea lol Before I was in a wheelchair, I trained martial arts since the age of 19 (I'm currently 31 and still train to what degree I can given the recent wheelchair confinement) so knives and bare hands are more what I'm used to anyway.
@@SQUATCH100 Thanks so much! I'm sorry you also have your struggles, but I hope you don't mind me saying that I'm glad you're here and I wish the best for you every day, my friend. :)
Great seeing my longtime brother Snake Blocker get some highlights here. His Apache Knife Fighting and Battle Tactics is an excellent program with some really special cultural content. Snake is an excellent instructor and a truly inspirational person. 😎🤙
In a knife fight expect to be cut. Honestly this is the first knife fight video that really shows some very good realistic fighting. Years of training in weapons especially knives just to find out most people think that knife fighting is like the movie's especially attacking hands is a common thing well not really but a person attacking will tend to be blocked and you get cut on the hands or arms. Which isn't a problem as that may disable the person
My teacher told me about one of his Tae Kwon Do students who fought a guy with a knife. The student didn't know the other guy had a knife, but "he was doing some kind of funny swishing movements with his hand across my belly, and I'm wondering what the hell he was trying to do." It was only after the fight was over (I think the student knocked the other guy out) that he realized from his shredded shirt that the other guy had a knife in his hand and was slashing his abdomen. From that story I surmised that in a real (not TV) knife fight, the guy with the knife often doesn't advertise he has a knife before the fight begins. Or, that you can be fighting a guy with a knife and not realize he has a knife in his hand.
Trained with a friend who was certified by Dan Inosanto, for a year. Later another friend and I trained for years, but for 6 mos diis nothing but knife drills, and chalk knife sparring. A lot of fun and very instructive.
Robert Redfeather is the founder of Apache Knife Combat. While they are both Apache, he and Snake Blocker teach different methods. Robert has been teaching his system for many years to civilians, law enforcement, and the military.
This is exactly how we trained for knife fighting . Professor Lon A.S.A.X.s Martial Arts now school closed destroyed by the lockdown . Miss training like this myself .
Knife fighting training is fun as hell, and is a skill everyone interested in self defense should train. One thing about knife vs pistol though: It certainly is nice to have a bigger knife against a knife, but you have to practice drawing it against someone rushing you with a knife just like if you have a gun, unless you are walking around with the knife in your hand all day, so the 21 foot rule still applies to you if you carry a knife instead of a pistol. To draw a pistol against a knife wielder rushing you, an option is to drop to your back with your kicking leg between you and draw on the ground, then put three in their chest. A pistol fight is a knife fight at long range. You either have cover or you don't.
Speaking of ancient knife fighting. I have found that Spain and Europe in general had some very interesting martial arts techniques. It's a shame they were not all preserved through time, although much of the modern military literature and manuals actually derive from those techniques. I specially like the dagger and cape or sword and dagger styles used in medieval Spain, just pure functionality.
Nice video! let me add something.... What isn't discussed enough is the different between minor wounds, major wounds, disables, and killing moves. You can easily slash or stab someone superficially, and it will work on weaklings and regulars. But people with adrenaline and rage can and will ignore the minor stuff during the fight. It's the one who is able to do major damage, disables or killing moves first who wins the fight. Both people get cut, but the question is who gets to live, and who gets dead. This is where the lipstick test can give people the wrong impression if they dont know that.
I love illustrismo principles from your last video. Going to try out the Ray Floro course to get practice for now. My sifu used to teach a knife fencing class decades ago. Been fascinated ever since.
Another thing about the knife vs. the gun. Sure, if given the choice in an everyday societally calm and ‘peace-time’ environment, a gun is the better weapon to have. However . . . A gun is - for the most part - a ‘one trick pony.’ (one can, I suppose, use it as a bludgeon, but it’s not especially good for that) Basically, it’s a heavy, bulky, ammo-limited shooter and that’s about it. Whereas a knife on the other hand is EVERY BIT AS DEADLY in close quarters (and a bit longer if skilled throwing is available), and as you said, better in close, I agree with you there. But it’s also a tool with MUCH MORE VERSATILITY. A gun is a killing tool, and that’s pretty much it. A knife is a killing tool as well, but it’s also a SURVIVAL TOOL gifted with many many other uses imbedded within that little hunk of simple steel, as anyone who has been in the wilderness WITHOUT ONE KNOWS ALL TOO WELL! As for me, in an all around ‘keep me alive’ situation, I’ll take a good blade over a firearm every time!
I would imo put the importance of range and knife length 2nd to keeping a very sharp blade. 100% i agree with the knife lead technique. awesome. get well soon. I remember having to decide either wait until my knee fails or give my resistance up and take the slam. i'm happy i didn't give into ego or anger.
Finally Apache knife fighting. Yes, i feel the same too. Any deadly knife fighting styles resemble of this stuff must be bad ass. But what i like they switch both hands, left & right. Thanks for share this. Love this channel.
Bro!!! Thank you for this video! I love the content and have always loved the Apache k ice fighting yeah issues. If I were in your area I'd love to train!!! Regards. Either!!!
Robert redfeather book Apache knife Fight like the wind( he does have video on RU-vid) The guy in the video with blue headband is a Snake Blocker he is a instructor for military in hand to hand combat and a great knife fighter in his own right
Preach bro. Most people know what they would do until they get it tested in reality. I use to train to slap the inside wrist and the back of the hand to disarm the knife and the 1st time I grabbed his arms and wrestled it away and the 2nd time I got my 1st stitches because I grabbed the blade but at least I didn't get killed.
Very cool video. I’ve heard Apache Knife fighting techniques are pretty legit. But if I could suggest something, it would be to give the lead hand icepick grip a try while employing a modified Philly Shell stance. It makes the icepick grip much, much more effective without surrendering range, and allows for a quick offense stabbing attacks at your opponent while protecting your vitals and inside flexor tendons. It’s even more effective if the dagger has a ring, and it allows you to deploy it quicker and while using a primary weapon (ie a firearm). When your ACL gets better give it a try, and I hope you heal soon. ✌️
Maybe if you see the knife before you are cut or stabbed the adrenaline/ dopamine will kick in... but if you are just all of the sudden stabbed, you just feel the impact. It felt like a liver punch, then I couldn't breathe... Ya, shock knives also make noise sometimes. I guess the best is a shock knife with lipstick or sharpie marker taped to it.
6:44 you are right when you fight even without knife but sharp items you won't feel it until later. i fought with a platoon mate while we were doing area cleaning and later on i discovered two long cuts on my left thigh. the cuts aren't that deep but now i have nice scars on my thigh. :p
Hope you heal up bro, know how you feel still suffer with a neck injury from jujitsu from 5 yrs ago, sick video mate you just may be changing my attitude towards weapons in self defence but unfortunately I live in Australia and we have some of the worst weapons laws in the world, you can't even carry mace without risking jail.
Sorry your ACL is busted. Had an ACL MCL tear in the Marines. It sucks but you'll get right if you listen to your doctor lol. I gotta subscribe. You're a right minded guy. High character traits. You could roast this Apache knife system easily if you weren't the man you are. The net loves trolling and it's low hanging fruit. Some people get off on trashing anything they can. I appreciate you're not falling into the rotation and fairly critiquing videos on their substantive value. You're pumping positive energy into the universe. It shall return to you!
When I spar with swords I prefer to see the target area of the body as a rectangle similar to how you described here. The box goes from across left and right shoulder to shoulder and down to left and right hip to hip. I love to snipe hands but when I have control of the fight by breaking their guard and getting through their defense I go for torso cuts and thrusts. Something eventually gets through because I rapid fire strikes that keep them guessing my angle of attack but they always aim at the part of the body that is hardest to dodge blades with...the torso. Legs, hands and head can dodge fast but the torso does not.
Shock knife! Now THAT is great tool for sparring - or to test if your defense against knife attack works, The shock knife commands respect as much as real blade does and you feel the hits even thru tshirt. without obvously being letal. So from time to time to peal away the layers of bullshit, we spar with shock knife in the mix - eyeopening ! xD
I began Baraw Sugbo nine years ago , which has been a plus to mix with kali and bladed combatives. I am always recommending Baraw Sugbo as a component of knife defense, it is definitely a reality when tussling for the blade, switching hands and must have skill for those who train weapons. Impressed to see this bought up in the comments
Are there any tips you can give me about avoiding injury in sparring I kind’ve see it as a double edged sword cause you have to spar hard in order to pressure test techniques you’ve learned but also a lot of people end up injured for sparring too hard
Play spar. Like Muay Thai, focuses on. Only spar hard in competition or when preparing. Drill, drill, private classes. You only need to pressure test so much. Knees over toes has a joint/tendon harding exercises. Regular lifting can help also.
I am 60 years old. I have been a butcher since 15. A knife in my hand my whole life. Never do I want to be in this position. Got stabbed once, didn't even know till my car seat was soaked. Ruuuuun.
I've tried to put together a group for stuff like this too. I feel your pain. If you were near Chicago I would totally be down lol. We use to do class elimination free for all with rubber knives with Poole chalk along the edge. I do like the lipstick idea
Loved the videos! When will a UFC style knife fighting tournament exist? Perhaps a special made vest and helmet? Look at TKD or amateur boxing or even Olympic wrestling. The Apache system is taught in the Marines, but a lot of jarheads might not have seen it that way. There was a low kick/sweep deployed, and some elbow blocks used that shouldn't be overlooked. I have yet to see those 2 techniques expanded upon! ❤
Oh the uk military and OSS type stuff does stabbing in the kidneys while grabbing the face from behind. Of course. Same with ninjutsu, and chinese opera.
Awesome episode brother. I live in the south east and these cats are convinced in guns. I’ve tried to explain they are not John Wick and within 5 feet their guns are useless. Thank you for sharing the good word in all your videos and especially this one
Excellent commentary. It is about time these individuals, that try to sensationalize critique and make it seem like a drill, or a technique, constitutes a total system failure, get called idiots. There are bad habits and good habits and that should be open to discussion.
Its not really original per se its is reconstructed similar to 'Okichitaw', first nations never had formalized 'styles' of martial arts, some did practice war (Iroquois for eg.) some just used their skills from hunting (Ojibwa for eg,) other had various warriors "societies" which did revolve around philosophies of fighting designed to prove bravery for eg Contraries, also known as "baaxpée" in the Crow language, were individuals who performed actions in reverse or contrary to normal behavior. This included fighting in reverse during hand-to-hand combat. They would deliberately engage in battle facing away from their opponents, moving and fighting backward. This behavior was part of a broader set of actions and rituals that defined their role as contraries, which also included speaking in opposites and doing the opposite of what was expected in various situations.
Excellent video. Liked and now subscribed. By the way you might want to look into stem cell injections for your torn ACL. Avoid surgery and get 100% healed.
Appreciate that! I am starting stem cells next week along with PRP. I am avoiding surgery. Did it on my other leg and i still have issues and arthritic pain. I feel stable on my leg now and will get a good brace and strengthen it heavily.
I'm just curious, you can deploy a knife from a sheath/pocket faster than a gun from a holster? I'm not saying the gun is the better choice. I fail to see how it's faster. If you train more with one than the other, you should be faster with the one that gets the most training.
You seen the blond Karate guy that travel h word and meet masters? He meet an Asian guy doing a system against knife attacks that I actually liked. For the first time (almost) I think it would work! (Maybe check it out?) All other mostly do not have more than one technique that might work and the rest I don't believe will. That Karate dude is so nice to everybody he meet and I guess that's why Steven Segal gave him an interview.
Yeah I had to defend myself from a knife attack in Thailand (from another foreigner, not a Thai) and I got stabbed straight through the hand and didn't feel it at all. In fact at first I thought it was his blood because there was a lot of his blood everywhere. Then I was like what's that? Look down at my hand and it's bleeding like crazy, just pouring out, because the guys knife had gone straight through my palm at the area where the muscles that connect your thumb and forefinger metacarpals attach, almost at the wrist. Having the surgeon fix that up was rather unpleasant because he had to fish around the would to see if I needed any internal stitches. I still have the scar, don't talk about it publicly in person, but I am just some Joe Schmoe here in the youtube comments so I feel ok talking about it.
I miss blade training in a group as well. You addressed most of my comments, but I have one that I think is important enough to still add. In close quarters things are very dynamic. If you miss with a stab or slash, just keep moving until the situation resolves and you are safe. If you miss with a shot however, you may kill a bystander.
I'm assuming they put the lipstick on their hands because it simulates the grim reality of your hand getting covered in blood . My instuctor had us do that with corn syrup. It's slippery and sticky at the same time . I like at 3:36 when the large gentleman got knocked down. At my age , 58, I'm not going to get back up as fast as I used to either . These are things you need to address when you get old and train for . As well as why learning to fall and roll to begin with is also key .
Just a disclaimer to your video, Eli, self preservation with a bladed weapon is difficult to be defense able in an american court of law ..... REGARDLESS of how justified it is.
Good video all the way around. But have you never hunted or fished? Or killed a snake. Shot a possum or raccoon or coyote? it’s not difficult to stick a knife in something. You just generally don’t want to be that close!
More like fencing…seem to have forgotten past…I don’t think apaches danced around in a straight line like their on a fencing mat…they would have finished the fight straight away…that’s the difference between modern people and olden warriors..they don’t act like a different generation of people who lives depended on it
Not impressed. As others have said, it is not Apache, but FMA that he learned and re-branded. Redfeather is another such dude. Show me a native/First nations/etc. That has NEVER taken an Asian martial art class and you might see something legit. For the most part, the natives did what the white man did: let go of old fighting as guns entered the scene. For the four white shirt guys you can see way too much reaching without purpose, their arms would be cut to shreds. Fight with your knife and stay behind it, until you have weaked your attacker enough to move in. Reverse grip is very historical, but best reserved for when the other guy has no weapon. Range is king in most fighting. Note: Not dissing military men, just the dishonestly of marketing Asian stuff you learned as "Apache" or "Native".
Very nice video, congratulations..but in that group of people training knife fighting sparring it is clear that a fat ass with no mobility is a dead man walking, a knife fighting for me is like a snake fighting: a slash or a hit with a knife is like a cobra bite in my opinion so you have to be fast, smooth, sneaky and stuff
