Do you visualise while reading?
@arobinreads

I do. But not very detailed I think. And I also don't like the super in depth descriptions either

No. I always thought the concept of a "mind's eye" was a metaphor until a few years ago. I generally see literature as a medium for themes. And while I like plot and character, it's the themes that win me over or lose me. So, I don't see aphantasia as a negative because not getting bogged down in what stuff looks like makes it easier to see under the surface at what's really going on.

I always am visualising while reading, and as soon as something doesn't match my head cannon. I can't unsee it!

Aha yep, I recently read Howl's Moving Castle and all I could see was the Ghibli characters. Not that I'm mad about it

Well researched, informative and pleasantly calm. But a note on 2:30: 26% of aphantasics have reported a complete lack of multisensory imagery (according to “A cognitive profile of multi-sensory imagery, memory and dreaming in aphantasia”). I have complete aphantasia: all senses and emotion. I like funny dialogue and when I read, I want to know what happens next in the story. Long descriptions, on the other hand, are boring, and I quickly confuse characters. Interestingly I know the feeling of being able to sink so far into a book that I no longer even notice how I turn the pages. But it takes me a while to get into that state.

Thank you so much and thanks for sharing! So interesting how we all experience it differently.

Danika said it very well. I love reading, I’ve been so immersed in a book I didn’t realize the plane was landing until we hit the ground. I think aphantasia impacts my patience with authors who use a lot of words to describe the surroundings. I want to get to story.

I pretty much have hyperphantasia, but I definitely don't visualize every scene I read in a book, or the details of every character's complexion. I had never reckoned that until watching this video.

Great video! I took the test and answered 'no image' to most, but 'dim image' to a handful of questions, which apparently has a name too! Hypophantasia - *mostly* image-free thinking. Even seeing my comment on your community post, how I described normally 'feeling' descriptions more than seeing them, was very in line with the people with aphantasia you quoted. Very interesting! Thanks for introducing me to new language to describe my experience!

That's exactly what I thought and why I included you. When I did the poll I hadn't started research yet but the more I read, the more I saw what your experience could be. You're more than welcome! ♥️

I used to write descriptions of “rooms” in a fantasy text game. The best descriptions touched many of the senses. Not just what it looked like, but the temperature, were there any sounds, what did it smell like, was there a taste in the air? What other sensations did you feel when you entered?

Yes that's fantastic. Honestly before this video, I didn't really think about it, but now, I know how important it is.

If asked to picture a Macintosh apple I can recall a picture of one. If asked to picture my mother I usually can recall an old vaguely representative one. I rarely see Human faces in my mind.

I'm 101% aphantasiac. I'm curious to know what effects reading has on a brain of someone with aphantasia compared to a neurotypical person.

I don’t really get a picture :( I think that’s why I always mix up characters, because I only have the name to go on and I’m bad with names :P

Oh well there you go! I hope it was helpful then! I'm bad with names too honestly but descriptions and faces I'm much better at.

I have aphantasia. I think one difference is that my understanding of the physical appearance of a character is limited to what is actually described on the page. My mind does not fill in other physical features that are not described, as is required when you create a mental image. For example, if the book does not describe a character’s hair color, my mind would not assign one. It would just be unknown information (which is probably not important for the story anyways). By the way, it is the same if you ask me to imagine an apple. If you then ask me “What color is it?”, I would say that I don’t know because you didn’t tell me. It could be red, green, or yellow.

If someone wrote a book with no visual queues, I would probably enjoy it more as someone who has aphantasia. Smells especially bring up feelings that work as descriptions.

I'd be so curious to see what that would be like! It might already exist

I have multy sensory aphantasia, I guess Im missing out, makes sense why I dont enjoy reading as much as others. But I still sort of imagine the things I read, I dont see them but I kind of use memories to reference and imagine , even if its all dark ,so I kind of have and a idea of what going on a visual way😅 its hard to explain 😂😂😂

I cannot visualize while reading and it's kind of put me off of reading almost entirely. Whenever I tried picturing the apple, I couldn't see anything, only think of the word apple.
