How do you communicate with someone with aphasia?
How do you teach someone with aphasia?
Listen to the video with your loved one.
Then, ask yourselves, "What tip would best help our situation?"
Then, implement the tip and practice using it.
It takes effort and planning to begin to use strategies for aphasia.
David Dow had a massive stroke at age 10 destroying nearly 2/3 of the left brain. He was left with global aphasia.
School issues were incredibly difficult for David as he could not speak, read, or write. Aphasia is an invisible disability that affects language - not intellect.
Here, David and his mom Carol Dow-Richards, Director of the nonprofit organization The Aphasia Recovery Connection, share tips for school staff to learn more about aphasia and how they can best support students with this diagnosis. These tips are also good for tutors, caregivers, or those working with or for people with aphasia.
David and Carol wrote about his story and recovery.

Than you so much for the tips and for showing us what aphasia is and what is not. Congratulations to David and his mom. It's really hopeful to watch that recovery from aphasia is very possible.

Thank you so much for the GREAT tips! I was working as a registered nurse in a Definitive Observation Unit/Primary Stroke Center in a hospital. Then I had a massive stroke on 2012; I was 39. It was very ironic. I had global aphasia and I had right-side weakness. My speech pathologist (Allison) was awesome! My speech is better now. I still get frustrated sometimes. Most of the days are positive. Thank you for the excellent tips! Carol and David are my heroes. (My daughter help me write this.)

I enjoy listening to you and your son. I bought the books, and I read them to work on my comprehension; it has been helping me immensely in learning how to accept my aphasia. Thank you for sharing!
