In this video I show a few ways to make beats in Ableton that are a bit crazy and all over the place, similar to that of Aphex Twin, but I'm not going to show you how to sound like Aphex, because only he can do that. Support me on Patreon to download this set plus more.

Try using an LFO on the Arpeggiator Style to break up the pattern. Another on the Note length gives you a variation of, well, note lengths. Try rates around 1/3 of a bar on Random waveform to start with. Use a mapping M4L device like MIDI Shaper to lock the values into 1/2, 1/4, 1/8,... if that's what you need.

Great techniques. I guess I'm a peasant and I use the random note technique (you can do different type of drums by having the same number of each corresponding to the random value; or just different tracks). Been using LFO sample and hold on parameters lately also; and made a little thingy in max for live for chance of notes and velocity.

A much bettet to this. And the way Aphex does it. Is better explained by this guy ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5yQRp4j2RQM.html Aphex does not randomize his drums. He's a master, he meticulously program's them manually. But you to take the note size down to 64th. Anyone can "Get the computer to do it". But that's cheating

For more control you can put the midi fix + inst on an input monitored midi track. Output from the midi track with all the generative clips goes to the new track with your instrument on it. You can now make dummy clips on the inst track that have automations for all your midi fx and inst parameters - but they are separate clips from the ones generating all your note information. This also allows for you to route multiple midi tracks to a single instrument

I don’t know who is more insane. This guy that programs the hell out of it and does the job within few patterns or me that I write and automate manually all my patterns and I end with 30 patterns only for my drumbeats? I personally find this awesome (I do) but also I don’t believe that this technique has a lot of control or detail over the drumbeat. I use randomizers(!) in other stuff but but on my beats. Great stuff though. Really interesting

Hi Ned ! Thank you so much for sharing this. This kind of beats always sounds as mystery to me and every tutorial or personnal attemps I did wasn't even close to what Aphex Twin's beats sounds like. You did a fantastic job. Quick questions: do you have a recommandation of where I can find drums sample (808 as you have, but also MFB, Vermona...). I would like to try what you did but can't find 10,12,16 samplesof the same sound with only slights differences... Thanks again !

Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but when I adjust the Probability macro it also effects how many of the samples in the Sampler that get triggered. Like if I set it to 84 it won't play any of the samples above the velocity value 84. What's up with that?
