Really can't help but think of my friend who accidentally overdosed in 2011, the biggest fan of James. He would've shit himself over these amazing tracks that have come to light. At least I made it here.
Really touched by all the thumbs up everyone. Just wanna say Computer Controlled Acoustic Instruments EP would've easily been his favorite. It's definitely mine. Hope you're all jamming it.
Richard fluctuated here between an ardent love for late 1970s Germanic electronic mastery (Kraftwerk/CAN/NEU) and Detroit's raw inventiveness that followed a decade or two later.
I listened to his Selected Ambient works Vol 1 and 2 all through the 90's. He's is truly one of kind. I have only seen him live twice. Once was at an early Big Day Out music festival here in Sydney, mid 90's and another at the Hordern Pavilion. Amazing!!!
I was quite young when this video was published. I have a vivid memory of lying in bed with this playing on my iPad. I woke up when the track 19 Ssnb was playing at 40:00, it takes me right back to my old bed during the winter of 2015...
Funny that track 5 is called 'early morning clissold'. Its early April - 6.30am, the sun is rising, the sky is clear, I'm looking out my kitchen window watching birds playing in the bare trees with this playing in the background. I thought... this music was made for times like this... then I look at the track title! Gave me a smile!
Had the same thing, when listenning to him at first i thought he sounded quite basic and now im in love with his complex and unique style, i think it takes listenning to him a couple times before you can really understand and enjoy his music
Some heartfelt moments on here. That has always distinguished RDJ/AFX from other electronic artists, especially from this era. He takes sounds which are often steril on their own, and finds ways to bring out true emotion. Whether it is that of a prankster, or pulling out the feelz; Aphex Twin is for the sensitive ladies and gentlemen.
aphex is great but I think it's kind of silly to say he's the only electronic artist putting emotion in his songs. autechre - "amber" and dj sprinkles - "midtown 120 blues" both hit me in the feels to name a few
I have a lot of observations on this music, but I think I ought to keep them to myself. Richard D. always says that he doesn't make music for anyone but himself, and sometimes I think that's how I should make my thoughts.
These tracks are great and what he's doing by taking a vote on what's to be mastered on WATMM is very smart and giving to his fans. I'm sure there is more "challenging" stuff in his attic/basement/bank vault and I would love to hear more ambient stuff over ten minutes. Haven't heard some of these synth sounds since I was a kid watching "In Search Of" or "Dr. Who". Thanks for posting this and the others.
dope ass track, listening to this why I reply to comments for 3+ hours straight. I'm about to fall over and fall asleep had my teeth removed and can hardly stay conscious with all the drugs flowing through me. my vision is blurred. time to rest.
If this is not being listened to because of the validity of the material, people clearly haven't listened to much of Aphex's output circa Ambient Works. It's strikingly obvious that it's genuine.
Thank you again for the song: this is more the style I wanted: it's thinking/studying/music that makes you feel like you're doing something smart. I can never find this style of music when I want it.
every time i think its possible not to love this man's music more, something else surfaces and sends me back to the first time hearing Come to Daddy. GOAT
I step in and out of listening to AFX and I return here to find yet again something quite incredible.....no actually its mindblowing and beautiful in so many ways.
I have a similar approach as you describe, sten!, with listening to his albums. but so, actually, today I was out driving and opened up me CD wallet as usual - Aphex Twin's "Classics" caught my eye this time. after being kind of intentionally ignored. not sure how I felt the last time I listened , but somehow believed that I potentially I wasn't even into it anymore. A good personal RDJ re-ignition today, for sure! Compilation album by him Released 30 January 1995 Genre Acid techno, hardcore techno Length 74:03 Label R&S Records first track is kind of, meh. my main issuous-gripe (hahaha I made a single word salad) with track 1 is simply that it uses this uber classic, - dare I do say generic -Didgeridoo sample vibe used extensively for early and mid 90's Trance of the era the next two tracks are solid what I like call (classic) militant acid techno I'll leave rest to your own curiosity, and so with that, go enjoy the fruck of of it and, my closing suggestion it be Aphex Twin -"Orphan", if you haven't listened to yet or maybe spelled Orphans
Right at the end there is a hint of Tubeway Army going on. That takes me proper back.....1hr 21mins well spent. Will be listening to the other compilations.
Object lessons in the principle of 'less is more'. I like the clear, uncluttered arrangements and avoidance of fat synth sounds. Electronica chamber music.
thanks so much for this selection it really is flush with colour and beauty! great to have these tracks arranged like this and so easy to access.. here's hoping that RDJ will give us Selected Ambient Works Vol. 3!
As a Cornishman, RDJ resonates within me more than any other artist......I Often wonder how much of Kernow influences his music, then, Now and into the future.. just Bliss
