the idea of the speed was i did the math to find the speeds for which the pitches are shifted down to a different set of tones in standard tonality. so you can slow something to those speeds without removing the pitches from standard tonality. though richard prefers microtuning, so they probably weren't in ST in the first place. the speeds came from another project where i thought the artist put out songs sped up, and i wanted to find the original speeds.
@@Thrna_1 yeah. halving the speed lowers pitches an octave, because an octave is a doubling of wavelength. so 50% is 12 semitones. 25% is 24 semitones. so it's a curve. i forget how i did the math but i found my document with the speeds for you. -50% to go down 12 tones -47.026845282035236771908735252683% to go down 11 semitones -43.876897584531350928323347516041% to go down 10 semitones -40.539644249863946664125001471976% to go down 9 semitones -37.003947505256341761639469636089% to go down 8 semitones -33.258007291498281758458405940777% to go down 7 semitones -29.289321881345247559915563789515% to go down 6 semitones -25.08464615616592506003596339851% to go down 5 semitones -20.629947401590026262414718036385% to go down 4 semitones -15.910358474628545696887452376679% to go down 3 semitones -10.910128185965657843354283809603% to go down 2 semitones -5.6125687318306503358086843332466% to go down 1 semitones
@@rulerofroombas1443 i am a fucking idiot then, but i am used to pretentious aphex twin fans so idk. (plus other comment said thing like "i prefer 52.45%" or some shit)
I like the original better, but this version is the reason I like the original version so much. It helps me hear all the detail. That said this version has its own emotional qualities that you can't hear elsewhere. I just love the fast rdj stuff. So beautiful.
Ell Bee BoC was never trying to be crazy. They’ve always tried to evoke feeling, atmospheres and nostalgia with a more chilled out (sometimes sinister) sound
I read a comment in which someone that he's making/made his songs, so that they still sound good when you slow them down. It seems to work best on vinyl players
@@jokokusnuss I think he is actually slowing them down to program the more complicated parts and then speeding them back up again. Most complex patterns sound great slowed down - I used to play my drum n bass records slow and they became something else.
This floods our minds with memories lost. Memories both forgotten, and entirely nonexistent beforehand. We feel weird, but this feels lovely at the same time. We suppose it's nice. A forgotten mall, a strange globe water fountain, a twisting labyrinth of a store that sells computers. It truly is odd. -💚
I thought the slowed down version was played for the first time at Funkhaus (Berlin) in 2018. Thanks for the info I’ll go check if there’s a live recording somewhere of his performance at Ilosaarirock!
It just goes to show RDJ’s technical detail, it’s like each arrangement plays off one another yet is equally independent and the track still sounds cohesive, master work
The more I listen to slowed down Aphex Twin, the more I'm unable to wrap my head around how he made those tracks. The musicality in the beats alone are outstanding, I wonder how it's like to percieve music as RDJ does.
I can't seem to find the article now, but I do believe I remember reading that when he produces tracks he initially starts to mix them at a lower bpm and then later on increases it to give the track more "liveliness."
These minute details are so hard to miss. Some of these feel like they are not even slowed down at all and are going at normal speeds. Some of them I have noticed because I've heard this song a million times but it just gives credit to the drum arranging, instrumentation, sound design yadda yadda yadda
Not exactly drum and bass drums. No amen break . Basically the amen break is that kick drum on the 1st beat and the snare on the 3rd. That same kick snare pattern in 99% of dnb. Aphex twin always had IDM drums and with his own syncopated style and almost breaks like drums
Makes the optimum lounge music with details for music lovers if slowed down. Should be played in bars so you can take your girlfriend and still enjoy. Agree with with others about the details revealed. R D James was in class of his own. Can't begin to contemplate the hows of producing these x number of years ago
