I'll be talking at APIDays Paris (6-8 Dec 2023)!
I'll talk about observability and how it helps us improve API Governance, security, and operations.
APIs are transforming the way we build applications and deliver business value. We use APIs to drive integrations between microservices, to power browser and mobile applications, and to offer products and services. However, APIs bring unique operational challenges. APIs make it difficult to trace user flows and sessions, detect malicious behaviour, and track issues.
In this talk, I’ll explain how we leverage observability to address these challenges.
We'll see how the three pillars of observability (logs, traces, metrics) help us put together the right data to answer relevant questions about our APIs, such as how are users engaging with the API, what the most common errors are, and what the most common types of attacks are. We’ll see how to capture this information and use it to improve our API designs.
We'll also see how observability powers API Governance by supplying valuable data such as whether the API meets the expected KPIs, whether clients find the API easy to use, and whether they follow the expected user flows. We'll also see examples of how observability helps us trace errors across distributed systems and event-driven architectures.
Finally, we'll take a look at the landscape of API observability tooling and standards like OpenTelemetry. We'll see what questions we need to answer before choosing the right tooling for us. We’ll also see how we put together a minimum viable observability solution.
