The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory's robotics work dates back to 1958, when a study group on "adaptive machines" was created under Director Ralph Gibson. A few years later, the group's most famous projects were introduced to the world, drawing media attention for their innovative capabilites. Two self-sustaining robots, affectionately known as "Ferdinand" and the "Hopkins Beast," were test beds for system autonomy. This film of the Beast is from 1965 and shows several staff, including John Chubbuck and Leonard Scheer, two of APL's robotics pioneers.
