Ana, I disagree. You do not live a quiet, simple, non-impactful life at all. You are very brave and are changing the world every day. You reached out and began a relationship with someone from a different world. You left your country to be with that person, and because of your principles. And, most importantly, you decided to share your experiences on the internet and by doing that, transform all of us. You help me every time you post. You present thought provoking content from a deeply kind and human perspective. In a world where neighbors are enemies, as it is here in the US, you restore my hope in my fellow man. I think you under-estimate the impact you are having and how valuable your efforts are. I bet every person here watches eagerly for your next post, as I do. I bet everyone feels they have made a new friend, as I do. Your choices have brought you to a place where you are benefitting people around the world, and are very important to the work of spreading kindness and empathy. Years ago I was a software engineer for Visa, the credit card company. I worked on projects that benefitted the whole world: the creation of the debit card, making debit cards usable at the grocery store and gas pump. I did important work. And while I feel a quiet sense of satisfaction, I gave up much to be devoted to work. Did it improve my life? Not really. I made a lot of money but much of it was stolen in an investment Ponzi scheme. I’m old now and look back and think I could have been traveling and camping. I could have spent more time with my son. I will never know if I made the right choice. My choices led me here: old, sick, living in isolation, estranged from much if my family. But I still do my best to reach out also, and to have the best impact I can. I think that’s really all we can do; always be mindful that what you do impacts the whole world, like the butterfly effect, and do the vest you can in the moment. Make the choice that moves humanity forwards whenever you can, even if it’s only smiling at a homeless person. Try to love ourselves and others, in all our uniqueness and differences. I would recommend a writer to you Ana: TJ Klune. He has so many wonderful books I hesitate to pick one, but I really enjoyed the Tales of Verania series, and the Green Creek Series. And all of them, really. Hugs and love to you and Brian, and the community here.

Anna, maybe you and Brian can adopt in the future when you are more stable. I adopted a child at almost 50 years old and she just turned 18 and is at university. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. Of course, being childless is a perfectly valid lifestyle.

Ana I spent my “fertile” years in relationships with men who didn’t treat me right and at 45 I know I missed my opportunity to be a mother; however, I also know that I will have the opportunity to give life to other pursuits: taking care of animals, creating art, etc. What you do is a real gift. ❤

I think that's the hardest part of "growing up", is realizing that some dreams or plans will never be. But better unrealized dreams then never to have had them. The saddest people are those who have never dreamed. True happiness comes from love of the things that you do have, and you seem to be at that stage. I'm in my 50's and still growing up, many things undone but that's ok.

I think most of our insecurities come from societal dictate I’m almost 42 and not married or don’t have/want children. I’m also Hispanic. I get pressured from my family and from society that expects me to produce off springs. I look 20 and I hate telling people my age but when they find out, the judgement comes. I hate to tell people my age not because of what I look like. Because of the judgement I will get from people. However, I’m striving to not give a 💩 about what people think of me. It’s my life and why should I live mentally poorly just because I let people’s opinions of me affect me. I’m very worthy! And so is everyone else. You’re not alone Anita. People just suck

@@anagoldberg I have learnt that a lot of judgement comes from the following place: nothing makes people angrier than seeing others doing/having/allowing themselves the things they never allowed themselves to do/have, or they were never allowed to do have. And the anger gets even bigger when they see a behaviour or choice in you that they had to murder in themselves.

I am also Hispanic. I am 32 years old but look 20. When I say "32" they immediately ask if i have children or a husband. It stings when that's all that matters to many people. But even though we don't "fit", we are still beautiful....likely, more beautiful.....then many that fit the status quo. I'm with you Jenny....worthy, beautiful, and strong.

Hi Ana, that was a lovely and insightful talk. Of the things you mentioned, I too am childless. I've never had any regrets about it, but now, at age 71 and feeling more vulnerable, I worry that no one comes to check in on me every so often. I'm still fully autonomous but at some point I will need help with day to day things. It will mean hiring a stranger to come into my house to cook, clean, whatever. I do not look forward to it. Like you, I cobbled together an income from various jobs - playing music for diners in restaurants, working part time in a computer facility, as a janitor, and for a web design company. And like you, in my 20s and early 30s I worked for prestigious companies climbing the corporate ladder to success. Never again!! Sharing your thoughts and feelings like this gives all your readers the invitation to do the same. It is a wonderful and generous gesture Ana.

I am 60 years old. About 15 years ago my arthritis made a wheelchair necessary. Luckily, I had the mindset to take advantage of many chances to do things like white water rafting, climbing rocks, and when I lived in Japan, I hiked in the mountains almost every weekend. I missed my seasonal walks, when I went on solitary hikes at the change of seasons every year. To be honest, I still miss them, but I have learned the essential skill of eventually finding contentment no matter what life throws in my path. Am I always happy? Nope. I use anti depressants to help me exist in my physically limited life. But I am content, with lots of happy days.

I remember reading a book by a nun years ago who pointed out that the choices we make in life mean other options can't be experienced (at least not at the same time.) For instance, those who are coupled miss the joys of being single but experience the pleasures of coupledom. Somehow that seems pertinent (to me anyway) to what you're saying here. It sounds like you're relaxing into the alternatives life is bringing and valuing those experiences for what they give. Also, your thoughtful content always contributes to my sense of well being. I'm still thinking about your recent video highlighting the value of a simple life over one that requires a sacrifice of such a life in order to make money or achieve professional status. I felt supported in my own decision to live that way and I thank you for that!

Do Vipassana! It fits so much to you. It was the most amazing thing I have ever did in my life and I am saving money to do it again. Do not worry about your meditation skills, that is the whole idea behind a retreat: A Vipassana retreat is a silent retreat, so you do not speak and read for 10 days (or so). And through the silence your thoughts start to whisper and become very "slow", so it is much much easier to "catch" them in mediation. Only in a retreat you can really become masterful and go sooo much deeper than in the loud matrix outside. It also helps you to let go of the children wish. If you experience the white light and start to wake up it really does not matter if you have children or not. To have children is even a lot of Karma that keeps you in the matrix reality and I find it so helpfull that I dont have any :) You are such a buddhist, you will love it and you will handle your mind, you do not need to be afraid of it, I promise!

It is extremely important to live your life according to your heart. I have children, and I’m proud of them, but I don’t feel if I never had children I’d feel less whole. “Reaching socially praised goals” was a perfect way to state the pressure of society. I was a public school teacher but I never felt my position was more valuable than the cashier at the grocery store (or any other job/career). Obviously, since you addressed each topic, you have felt pressured in that area. It makes me sad that you have received that pressure, but I am also so happy you have addressed it. It is vital for people to know they are enough single or married, a parent or child free, a Master’s degree holder or not. You are a precious being just because you are.

Hi Ana, firstly your hair looks lovely, and your scarf and cardigan, beautiful. Thank you for your five. All very important topics. I too did not manage to get a Masters, due to financial and family situations. I like to think of myself as attending the university of life. I have stopped feeling bad about not achieving everything I had set out to do. You and Brian are still young, and I am sure your apartment or house is somewhere out there, if not to buy, then to live in for a long time. Wherever you settle, I know you will make it beautiful. I think the whole world is upside down and inside out right now, and I am hoping that there will be change in my lifetime. Nothing is certain anymore. I, like you, find great comfort and serenity in knitting and cooking and creating things for my home. I am so pleased you manage to speak to your brother and cousin every day, that must make your heart sing. Dear Ana, thank you for this thoughtful sharing as always! As a gregarious introvert who also did not get a master’s degree and now as a middle aged person lives a quiet, but rich life I can deeply relate to your reflections. I sometimes regret that I did not pursue a masters in anthropology because the diversity of human history and culture is so endlessly fascinating, but I love so many things like herbalism, child development, neuroscience, the art of healing in different cultures and traditions into present day permutations, songwriting, working with the elderly - I could never pick just one topic because it then feels a bit suffocating if that makes sense. It is a gift to be able to pursue your interest in art and literature and philosophy and mediation on your own or through all the many free or affordable resources for learning available through libraries and the internet. Never has so much knowledge been accessible to so many! Even university lectures from Harvard and Oxford are free on the internet - for a true lifelong learner the opportunities are endless. ( of course the paper certificates can generate more economic opportunities and more access to the intellectual peer communities) But we really are in unprecedented times for self motivated learners of all kinds! As someone who has also closely followed and often participated in spiritual and wellness community activities, I’ve often noticed how privileged one has to be in order to participate in wellness retreats, take workshops, meditation classes etc. oftentimes, the people most in need of healing and wellness are deprived of access to this resources. On the other hand, when I have been able to attend such retreats and groups, I’m often struck that most attendees have trouble then integrating the practices with their real lives and so the struggle continues! What you are doing is the essence of any real spiritual practice - daily, non glamorous and simple devotion. It’s easy to cultivate peaceful feelings on a mountaintop retreat or a seaside location, but we all have to go home and that’s where the “ rubber meets the road” so to speak. A great book from a while back talking about this fundamental truth is Jack Kornfeld’s “After the Ecstasy, the Laundry”. Also, in regards to health and healing, I’d like to share a book by a woman who lives not too far from me in Northern California named Ellen Meredith “The Language Your Body Speaks” It may be a bit out there for some, but I absolutely love her grounded and humane approach to health and healing as akin to learning a unique language . She offers loads of fun, artistic and playful suggestions that open up whole new pathways of healing. With your interests and gifts, I can see you resonating with her work. Thank you for being such an authentic and compassionate voice here on RU-vid! This community reminds me that the world is full of wonderfully real and heart centered people who envision more beautiful human communities. ✨🧡

Ana, I have been to many Vipassana retreats and found them very valuable, but I have no difficulty with silence, in fact I like it. I think Serbia has a centre somewhere? The good thing is that you only pay what you can afford and it is a private decision, so I think you can afford it. Your fears about what it might bring up are valid though, sometimes people struggle. I will be 70 in March and while I am fit and healthy and still being creative there are things that I know I will never do, or never do again. Travel abroad is one of them and I am trying to be OK with that. Fortunately I have a good memory for past travels and can visit in my mind any time I wish.

I really appreciate this thought provoking topic Ana! I'm 58 (very close to 59 now) and I was just thinking along these lines this a few days ago. Some of the things I used to keep pretty strong in my heart as goals are starting to shift and fade a little bit ... not in a sad way really ... just realizations I think that in some cases I no longer want the same things and in other areas - the goal or idea seems less likely. As you were talking about home ownership ... I thought about how hard it must be for people in Russia who do own homes and property to just leave it. And I wonder sometimes if that material tie may actually cause more heartache for some people right now. At some future time, people may be reunited with their homes and extended families ... it just leaves a lot of unknowns and I think for me if I had to leave my home that I've paid for for so many years and lived in ... even if it was for my very survival ... well I admit it would probably be very hard for me ... not so much the replaceable portable property ... but the yard, trees, and location, structure even ... and that feeling of knowing where home is. It's a lot to think about. So many people are on the move within countries and internationally too right now. I look at my surroundings and I try to imagine how I'd separate myself from here and that's when I realize I don't truly know what it feels like to be a person without a country ... even temporarily. But home is where we find ourselves. I discovered that when I took care of my Dad at his home when he had his cancer journey. I was homesick for my own home, animals and people but I made a temporary life and had joy and all of the alive experiences even far away and within the very different environment at Dad's. So much to think about as always your videos provide for soulful deep reflection!!! Thank you Ana!

Anna, it is so wonderful & amazing to know that there's someone out there, all the way from Siberia while I'm from NL, who is so like me. Isn't the internet a wonderful thing? I am still struggling with feelings of "failure" regarding not being able to "fill society's bingo card", but I feel the tide is slowly turning inside me, and I'm starting to be quite proud of who I am and what I've overcome, and all the mad adventures I've had. Thank you so much for this timely video (but really, all your videos are timely to my life ;-) On a more shallow note: I love the color & cut of your cardigan (blouse?), especially in combination with the scarf. Those colors are perfect for you 🙂

I have a BA in History and like you I had barriers like the logistics of being in a program that worked for me, finances and personal circumstances that prevented me from moving forward. I have taken on self-made projects though with a curriculum I create. In a way it's much better because I can study what I want, I can write about it and best of all no TESTS! I also liked your way of working with going on a spiritual retreat in your own way. It is true that we can find those bits of meditation in the simple everyday things of life. As a fellow HSP, I love your channel!!! It is so important after leaving an exhausting career , to realize the simple life I have now chosen, has value. The depth of my inner growth since "retiring"has been exponential. But, since I left my career before having enough to retire in the way most Americans live, the guilt about living on a meager amount of money, haunts me. I think I should be trying to make money, but my inner voice, says, no , you are done with that. I see the way I live now, as disavowing consumerism...which is essential if this planet is to survive. I must learn to stop using gasoline now as it is too expensive and my inner voice, says, yes this is good, to live simple. I am happier knowing I am not depleting the earths resources. HSPs like you, are visionary....never forget your value is huge!

My dad had me in his forties too. And he is 100 in a few weeks. And quite healthy too . Still telling me what to do. So don't let age stop you. I think adopting older sibling would be wonderful. Cast a stone in the lake and the ripples spread out. The stone remains unaware of the ripples. That might be you at this moment, because your choice to live a “simple life” is sending an impact out across the world. I have been struggling with whether or not I can continue my homeless outreach as I struggling to hold onto my own housing. I haven’t quite been able to allow myself to quit but worry that I am not doing enough this year. My mom just reminded me that it’s not what we do or how many people know us, but how we touch the lives we pass through. A man in a documentary she watched told a story about how he was going to McDonalds for a lay meal before killing himself, after years of being treated cruelly by strangers and those close to him. For some reason, the woman ahead of him prepaid for his meal. That small act gave him hope and he remains on this planet today and continues to pay forward his gratefulness. That makes me cry every time I think of it. So, just know your life isn’t small and doing what works for you is encouraging to others. I am 45 and without children and on occasion I regret it, but most of the time I know I made the right choices and don’t regret that it never happened, because it has allowed me the time to love, connect and nurture people (also plants and animals) whom are already here. The big things I wanted to do and probably will not because of time, money and the current state of the world are to visit Thailand, Russia, Morocco and revisit certain European countries I fell in love with. I also wanted to own a food truck and travel across the US, preparing vegetarian foods for people. I still hold out hope of seeing more of my country and photographing all the beautiful things, as well as sharing some of my father’s vegetarian recipes. I do moving meditation when I can’t sit still. Which happens a lot even though I grew up meditating and doing yoga. So, when able, I put in my ear pods and dance or walk in the forest, which is my happy place. Going to check out the language program, thanks! I have been learning French, Spanish, Navajo and Russian for a year, now. Would be great to connect with others and get accent assistance.

Except if you look at history there was no good time to have a child, before 1920 and antibiotics, childbirth was a serious risk to a woman's health and infant mortality was much greater than now 1930s great depression 1940s WWII, 19 50's economic post war depression 1960s cold war everyone scared there going to be WWII 1970S another economic downturn 1980s well maybe ok in USA or western Europe but certainly not elsewhere 1990s war in parts of Eastern Europe 2000 gulf wars. There have been wars and threatening of wars since the beginning of history, natural disasters and far far worse pandemics than covid and yet people still had and are having children. I do not think the situation today awful though it is in Ukraine is worse than situations in North Korea Syria , historically in Rwanda etc etc this is not to excuse it but to rationally say today is not the worst time in history to be born, it is on average better than usual infant mortality is down by a drastic amount educationally opportunities are generally much better ( though for girls especially in Afghanistan , it is worse) more children are in school than at any time previously and less children under 10 are forced to work

@@sarahmacrae8277 Yes, but making babies now, when we have huge war in Europe around the corner, would be totally irresponsible.

I don’t want any biological children. I can’t imagine bringing someone into this world. There are a lot of problems in the world (wars, pandemics and capitalism itself as well as climate change and it’s disastrous effects) and a lot of struggle in life and I don’t want to impose that on anyone. In fact I am shocked that so many people have kids when the world is like this! After we’ll buy a house we will look into adoption and giving kids that need a home, a loving home, but I’d never bring someone here.

languages, haha, what you learn as a bored child paying no attention sticks, what you learn as a forty year old who works hard vanishes when you close the book

I too would have loved to own my own house. By the way I am also improving my high-school German at the moment. I like "Easy German" here on RU-vid for conversational German. And they are fun too, and teach about German culture.
