What a way to celebrate the 54th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moonwalk (not Michael Jackson's version).

The video guy controlling PTZ sat in front row on far end where Booster would sit. This seat became empty as Booster was occupied only during Saturn V launch. Rest of MOCR crew called this guy "Captain Video." I imagine several geologists in a backroom were constantly saying "go here, go there, focus on that" etc. etc. It must have felt quite amazing as merely 10 years before there was no video from space during Mercury flights.

CAPCOM Joe Alan was a great guy. He didn’t get to fly until the shuttle era in the early 1980s.

@@MrJacMac1968 , Wikipeadia has a blank spot between his CAPCOM duties on Apollo 15, and his activities in the mid-1970s. Nothing about assignment from the late aborted Apollo missions. However, I suppose those astronauts would later turn up on Skylab. In 1981, Joe was CAPCOM for STS-1, where-in John Young asked, “You want us to taxi her up to the hanger, Joe?” In

@@MrJacMac1968, it looks like the Apollo 18 astronauts were dispersed. One was a flown Apollo 12 astronaut, one would go on to Apollo 17, one to Apollo/Soyuz and early Space Shuttle. The Apollo 19 crew (mostly) went on the Skylab 3, while the Apollo 20 crew (mostly) went on to Skylab 2.

Maybe I'm alone on this one, but I think I prefer the original footage and all its flaws to the remaster.

It's quite a bit improved from the original video. You really have to watch the original first to get a feel for the improvement.

During the moonwalk, Jim Irwin developed heart problems to which it concerned mission control because of the possibility of Irwin suffering a heart attack. They deduced that it was because of the lack of potassium in the body. So that with Apollo 16 and Apollo 17 the moonwalkers had to drink potassium rich fluids (not discussing John Young tirades nor his what he thought of it due to profanity) to keep their hearts from having problems during the moonwalks. This is going to be an issue on the Artemis program because if an astronaut suffers a heart attack, there are no hospitals nearby, nor is calling 911 going to be of any help.

Why are you not using the original 1971 color videotapes? The film kinescopes are a far inferior source for you to be using.

The guy controlling the (fixed ptz) camera did an awful job. Clearly a tech and not a video person. They didn't know how to compose a useful shot that didn't include empty space. Sigh.

I don't think much planning went into that, live video from the moon was a goal for some but not a requirement for the program. There were some including astronauts that felt live video during Apollo 11 would add too much workload to an already ambitious flight. They probably wanted someone already cleared to enter MOCR.
