On December 24, 1968, humans saw the phenomenon known as "Earthrise" with their own eyes for the first time. The crew of Apollo 8; Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, And Bill Anders, saw and took color photographs of the Earth rising above the lunar horizon in a series of images that captured the spirit of the Apollo program, and their 10 orbits around the Moon paved the way for the "Giant Leap" 6 months later.

This to me will always be one of the greatest moments in spaceflight.

I was a 14 years old boy in the Netherlands who received the autographs from the Apollo 8 crew. Still now I am a great fan from the Apollo Missions. Thanks to the Apollo programme I became very interested in science and cosmology. Thank you Nasa, thank you Jim Lovell, William Anders and Frank Borman. I will never forget you and this great Christmas moonmission. Ed

I was lucky enough to meet Jim Lovell, amazing lovely man. I got the first black and white photo signed by him , it reads "first earthrise Christmas 1968".

It’s so cool to see that crazy blue marble that we call home from so far away. Space is the future.

I remember our local Datsun dealership was giving away pretty large lithographs of that shot. I had it hanging on the wall in my bedroom

If I was an astronaut, I'd end every relationship with "Look, I just need space".

I love how Borman looks identical to Anders…. Kidding. This is phenomenal. Giving Lovell’s POV as if we were there 53 years ago. Please be advised, there is a Santa Claus

I have met all 3 of these men. I also have eaten at the Lovel's family restaurant. This mission changed history in more than one way. First, this crew was the ONLY Apollo crew that never suffered through a divorce either before or after the flights. Also because Nasa swapped missions involving Apollo 8 and 9 this made Neil Armstrong's mission the first "G" mission. Had Jim McDivitt's mission stayed Apollo 8 Pete Conrad would have commanded the first "G" mission. This was basically because Deke Slayton kept the primary crews and the backup crews synced. Also, Jim Lovel was the ONLY man that made the trip twice that did not walk on the surface of the moon. I also think that iconic Earthrise photo still has debate on who actually snapped it.

I've seen very brief clips of the actual video but had no idea of how it all happened, there's so much more to it than the clip. Thanks for putting this together with the audio. Must have been quite the job figuring out the angles of what was happening in the capsule.

You can really hear how surprised they are by this sight, and how Jim Lovell is doing all he can for them to capture it ("hey calm down, Lovell!"). By the way, it may seem like Lovell is the one who took it from the audio, but it was actually William Anders (he's the one noticing it first). Incredible moment, and great job modeling it!

Very well done! I had the privilege of meeting Frank Borman a few years back and listening to him talk about this moment. I love the way you have represented it. Great work!

“And for all people on the earth the crew of Apollo 8 have a message for you… In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. And the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning- the first day. And God said, “ Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water.” So God, made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. God called the expanse “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning- the second day. And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathering waters he called “seas,” And God saw that it was good. And from the crew of Apollo 8 we close with good night, good luck, a merry Christmas and God bless all of you, all of you on the good Earth.”
