Greek Mythology: Apollo and Hyacinth - A Story about Jealousy
#GreekMythology #Mythology #SeeUinHistory #History #MythologyExplained
wiki: Hyacinth is a divine hero from Greek mythology. His cult at Amyclae southwest of Sparta dates from the Mycenaean era. A temenos or sanctuary grew up around what was alleged to be his burial mound, which was located in the Classical period at the feet of Apollo's statue. The literary myths serve to link him to local cults, and to identify him with Apollo.

Time and time again Apollo was so unlucky in love :( Then again, he was symbolic of the sun and light so perhaps it may have meant to symbolize that he (as the sun) could or should not devote himself to just one being. Imagine if the sun just shined for 1 person. That person would die and so would we from lack of light.

I read somewhere that it could be because Apollo was too perfect. To make him so unlucky in love was a way to balance things. To show you cannot have everything.

@@joaniedallaire4352 That's what I was thinking. He's always described as a great beauty and talented in many things. Sometimes that's enough, sometimes it's not. As I recall, Aphrodite's greatest lover was Ares, who is bloodlust incarnate. Perhaps there's some similarly there.

Ok. So there's Um... 1.) Persephone but Demeter doesn't see Apollo as son in law material. Plus, Hades already got to her. 2.) Then there's Adonis but Aphrodite and Persephone are at tug-o-war for the most beautiful boy. 3.) Also there's Daphne, but was foiled chase when she begged some god/dess to save her. Seemed that her prayers were heard. She turned into a plant while in Apollo's grasp abducting her. That plant, my friends, we now know as Laurel tree. 4.) .... And then there's Hyacinth. (Whew!) What fascinates me though, is Apollo being 'double-edge' if y'know what I mean. (wink... wink...)

I don't think he was 100% gay. Remember the Cassandra affair & what came out of it? Plus he did also have a crush on a female flower nymph which also came to nothing. Apollo had the looks but was also considered to be a loser or a complete bore regarding matters of the heart.

Ironically, what are known today as modern day hyacinths aren’t actually the hyacinth in the myth. It’s myth is actually believed to be an iris or a larkspur. But thank you for telling this myth, it’s one of my favorites. Poor hyacinth. Apollo’s only true love.

@Dishani Mendis well, I don’t count daphne as true love because it was forced in a way because Apollo mocked Eros archery skills claiming he’d never reach the skill Apollo himself. Therefore Eros took revenge on him by forcing unrequited love shooting him with a love arrow while shooting Daphne with a lead arrow (hate arrow). I consider true love to be when both sides love each other. Hyacinth was the other lover who didn’t take advantage of Apollo’s god power (Aka Cassandra) or cheat on him (Aka Cronus) or run away repulsed by him (Aka Obviously Daphne and countless others). Hyacinth is the only one he cried for it even says in the mythological texts, Theoi, that he “feels sorrow for the death of his love,” Hermès replies “Oh do you ache for that Daphne again,” he replied, no “I grieve for my beloved, Hyacinth the son of Oibolos,” This shows that hyacinth in a way replaced in a way, probably because he’s the only beloved he has who retuned the love.

@@itsmemaiselfandi7600 I also think that Hyacinthus was Apollo's greatest love (come on! That's so obvious). But I would just like to correct one thing: you mentioned Cronus as a female lover who cheated on Apollo; wouldn't it be Coronis?

@@itsmemaiselfandi7600 the myth of daphne in which she turns to laurel is a etiological myth meaning it explains the origin of laurel because Daphne = laurel . in ancient greece laurel was sacred to apollon and as a ritual was offered to him so to explain why such a ritual ( offering laurel to Apollo) is practised they created the myth of daphne . ritual is independent of the myth meaning ritual precedes myth secondly coronis didn't cheat as Apollophanes of arcadia , a scholar went to Delphi ( sacred place of Apollo) to ask about the birth of asklepius (child of apollo and coronis) the pythia *priestesses of Apollo* through whom apollo speaks to mortals said : O Asklepios, born to bestow great joy upon mortals, pledge of the mutual love I enjoyed with Phlegyas' daughter, lovely Koronis, who bare thee in rugged land Epidauros.’ (these are the words of apollo himself) besides cassandra was granted the power of prophecy by apollon indirectly . If you do some background research on cassandra you'll find out that cypria is where cassandra is *first* mentioned it is stated that one night cassandra was left in the temple of apollo where two snakes licked her ears giving her the vision of future *but* Apollo didn't curse her . the story of Cassandra being cursed was written by a tragedy writer named aeschyles who was infamous for painting woman mad and weak and Apollo has many lovers whom he loves dearly Apollo arranged hyacinthia , a festival that honoured hyacinth .

Something else to note about Hyacinthus is that he was once a pre-Hellenic god with a role similar to Persephone, a nature deity associated with the underworld.
