Appalachia; A History of Planned Poverty

"Tell It to the Banjo" is a backwoods bluegrass banjo hymn composed by Angel Jose Ruiz Perez, which provides the soundscape for this video about rural poverty in Appalachia.
The chronic poverty of Appalachia is the outcome of economic domination and racism. In the 1930s, southern politicians prevented farm workers and domestic servants from qualifying for Social Security because they knew that the small Social Security check would support families and would change the labor market in the South. In the early days of coal mining, coal operators prevented workers from unionizing and demanding fair wages. In the face of bitter competition among the coal companies, operators controlled everything about workers' lives to keep their labor costs down. By preventing education and community participation the operators forced workers into submission. President Lyndon B. Johnsons War on Poverty instituted national legislation, but the dynamics of exploitation in Appalachia prevented distribution of its opportunities and benefits. To this day, impoverishment in Appalachia persists.

I'm from E. TN and while we didn't have a lot, we were never as bad off as these folks. This story has always, and will always, break my heart. The people of Appalachia have existed, and still do, on almost nothing and now we have to wear the tag of "ignorant hillbilly." I have never met any snooty anybody who still gives us that label with enough smarts to last more than 2 hours having to live with what ignorant hillbillies have been given. I am a proud ignorant hillbilly with a lot of smarts.

Daddy worked in the coal mines back from the forties to early sixties. My Mom had a little tiny store but they had to compete with the company store , so they had to offer people credit. The problem was most couldn't pay their bills when the time came. Mom had to close the store and when they closed it, they had crates full of credit tabs. A lawyer heard about it and offered to collect the money for a third. Daddy said no these people were all friends and he would never do that. We moved to Northern Va in the sixties where Daddy found a job that paid triple what the mines paid him. He always missed being a coal miner though even if it was hard and dangerous work back then with little pay. I'll always remember living in the mountains because it's where i grew up. I am an old man now, but never will forget my friends i grew up with, and the beautiful mountains i came from. Thank you for this video. It brough back memories.

I sprouted from these roots.... and it is not an easy thing to face understanding these things were intentional acts on the part of greedy individuals with seemingly no other motives... But great courage and unbreakable hearts with a love to take what was once was intended to destroy and use it to create a world where these things have no place to grow... they may sprout but they won't ever thrive as they have in our past... proud to call these my family ties and know I have them to thank for who I am today....

When the system fails these will be the survivors. Clinging to their faith, family and guns; not really caring what the rest the world thinks of them. I have not been back there in years but you used to see a lot of poor people who would not ask the government for help. They would ask family and the church if the children were hungry but not the government.

Robert Moore Pride and private charity go hundreds of times farther than a gubmint handout. In this part of the US, people look out for each other. Let the developed world keep their stereotypes while the hillfolk keep on keepin on. Being rich doesn't equate to monetary value. "Shoulda been a doctor, rich as I be".

We owe much of our freedom to the folks like those pictured here. The miners fought a battle with owners, men died for the right to dig themselves out of poverty. We tend to focus on the military, but much of the fight for freedom happened within our own country, fought by nobodys with no monument over their graves, gone and forgotten. God bless the brothers and sisters who fought the good fight over oppression by coporations. Let's not forget them, they are heros too.

great book about the people of Appalachia is "Christy" by Catherine Marshall, historic fiction on the folks of the early 20the century in Appalachia. The story is about the author's mother, who taught school in the mountains, and delves into the many facets of the lives of the folks. The people of the range now known as the Smoky Mountains (southern part of the Appalachians) were fiercely independent, self-sustaining, far from gov't control, and didn't trust outsiders.

My family is from SW VA. My dad and Granddad taught the dangers of owing money. Paid cash for everything until I got married at age 30. Then the debts began. Finally now at 69 will pay off mortgage next week! Any young folks out there - pay cash for used cars. Car payments will keep you in debt. If you must borrow $, borrow only for things that will increase in value!

My dad and his whole immediate family left the mountains and moved south. Granpa was a coal miner, and died young so dad became the family patriarch and got a good job with the railroad , so he avoided the mines and got his mom and siblings out of poverty. He always wanted to move back “home” to the mountains when he retired , but he never made it.

It goes back a long ways. I've always said that LBJ crippled more people than polio. I was born in E Ky. There was no work at the time. My dad, his brother, and his 2 sisters left and came to the Cin.Oh area and on to N KY. All 4 got jobs with the General Electric Company and all 4 retired from there. One can not stay where there's no jobs. Hope I didn't hurt anyone's feelings.

Think about this I don't think most of in the US can see much difference no matter who is president or which party is in power! I don't care if you are from Detroit, Appalachia or Washington State. The truth is except for the privileged few at the top most workers are exploited and receive next to nothing for their efforts. The majority will only dream about the American dream. We the workers have steadily lost earning power since the 70's. Working in a union shop helps but they hardly exist now

@huckstered not everyone is fixated on certain unfortunate parts of the south and coal people. research was helpful to me as 3 things i know about coal are: 1. in coal miners daughter loretta lynn leaves coal country and becomes a millionaire. 2. coal is a deliciously cheap energy source. 3. the chicago museum of science and industry has a great coal mine exhibition. and fyi.. there are no mannequins standing around that mine dressed up like poor hillbillies.
@huckstered
@huckstered 14 лет назад
@DaperDan8 This does not address the highly exploitative methods of how working people are treated in the south.. Also- Highest rates of children without health insurance, lowest per child expenditures for education, Lowest rates of per capita income in the country- these are the stories of the south and the wealthiest country on earth. Here , where 1% own 95% of wealth and pay a 30% income tax rate. You need more research yet. Irrelevant? Of course. I don't need to research.

@GeorgeBonez "I hate people that rewrite history just to push their lib-agendas." But who wrote the history? Probably people with money and power, and that's going to effect what's included and what's left out. All history is constructed. It is not pure truth or fact, that cannot be contested. It's a narrative created by people, and their perspective WILL show, liberal or not. Looking at marginalized histories is important. I don't know much about this situation but I wanted to make that point.

Freedom limited by those who control the education of the miner's children. Individual responsibility works fine at the family level but limited economic choices tempers the situation. Liberty to leave the mines and starve. Your views would not only be correct but also noble IF the laborer were not constrained by a predicament controlled by others. You are correct that this is a part of human nature. The nature of SOME humans. not all. Not that simple on either side of the issue.
