Excellent stories Jared! All of them sad and unfortunate proof of how easy it was to die back then. That's why we were taught to listen to and respect our Grandparents because they had gotten so much farther than many folks that they had known! I feel for the men left behind. I too am the last of my family. I will pray for these folks tonight. Know that in sharing their stories, you keep them alive in our hearts for many more years to come! Y'all take care! Thank you for these stories. After the lock down (caused by Covid), I don't mind being alone anymore. Which is good; because, most young people don't like old people like me. Daddy told me a story that took place during the Great Depression. There lived an old couple who lived in a holler up Dry Creek. They would walk to town to trade what they had for things they could not grow or make themselves. They were very poor, as most people were during the Depression. One year there was very deep snow that stayed on, because it was very cold; and that Winter was a long one. When Spring came, and the weather started getting better, someone noticed that the old couple had not come to town. People got to worrying about them. Someone decided to go find their cabin and see if they were alright. It took a while to find the shack. There was no food, wood, coal, or anything or value left in the cabin. The old couple were found in a bed (that looked more like an old hog trough) in the shack that was made out of old boards, leaves, hay, and rags. Both of them had been long dead. The doctor who examined what was left of them said it would be hard to tell if they starved or froze to death.

You always make me smile. My grandfather told me these old stories. Brings him back to life for me.

David Greer lived in a tiny cave at first. Been there many times. I lived on top of bald mountain. I found some of his things metal detecting.

The mountains were full of old bachelors and old maids, people for whatever reasons chose to live alone. Having to deal with humanity for the past 63 years, I can understand why they do. You can't hear the voices of the mountains when all the noises of people are around you, and frankly I'd rather hear the mountains these days.

Sounds like J.D. Hatmaker from Jefferson County Tennessee, lived part of His life in a Cave in Mill Springs, New Market Tennessee

I grew up with all brothers and all uncle's so I grew up hunting and fishing. But I never went Rattlesnake hunting with them. Every April is when you hunt them. I'm terrified of Snakes and Spiders but I can handle anything else! Lol. So I grew up eating all animals and fish that we hunted and fished for. But my favorite was the Fried Rattlesnake Meat! Serve it over some Rice with Homemade Gravy and some Homemade Biscuits! And Homeade Blueberry or Blackberry Cobbler for Dessert!!! A Meal like that will Make Ya Wanna Slap Your Brother for it!!! It's Just That Darn GOOOOD!! Lol. 🤤

I worked on the parkway here in Bedford Va as a tractor mower operator and in the fall after the leaves fell I would see old rock chimneys sticking up back true the trees and I would get off my tractor and walk back and look but there were no signs of wood . So I ask few of the old guys that worked back for the CC camp that build the parkway about it and they said that the people would move out when they were told and the would have to move all there belongings out and burn the house and still you would go by and see a cook stove setting there in the woods with woman 31:41 cooking a meal on it there were a lot of old chimney’s scattered about those mountains.My wife was born in a log home in those mountains and lived there until I came along and married her .

I really liked the story,don't know of all my family tree bones landed at isle of weight Virginia 1611 and moving along, my Daddy's mom my grandma told me she me about my family she tolt school about 1900 or so was registered first pioneer school teacher polk county fla with ejacation,that I'm related to Daniel Boone,Robert e Lee and Lee, president hays,and great great grama Boone was a mcoy,aka mcrory,and got some apache Indian in the tree .have a good day all I'm a fla.swamp boy 61 years young I sifer imite should find a little spring hole by a cave too finish my days.
