I know it's been a while, but videos like this never get old. Thanks so much for documenting! Planning my own adventure this year. Interestingly enough, I just finished Bill Irwin's book Blind Courage, story of the first Blind thru-hiker to complete the AT, with his dog Orient. It was an incredible read. So, it was extra neat to see you bump into Disciple. Thanks again man!!

I'm actually from Pembroke VA and if you ever go back to do the triple, I highly recommend that you take a few hours to check out The Cascades. It's only a 4ish mile loop but it leads to a 66' waterfall and it is BEAUTIFUL. It's about an hour from Catawba. www.virginia.org/listings/OutdoorsAndSports/CascadesNationalRecreationTrail/

Cool! I’m assuming this video came up for me because I just uploaded my triple crown videos. Just did this hike last week. Wish I’d seen your video first! I parked at Daleville and got shuttles down to Dragons Tooth to hike north. So cool you got to meet Not By Sight and Jays on the Trail. Followed them both last year. I met only a few thru hikers since it was later in the summer and I was walking northbound. All the best, happy hiking!!

Awesome vid Frozen-- looks like an amazing time! My wife and I just got back from Vermont last weekend (mem day) hiking the first 40 miles of the Long Trail/AT. We met around a dozen through hikers over our 4 day trip. They started late February/early March in Georgia and were already in Vermont.. averaging 20-30 miles a day. We had 2 solid days of heavy rain, so we didn't get much in the way of views at overlooks. Talking to the thru-hikers was definitely one of the highlights of my trip-- have the upmost respect for those guys-- the AT is no joke. One of these days you seriously have to go experience the Long Trail. Would love to see you thru-hike that - 272 miles. Thanks again for sharing this trip- I learn something new every time I watch!
@FrozensAdventures
@FrozensAdventures 7 лет назад
It is on the long list of trips to do. I'll start with the Superior Hiking Trail and work my way up in miles. Not bragging at all but after months of hiking every day I'd probably be one of those people doing 20-30 miles each day. I'd want to take the least time off work as I can. Were any of those thru hikers assisted? Meaning they had someone following them with resupply?
@stowe18
@stowe18 7 лет назад
Haha! I know you would be! I was thinking about you while out there about how many miles you'd be doing, we averaged 10 a day (7, 13, 8 and 12). We met ONE thru that was what they call "slack packing" because of how bad the conditions were-(he was the only SBer we met) and another thru was "blue blazin" to go re-supply in town and avoid an especially muddy section of the trail that we did. But we didn't run into anyone that had someone actually following them with their backpack, just one that had someone else driving it to another road crossing. The thru's that we met that were avg'ing 20-30 were only doing 12-15 on the section we were because of how bad the mud was, and the trail was the most technical I've ever done. Each step was carefully placed.. I wound up breaking a trek pole on day one. Seriously underestimated how difficult it was going to be, but my motivation was a brewery pub in Bennington that kept me going one foot in front of the other. My IT band is still recovering from that last day -- I was a peg leg just like meerkat on your last LHHT trip.. luckily my wife is a physical therapist and has been working on me- but it's still in pain!

You mentioned hiking the AT when you retire. I suggest not waiting unless your are supremely happy at your current job. I've been at my we'll paying great benefits job since 1999. I'm miserable. I've told my wife I'm quiting in 2021 to hike the PCT. She's cool with it! Life is short man. Hike the AT and find a new job when you get done. Or better yet find a gal who wants to live a vagabond lifestyle and get all hippy and happy on us. Think Darwin on the Trail. That dude looks super happy. Anyway... another great video. Thanks for bringing us along. PS I'm only 30 minutes into the video and I've wanted to comment about 5 times. All in good ways. I truly enjoy your content. Thanks man.

We just did that hike! That downhill 3 miles from Tinker cliffs on Andy Layne Trail was really somethin' (We had parked our car down there and got a ride to our start a few miles south of Dragon's Tooth). My knee was already killing me from doing almost 11 miles from four Pines hostel to McAfee Knob the day before, and down from Dragon's tooth the day before that, so that 3 miles of downhill was not my favorite although it was supremely beautiful! It really sucks though that you ended up having to go six miles out of your way to get back to the AT. Great video, though! It was good to see someone else's perspective of this hike... Our 11 year old daughter came with us, I was so proud of her for doing an almost Eleven Mile day on her first backpacking trip! By the way, they've painted over the yellow blazes on The Andy Layne Trail now and it's a blue-blazed trail, so no one who's trying to follow the white blazes will mistake the pale yellow for white anymore. I'll bet that's happened to a bunch of people.

Great video. The yellow trail you "bumped" into earlier appears to have blazes that are 2x6" dimensions...a blaze that is usually reserved for the AT, especially in the east coast and trails that close to each other. Compounding the problem is that other blaze is light yellow which can look white at first glance in the sun. Not a lot of thought went into marking that yellow trail.

There have been plenty of advice to hike before retiring, and I get that. My advice would be, watch for any windows/doors to open up to anything you want, and then GO FOR IT. I was lucky enough to see a partial opening and took it in 2009 when I hiked the AT. If it is something you want, watch and listen through life and go for it. The windows and doors are not always super obvious and in your face, sometimes it is just a crack with dull light, watch and listen carefully. This may apply to more than just hiking. Edit: When I went through this area, McAfee Knob was pouring rain and no view, but later that day when I was at Tinker Cliffs, the sky started opening for the view. I had to take a nice long break up there.

I would have loved to hear some of those stories....I think a missed opportunity for an interesting video, still a good video as always but maybe next time you can show some of the people you meet and chat up on the trail.

I don't like to get too up close and personal with people I meet on the trail. Reason being is I don't want to take them out of their element and throw social media at them.

that's fair and I admire your ethics, I can imagine the line of making a video and not encroaching on anyone is a fine line to walk.

Nice Video. I moved to Roanoke back in 2013, I’ve hiked in this area a lot. You should Thru Hike, I did it back in 2010 Maine to Gergia, you won’t regret it.

My aversion to brussel sprouts is legendary. I've tried them every which way known and still have yet to find a way that I find palatable. I've never thought of hiking with them, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that there is no way they'd taste like a steak (or whatever the vegan equivalent is that I'd eat.) 😲 I'm glad you enjoy hiking in the Old Dominion. I love my State and I think I've hiked about every trail in it, including a State through hike of the AT (back in the '92 when packs weighed a ton more by today's standards.)

+Adventures of Frostbeard i emailed bd about a fix since it was out of warranty. They said to use a few drops of epoxy. However the issue fixed itself for now. But if it happens again I will do the epoxy fix.

The Appalachians in western VA are beautiful. One of the few places in the mountain range that actually look like mountains and not over sized hills haha.
@troycooper7180
@troycooper7180 Год назад
Us locals call that mountain as the natives did who named it "Catawba" and it is pronounced like "CuhTawbah" without any real emphasis on the "W". Also Mc Afee's Knob is not pronounced as Macahfees (LOL), it is just like the anti-virus guy John McAfee, pronounced MacAfees. Ha, Pennsylvania dude! I live very close to Dragon's Tooth (which you spoke perfectly BTW! LOL), and around here we do little day hikes up to McAfee's Knob and to the top of the tooth at Dragon's Tooth. When I was young there was no steel stepping bars or luxuries like that, but I sure do like those now that I'm older! Glad you enjoyed our countryside!

Awesome video! I am looking at doing a hike to Mcafee knob and Tinker cliffs in the next few weeks. I'm not in great shape and was wondering if I could do a loop to Tinker and back in 2 days? Also, how is the water situation in that area?
@FrozensAdventures
@FrozensAdventures 6 лет назад
Water is limited this time of year. There is water in between McAffee and tinker but it's down from a campsite and coming from. Fill up at each source. I don't know your level of fitness for your trip length so use your own judgement if it's safe to do in 2 days.

Ahh in Las Vegas if the trail is more than couple miles you have to carry at least 4L of water, 5 recommended for all day hike, not always you can find a spring in the desert; I got one of my favorite places here called hidden forest where you hike 10 miles out and back, about 5 miles up mountain to a cabin, kind of moderate hike although it is labeled difficult; thing is no water except a little pipe coming from a mountain spring at the end of the hike that runs all winter and through spring but it may be dry at times during summer, now if this is dry, you need about 4 or 5L of water for your hike and makes it difficult to be an overnight; with normally half liter per mile hiked 5L is about right but then the weight gets on the way.

I'm planning to hike this loop in early October and was considering starting at the Andy Lanyne parking lot to knock out the North Mountain section out early. I figured it would be more motivating to save the best views for last and starting there would get the long water carry out of the way. Do you think that would make the trip a little better?
@FrozensAdventures
@FrozensAdventures 6 лет назад
Yes I think that would be fine. I just went back and did the loop again and the north mountain trail is a bit more overgrown than it was in this video, but still not bad. Just a heads up though depending on where you are camping night 1, the section between dragons tooth and McAffee Knob is going to be bit tiring if you do it that way. So just keep that in mind. Not too bad but just a heads up. Remember there is no camping on the AT in this section except at designated spots.
