Nobody wants thin

I've got to be honest I was all against thin laptops too, but I much prefer the form factor of my 16" Intel Macbook Pro than my 16" M1 Macbook Pro. The lack of ports and no Magsafe on the Intel model is a real downgrade though. My Intel i9 model literally melts my knees with just web browsing - but now the M series of chips run a lot cooler and quieter I reckon they could still shave a couple of mm off and not sacrifice too much. Just the illusion of thin would probably be good enough by chamfering the sides - as long as they are still able to get Magsafe, SD card reader, and headphone jack on the side.

Just when I thought Apple had moved away from 'form over function'. Their devices are thin enough, who really cares if a device is 1mm thinner?! For me I want a laptop with ports, I want a SD Card reader, a quiet powerful machine with a great screen, excellent battery life, a proper cooling solution so the system doesn't throttle back it's performance or get loud (especially important as Apple is currently chasing the games market).
@denblaakop

That's stupid, Apple ARE design driven machines. Having as many functions as possible have taken Apple devices from being super high end devices for professionals, to geeky toys for consumers. I really wellcome Ive back, they are hopeless without him. If you want to drown in functions, just go with Windows and Android, that's what they do.

I agree! @@heyaisdabomb for the first part define heavy tasks, performance is obviously always a primary validated goal, so is things like cooling. But if you want a machine that is compatible with everything and has all possible functions and all possible options to customize, then obvious, go with windows or linux machines! Trying to do everything all at once creates a mess! and ... the very idea of Macs, is to use Dieter Rams and Paul Rand (and John Ive's) design principles, where the most important one is: make it as simple as possible but not simpler. That's why the butterfly keyboard Macs never worked, Tim Cook (based on the engineering input and Wozniak) wanted Johny to Innovate. Where his own vision have always been to try to make the existing things better and simpler. It's why the 2012-2015 MacBooks where brilliant, why the 2013-2020 iMacs where the same. And it's why the new Sillicon MacBooks where great as well (basically putting M chips into a 2015 Mackbook form factor). It's also why IOS and Ipad os 18 is HORRIBLE ...

There seems to be a culture war going on inside Apple between the "Air" camp and the "Pro" camp. The Air camp ruthlessly obsessed with "thin-and-light" and willing to compromise performance and functionality to achieve that singular aim, while the Pro camp is more willing to accept the fundamental limitations of physics. This war makes no sense. They HAVE an Air line of products AND a Pro line of products. Let the Air be Air and Pro be Pro and let the customers pick the bundle that matches their particular preferences.
@heyaisdabomb
@heyaisdabomb 3 месяца назад
The problem is there's a lot of users who want the thinness of the air, but want the pro model, cause they want to be able to say they have a top of the line laptop, even though they don't need the performance. It's literally an ego thing, and it's the pinnacle of American consumerism. We have to have top of the line everything, because you will be judged by others if you don't, and everyone cares too much about what others think of them.

I think Apple needs new management. There’s some arguments that can be made for making the iPad lighter because of the way you use it, but it didn’t really need to be any thinner. And the same thing is true for their laptops. At this point making their products thinner is not innovating, it’s just rehashing an idea that Steve Jobs had over a decade ago. It’s saying they don’t have any new ideas. It’s effectively saying “it worked last time.” They need to come up with something new. And that will probably require new management. Because right now I think they’re just taking all the safe bets.

Thinner products: this is great for products that you're wearing and/or holding. So for example Apple Watch and iPad. What about MacBook Pro? You don't wear it and don't hold it. You carry or move it. When using it, it's on a table or on your lap. So that means that it's not so important about how thin it is. It's already thin enough! We don't need a thinner MacBook Pro. Maybe a thinner MacBook Air would be a good thing. But what if they can replace USB-C with something even thinner? The ports are the enemies. So with tinner ports/connectors you can make the MacBook even thinner. The current MBP from late 2021 is good as it is! We just need some yearly chip upgrades, that's it!

I have to go against most comments (I've skimmed) here, for the following reasons: 1. Apple Silicon has it's biggest advantage in thinner, lighter form factor due to efficiency gains. Thinner devices showcase this. 2. Thinner does look sexier in respec to marketing the device 3. Thinner is more portable and ergonomic which is a big help 4. Thinner is probably trending towards the above while battery tech may improve in the interim while they've already got the design ready for that? There could be more reasons eg thinner macs that ensure the iPad remains as iPadOS for comparable specs or else larger machines considerably more powerful and expensive for a clearer pricing tier differentiation? On the iPad I am happy to see thinner device as said future chips and battery will make that no problem i'd estimate. But I would like to see Apple go 2-in-1 category with a more universal OS.

If Apple really thinks they're cutting edge, they better step it up with a 16” MacBook Pro as skinny as the MacBook Air, but doesn’t fizzle out when you actually need it to perform. And a battery that lasts 24 hours? Yeah, right, when pigs fly-let’s see if they can actually pull that off without Pro users having to lug around a power bank the size of a textbook.

100% agree - the Mac Book Pro shouldn't be a compromise, just because of 2 miliimeters less - also bring back a Base-T Gbit maybe 10 Gbit ethernet. Battery life and cooling are way to important on these devices - to give us best performance. Right now with my old intel 16 I have to carry all additional adapters for gigabiot/HDMI/memory cards - total annoying and alway something you could forget ;-) - Balance simplicity with usability is perfect design! - Maybe split the pro line between 14/16 inch or introduce 17+ inch version with non compromise power of mobile Mac computing.

My opinion for what it is worth is; function over form is better than form over function! I had the 16" macbook, the last intel version with only USB-C ports. It was great excepting the fan was constantly noisy and I had to buy a bunch of dongles to get the thing to do what I needed. I now have the M2 macbook 16" and it is fantastic! it has all the function I need and runs quiet even when pushing the CPU and GPU. I know USB-C is the future, but the future isn't fully here yet, plus I prefer a few mm of depth to make sure the system runs cool! Thank you to Apple for making the current generation macbooks, perfect compromise of size, robustness and power with functionality not compromised!

I think that Apple will move to solid-state batteries as one of the first ones in the industry, this allows them to keep the thinness of the system, while maintaining and/or increasing the battery life. More and more systems are also transferring over to USB-C, so I think behind the scene they already have a roadmap laid out.

I have to agree that thinner is not necesarilly better. My 14" M1 Macbook Pro is thicker than my windows laptop but i don't care because it has a great keyboard, gorgeous screen and is nice and fast. I've only had the fans come on a few times, usually when I'm doing something extreme with it. I wouldn't buy something that had been made thinner and lighter just because

Thin and light should be focus on ANY Laptop (and on any Tablet, Desktop, Monitor and even any Keyboard as well). I prefer my old MacBook Pro 15" with TouchBar over the newer ones, just because of its thin and light Design and had never any issue with its ports and connectors. The only problem is the intel CPU, which was never as energy saving, as promised by intel and therefore the cooling system was a bit underpowered. In reality, this Core i7 was never a good Laptop CPU. Jony Ive did the right choices (and if intel has delivered what they have promised, it would be great) and any Apple Laptop after looked like a step back to me, in any case. Not even Apple drops the fantastic and futuristic TouchBar for some old style and useless Function Keys. But also is the whole shape of the former very nimble and clever shaped housing gone (thinner to the edges and sharp edges) and replaced by a Design much more like a cube with slightly rounded edges. Not clever, not nimble, not futuristic. Why in hell? A major step back to me. To make the thinnest products in the Tech World is the right way for Apple and with there own SoC it is not even possible but also necessary to compete against the competition with there thicker, bulkier, heavier but cheaper products.

I just want them to add back the fourth Thunderbolt port and possibly add more. Yes, the ASi MBPs have MagSafe, but I want to carry one type of cable and will likely still charge with USB-C away from home when I upgrade from my Intel 16”. Thinness is cool but I care about Thunderbolt more and ditching the fourth Thunderbolt port is my least favourite thing about ASi MBPs. Legacy ports returning was cool and I may occasionally use them, but I went all in on the Thunderbolt switch and don’t plan on going back. Upgradability would also be cool (SSD and RAM upgrade without desoldering and soldering) but that’s a dream within a dream.

I love the notion that all technology stands still how it was 5 or 10 years ago and so making a choice of thicker vs thinner is exactly the same as it was. Or, hear me out, what if technology progressed in the interim? What if the tradeoffs are not the same? And…what if Apple know more about this than us random folks on RU-vid?

Apple is basically terrible in ergonomics. They're designed-obsessed. No touch screens in laptops? No two-button mouse? And the list goes on .... Apple brands itself as the company that gives the customer what they want .... Well not. Examples enough in recent devices and their hardware component choices.

Apple certainly makes the finest computer products, but for me as a recording professional, performance and silence are Number One issues, followed by internal storage (both RAM and SSD). The thin thing... well. fine. I appreciate low weight, but I would be happier with thicker / heavier if the tradeoff is silence and power. Thanks for your video!

Thinner = better volume/surface ratio (lower temperatures) + less metal (lighter & slightly cheaper case) Unfortunately, thinner also means more fragile. Apple reinforced the new iPad Pro against bending perpendicular to the long axis. Bend it (way) too much perpendicular to the short axis and it will break at the USB port.
@JingSkyJoker

If it not too thick, thinner isn't an advantage but weight can. Thinner can be just look thinner, like wedge clam shell which looks thin at the side, but similar thickness at middle and less space to fit battery and port.

We want lighter yet still sturdy. Not necessarily thinner. Acer Swift Edge 16 is good example. Big, light, still a little flimsy but acceptable. MacBook needs to be better than just that.

By making thinner laptops, you mentioned two main problems. One is the reduced battery capacity, and the other is performance issues due to inefficient cooling. (Let's set aside the issue of bending - anything can bend if you apply enough force, and most of us try to take as much care as possible with these products.) Is it possible that they know something and are developing smaller and more efficient cooling systems to address this? If I wanted to manufacture a thinner laptops, I would also consider whether there is a way to achieve this. Is there a way? What do you think?

I think making the MacBook Air thinner is brilliant, just like the new iPads. Lighter and more comfortable. But the MacBook Pro is fine like this. Nobody buys a pro because they want a light laptop, they get the pro cause they want the baddest machine even if that means a bit more weight for bigger battery and fan.

Personally, I switched from an M1 Max MacBook Pro 14” to an M3 15” MBA, and I’m regretting that memory wise. I’d had to see them go thinner than the MBA and what that does to thermals or performance. I think what we have now is thin enough.

New form factors generate buzz and help to sell more products. I doubt these ultra-slim products would replace the thicker workhorses. It's just another way for Apple to keep flexing its engineering prowess and sell more products. It's a simple strategy and straight from the Job’s playbook.
