This video is 9 years old, still watchable and the content is perfect. It helped me to disassemble my wife's old laptop in order to salvage the display.... This is what I call "8-Bit guy-quality"!
Saved an old MacBook from the trash thanks to you. Replaced the hard drive, upgraded the ram and installed Linux Mint on it. These things had Duo Core 2, 64 bit processors in there. Still a very serviceable computer.
Hi, Thank you very much for the video! I bought a factory mid 2009 MacBook for 90 USD and used your video to upgrade it to 4 RAM and to a hybrid HDD which I had lying around, and reapplied thermal paste. It now runs like a MacBook 2015 :P
impressive video. great angles, clear video quality and proper pronunciation! I just HAD to comment on something... you know you're a pro when you separate the screen bezel with a small flat-head! that screwdriver was millimeters from the screen and you pried the bottom off. Kudos for a great video and a skilled technician!
Using your guide in 2022! I got 3 of these machines in a auction for next to nothing and I'm refurbishing them. They work great on Linux Mint (and even macOS Mojave after a little hackery magic).
Finally fixing an issue with the monitor hinge. Laptop fell and the top would not close straight. Finally saw how to take the laptop apart and readjust the screws. All better now. Thanks!
Backlight... in December 2012, I had the backlight go completely on my mid-2009 MacBook. The screen was just black. Now I know what they had to do to fix it. ;)
Great tutorial. I was able to place an old Macbook screen that had been sitting in my garage for years on my MacBook (that I had not used for years) and WOW it works again. Thanks to your video It was pretty easy. Now, what do I do with a 15-year-old computer?
I just received a 2006 model from my niece, who got it as a gag graduation gift a couple years ago, and stuck it on a shelf as the network ability was lacking.

I haven't watched the vid yet, but I need to replace the hinges, cover, wifi and camera on this MacBook Air late 2008 early 2009. The hinge problem is no longer covered w/Mac or Apple or whatever they call them selves. I bought the parts on ebay and thought I would try it myself before I pay someone, just in case I CAN do it and learn something too. Anyway, I will let you know when my friend gets here and we will watch your vid on his lap top while I work on this MacBook Air & thanks for letting us know right off the bat about the screws. My daughter gave me this MacBook Air and she had changed the hinges herself and had several screws left over and she never put them back in and said it was harder than she thought it was going to be and suggested I take it to someone who knows what they are doing, but I don't have the money for that. Sooo……If I can do it or not I will let you know! BUT THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO PUTS THESE REPAIR VIDS ON YOU TUBE! WE DID FIX OUR CLOTHES DRYER FOR $8 BY WATCHING ONE!
No problem!! All good now! As in, it was purposefully busted up by a mentally unstable person & is NOT repairable. Has to be replaced. But, it was a wonderful laptop that I deeply miss!
@Dell0304 - Those are probably just pressure damage spots. They are more visible on a solid color background. When you get some picture or pattern on the screen our eyes can't differentiate the darker spots. There's nothing you can really do besides replace the LCD panel. If it doesn't bother you too much, just leave it alone. It won't get any worse unless the screen gets a lot of pressure applied somewhere. (even from the back side)
I poured a glass of water into my MacBook I always keep on the floor next to my lazyboy. (I thought it looked thirsty). After pulling power and shop vacuuming I let it set and then used a hairdryer. The next day I powered it and got a color light show.. followed by normal operation! Thought I dodged a bullet. I was wrong. 3 days later I got the chime followed by the "gray screen of death". I've since replaced it with a white late 2008 in mint condition I found for $45. Before I toss it in the trash.. I thought I would pull it open and see whats in there.. Your vid is just what I needed! nice job! good quality video! Guess there will be lots of good parts if nothing else - and this screen and light board is perfect. May need a new MOBO.. we shall see.. :-) - thanks for posting.
I think the standard MacBook and original MacBook Pro were the best macs ever. Back then apple valued their customers. White, Black, Unibody-White, beautiful aluminum, original unibodies, they were beautiful. Now these retinas disgust me. My main computer is my MacBook that's been upgraded so awesome video.
Fuckin' hell, laptops are a goddamn nightmare to work with compared to desktops. Having to mess around with all those core components, doing a near full disassembly just to be able to detach a screen! *shudder*
i know im about 1 year late but still, thing is apple products are not made to be serviced by customers thats why they dont bother with making it compact and easy to get around
Nice shooting and editing. Thank you. I wonder, though... is it worth pointing out that boards, chips, etc, change quite rapidly. What is right for a certain model today may be totally wrong for a revision that's only six months old. Happy days.
Thank you very much for this video. I managed with it to replace my fan and with the help of another video, replace the thermal paste. My 10 years old Macbook is working again .
Comment #1. Opening comment: Reminded me of my Dad, "Know what and where those screws and attachments go, as well as familiarizing its orientation! Can't go wrong. Spot on!! You have my attention. More to follow.
Me too I Teardown my 2009 Acer Aspire 5738G and I broke two screws I was screwed but I drilled In both of the screw and it was enjoy to take apart the laptop.
golly I can't imagine a more complicated process for removing a lite bulb, unless it is installing one. this video is easy to follow and makes it quite clear that apple designers should pay more attention to simplicity. It might even improve their bottom line.
Very well done. Those 4 screws on the front of the battery compartment - hard to see where you are pointing. But they are #'s 2,4,7,9 looking at them as in the video.
It is the best video I have seen that shows how to open a macbook and replace its parts. Congratulation. I have a question, I have a macbook early 2008; do you think I can apply your suggestions also on my mac? Thank Vincenzo
Thanks for an easy to listen to and easy to see video. I have a macbook screen that has typical backlight inverter symptoms. I took it apart today with your video to see if maybe the cable was pinched or if replugging would help. It didn't so I'll order an inverter. One question for when I install the inverter. My machine did not have the backlight power cable you show, looked like it might have been hard wired? I'm having a hard time figuring out model but it's Late 2007, 2.2. Thanks.
Excelent job adric! I am having a problem to get the screws next to the memory out. I think they are really stuck. None of my screw drivers can take them off. Do you have a tip? thank you very much for the video!
With just step-by-step photos (not a video), I replaced my keyboard / top cover without any trouble (twice actually). Patience and following directions are really all that’s required. So, take heart!
That was pretty neat. I have a question, I was upgrading the memory on my mbar A1181 model. One of the 2GB module slipped in easily into the slot but one on the left would not go in. I see something hanging into the slot, is that the problem?
hi The 8-Bit Guy,how can i replace my macbook A1181 palmrest keyboard trackpad flex ribbon cable. Can you make a video on that.I will be greatful for that.Your tutorial is great.
Great video, though I was hoping to see the reassembly. I need to replace my dvd drive, I think. Something in my black MacBook rattles inside as you tilt it. Not sure what it could be. But when I tried to use my dvd drive one if the last times back in 2009, I could feel something moving in that area. Like literally something on the back of the MacBook was moving. This happened before a dvd got stuck in the drive. I got the stuck dvd out.
You should have a recycle bin for old electronics. In my country in every hardware store there are bins for old small electronics and you can throw it there.
hi, i have a question - in some videos i found that hdd is hold in bracket by torx screws? i am asking because i want to slightly upgrade ma wife's 13" macbook late 2007 and don't want to get stuck immediatelly...
I have a late 2006 MacBook with a bad optical drive, would I be able to replace it with my optical drive from a 2011 MBP? I have it left over from using a data doubler.
Good video.. thanks. I use a smudger as find a screwdriver is more apt to scratch if you hand slips. The plastic smudgers are cheap and often dollar stores have them in a kit or ebay. I use a magnetized screwdriver as it's so easy to lose the weeny teeny screws. With a magnetic screwdriver it is less easy to drop them as they are near impossible to find once dropped. I use a pill reminder box that is always in dollar stores for compartmenting the loose screws.
Hi, i have a white macbook 1st gen, the same as this one, and the screen works but is very dark, the backlight obviously isn't working. Is this definitely the inverter? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Incidentally, the easiest way to start getting the keyboard panel loose is to push up from the underside inside the battery compartment. This will effectively allow you to lift up the left side of the panel (it's not well-secured once the screws re removed) and reduce risk of damaging the rather delicate edge of the panel by prying.
My fan is making a bit of an unusual noise occasionally, so I want to get in there is see if I need to clean out the fan. However, knowing how fragile these plastic Macbooks are around the rim of the keyboard plate, I am worried I'll crack or chip the edges if I take it apart. I've seen so many of these white MacBooks with chips/cracks in the palm rest/keyboard plate. Plus keeping the screws is a bit of a pain, but I guess I'll venture forward.
