Apple CarPlay vs. Android Auto 

Android Auto isn't supposed to let you access your phone while on Android Auto, but if you push the "Recent Apps" button on your phone, then hit the home button, it will let you use it as normal.

I'm pretty sure Android Auto disables your phone on purpose. Safety.

The fact you can't interact with your android phone while using auto is a good thing? Stops people idiotically using their phone in their car at the very least.

You shouldn't be able to use your phone when it's on carplay or auto, it's just basic safety. Nobody should be using the phone and driving.

I've been using both Apple Carplay and Android Auto in my Polo 2016 for the past 10 months and trust me, Android Auto is much much more functional and advanced. First, Google now, or whatever the name is for the voice functionally give me more "revelant" infos. I'm in Australia and when I ask Google at what time my grocery store closes, it tells me the closing hours, not iPhone. Second, Carplay (iPhone) crash/bug all the time with Spotfy or Maps, to a point that I have to disconnect, reconnect the phone. Also, iPhone maps is very hard to read on the display and gives me the worst route as soon as I get out of Sydney. Finally Google is more pleasing to the eyes, Apple looks like 8 yrs old toy tablet. I have much more to say but I can't really be bothered, I tried me best to love Apple Carplay, but Google Auto is just much more advanced and fit the needs to people like me, which is everyone that's not attached to death to the Apple cult.

If that Civic supports both Auto and CarPlay, why y'all gotta rent the Chevy? smh.

As much as we may hate it, I think the disabled phone with Android Auto is a good thing. Why would you hope for people to be more distracted with an update?

I have had the Pioneer AVH-4200NEX in my car since March, have used Android Auto with a Galaxy S6, S7 and now even Note 7 (my battery hasn't exploded!).... FYI- at least I know on all of these devices that if you press the recent apps button (soft key to the left of the home key) and then press the home key it will take you back to the home screen and Android Auto will run in the background. You will then have full access to the phone. This way you can still multitask on your Galaxy as it was designed to do. I am not sure the same method will work for other brands, but I hope this helps some people out! BTW if anybody is curious, both the stereo and the Note 7 are pretty badass!

I have a custom car pc tablet in my dash that I use for everything, can I install some server which enable carplay or android auto like I did with miracast and airplay?

You can in fact use your android phone whilst connected. With soft buttons, whilst in the android auto screen swipe up from the bottom of the phone, hit the app tray button then home button. You are taken to the home screen of the phone. Android auto still functions, you can select a track from Spotify and it will play on the car etc etc.

My sisters friend has a honda civic with carplay and sometimes when the phone is plugged up it will just reboot. That sounds like a crash to me...

Very impressive how she was able to converse with her self in the two cars, but was even more impressed on the video at the end when it looks like she recorded herself twice at once in the end...my mind trying to figure this out.

I have an iPhone, but Google maps is where its at. Apple maps is absolute garbage.

I've had Android auto in my Malibu since February. It has definitely gotten better with updates. Initially it didn't want to connect from time to time, but it has been consistent since the May update. As far as using the phone when it's plugged in, just hit the multitask button, then hit home...

You can download Android Auto and install it in basically every smart infotainment system with a USB hub. You can even install it in Mazda's new MZD connect.

You know it's illegal to not write "sponsored by Apple" in the description or to verbally say it in the video.

As someone who owns a car that supports both, I have to agree with the issue mentioned at 3:30 . Android Auto is crashing all the time whereas CarPlay has crashed NOT ONE TIME during our multiple drives with the new car. This is a total deal breaker for Android Auto, since you can't concentrate on the road when you have to constantly fiddle with the connection to get Google Maps working again. And no it is not the Phones issue, we tested it with the Nexus 6p, Nexus 5 and the OnePlus One, all running 6.0, which totally sucks since the Interface of Android Auto and the supported Services are vastly superior when compared to CarPlay. (Google Maps, Waze(soon) much more Audio services... )

Just want to clarify one thing here. (I know there are two different cars in this review but...) I would like to know whether this system support both Android Auto and Apple Car Play or there are actually two different system?

Selling Honda's for a living, I have NEVER seen Android Auto crash a single time... on the contrary to that and what she said, I have had countless demos where Apple CarPlay refuses to play sound but shows playing... I have to tell the customer to select a different source like FM and then go back to ACP to get the audio to work again... This shows the bias by trying to point out Android "crashing" while iOS runs smooth always... this in fact is not true and I'm pretty certain I have more experience with both platforms than the average person...

Being a motorcyclist, i like that android auto doesnt allow you to interact with your phone while powering android auto. Although the driver is still distracted...

This is an old video, but it still comes up first for this topic. 1) Android Auto now looks more or less like Carplay. It does now have the grid-like format. 2) Carplay has supported Google Maps for a long time now. It's right in the settings. 3) 3rd party replies work on Carplay these days.

Of course you can still interact with your Android phone even if its connected for Android Auto. Just go to the selection screen on the bottom left of the screen.

You can install an aftermarket headunit to get carplay. That's an easy one.

You can still hit the menu (to switch between open apps), then hit the home button to get back to the launcher on Android. Still waiting for Waze. wish Amazon Music was on Apple, not just Android.

they seem exactly the same to me except I heard that Carplay was very slow (they may have fixed that). The only difference is the home screen which I like androids more because it is simpler. What's the point of having carplay if the person can still use their phone and text and drive.

Google is actually doing work to make Android Auto a safer way to interact with your phone/apps while in the car. Making it so you can't use the phone is a feature, so I doubt that will change with some update. Google also has a lab where they are developing Auto to need much shorter glances and use more voice controls in order to minimize the amount of time you look at a screen instead of the road. See the recent Nat & Lo Android Auto video.

I can use my android phone fine when plugged into the car.. just swipe up (on my Pixel 2), gets you into the phone. Is Waze on iPhone yet??? If so, that's made by Google so that is a huge plus. I've used Android for years but considering trying iPhone for the first time ever, just to try it/see what it's like. Android Auto is great and I'm skeptical that Carplay won't be as good for what I would want it for. I use the Google assistant for different things, which seems like Siri does pretty poorly with a lot of different things.

They updated android auto early this year in JAN 2016 so as to use phone when plugged in.

Google maps is great but my android auto is so glitchy for me. Crashes and then I have to reboot everything to get going again.

I travel a lot to remote areas and the GPS in Apple/Android devices do not work well at all. That's where vehicle GPS systems win hands down. Plus, why would I want to tie up my auto system with my smartphone? Doing so is crazy.

Funny the big deal about this is just being made now. The aftermarket radio world has had Apple CarPlay for 2.5 years.

The entire point of android auto or car play should be that the driver should not have to use the phone. Here in the UK with the new traffic rules you cannot interact with touchscreen so unless these allow compete voice control it may be illegal.

Girl german cars have a navigation system, fast, precise and you can control it with touchscreen, touchpad and voice. And yes it doesnt crash

Google Maps v Apple Maps - I use both of them pretty much daily and they are pretty comparable on iOS 10. Google Maps still has a slight edge in my opinion.

I have a 8inch double din stereo in my car running android with access to all the apps in the play store and with navigation. why even bother with either one of these options only thing I need my phone for is for Wi-Fi and I can still use it I spend 200 for the stereo on Amazon and it looks amazing

I'm pretty sure that because Android auto is easier on third party apps was due to Android auto being open for development. So people with shitty car stereos but prowess in auto entertainment systems and Android love hooked up a tablet, flashed or rooted Android auto to the tablet, and connected charging and connection to the tablet, this has been out for awhile and certainly longer than apple car play.
