@@kenlyons3894 because people don't watch those types of videos. I've been doing this for years. My original audio tests never got people to watch it for longer than a minute. It was boring for people to watch. This format works way better. At the end of the day you just have to trust me, my years of experience tuning multi-million dollar sound systems, and mixing musical artists. If you don't, doesn't bother me, there's plenty of other people you can watch. Plus, even if the Nest audio wasn't a part of the video I still would say the Homepod mini sounds bad. I know how the nest audio sounds like. I've used it a lot. I also can't play those songs on RU-vid because of copyright. The unlisted video already has a copyright claim on it.

@@ThisIsTechToday hes saying holding up in the air is a little mosleading. Even tho you might be right everyone knows you will get a different sound when holding it up versus having it in on the desk or in the corner that goes for any speaker that's good or bad. In the air you would get a flatter more weaker sound. In the desk near a wall you would get more of a fuller sound out of a speaker.

I suppose I can see that but it's a youtube video playing telephone on audio quality. The main goal is to show how drastically different they sound and for me to tell you the difference. Again, it's a situation where you just have to trust the person reviewing it. You can either take it at face value or know what to look for when you check it out in person yourself. Recording it while it's on a desk would only impact the bass which is actually not the part that bothers me the most, it's the honky midrange and lack of high end clarity. Still, even if the Nest Audio wasn't in this video, I do not think the speaker sounds good. The main goal of a youtube video for sound is to show a comparison or difference not present the audio in the most accurate way because it is impossible to do that because I cannot control what you're listening to it on. Does that make sense?

When reading your comment I did not understand the "not resting on the desk" bit. You also held the Nest device in the air so the issue of sound being different due to being in the air is mute; under a similar condition the Nest seems to be a better sounding speaker. What I would like to know is what is the actual worth of an ecosystem (not just Apple's), as many features can still be done even if it takes a few seconds longer, and other features such as the intercom are not exciting or necessary.

You compare audio by Size and price. Also state what is lacking or not lacking . Volume, Balance, clarity, bass . Are the highs bright ? Etc. Not just , it doesn't sound good .

All “smart” speakers sounds horrible for audiophiles. Was surprised how bad the Nest audios sound (even compared to the OG Google home ). The ideal solution for me has been the Zeppelin air ( sounds amazing) connected to a chromecast audio through optical and using the Nests to stream audio to it through the google assistant . However, it just died and can’t replaced it with the new one as has no inputs

Nice video. But you mentioned at 4:20 that you can not transfer the music to a different speaker. Yes you can. I am on a chromebook and from chrome I can click the three dots than cast, and I can choose on which speaker or tv, or even groups (if i have them set in Google Home) to play at.

I bought and pair and I decided to keep them. They sound great for their size, perfect for a desktop right next to my MacBook Pro. These are designed to be used as near field listening on a desk and not to fill your house with sound. They only thing I don't like is figuring out the connectivity to them with various applications. As with any quality speaker their is a period of time where you need to play music through them to "break in" the voice coils and circuitry to achieve their peak sound quality. Also keep in mind that these are not rated as "high resolution" for hit bit rate music but are just "mid-fi" general purpose speakers with siri connectivity. If you set your expectations along these lines the $99 price for each channel then looks like a fair price.

Absolutely not… the google speaker is the same price and does everything better then this shit HomePod I own one and I’m returning it tomorrow and I’m a die HARDDDDD apple fan I’m honestly getting disappointed with apple lately with lack of innovation and lack of engineering but yet keeping high or sometimes jacking the prices up, this apple speaker sounds like it wouldn’t be 50 bucks like the google mini is because the HomePod sounds better but not better then the google aduio so I think the HomePod should be around 75 bucks well exactly at 75 bucks

I was in Apple store shopping for HomePod mini, upgrading from OG Google Home, sound really didn’t sound much better than Home so ended up getting OG HomePod. Now I have both one being more smart assistant and other music speaker.

funny how the "Audio Engineers" doesnt test the mids and the highs, and focuses exclusively on lows. I mean, not everyone listens to that bassy computer generated trash, some people listen to real music, that comes out of real instruments.

Great review! I will still go with the HomePod because of two features not mentioned here: It can act as a HomeKit hub (the cheapest device that can do this) + it can act as a border router for Thread based smart home devices.

@@hassanawodi5888 yes it listens, but Siri sends your request via a random identification number, not associated with your Apple ID in any way. Also, some of the simple commands are processed on device not being sent anywhere. So, it’s much more private than Amazon or Google. They save every recorded command and associate it with your Account.

Other meta data can be used to identify an individual and hence regardless of claims by Big Tech, there is just no incentive to protect your privacy. As a user, I believe that I'm the only who can actually protect my privacy and not believing some big tech.

I really like my HomePod Mini. I think it is one of the best small speakers I have ever heard. If you put it on a table in the corner of a room it sounds even better. I can hear it in every room on ground level of my house which is 1200 sq ft. As well as part of my finished basement. So I am very surprised you don’t like it. All of my friends and family think it sounds great.😳🤔

bought one... sound sure isn't great but it's not as horrible as the nest mini's and echo dots. didn't wanna shell out for the sonos one, but really wanted airplay 2 as google cast has not treated me well. still think it's an upgrade from my 2016 google home.

The wired power cord prevented me from even considering this speaker, as it limits where I can place the speaker, for example taking it outside. So typical of apple.

I have a Bowers & Wilkens Zeppelin Air that I use for my computer speakers and yeah it blows away my HomePod mini. No surprise there but what was a surprise was when I set up Apple Music to stream to both speakers at the same time. I was blown away by the combination of great base response from the Zeppelin and the clear sharp sound from the HomePod mini. I wish someone would do a video on this.

what's your opinion on the Ikea/Sonos Symfonisk? also same price point. I've returned it for the HomePod mini because of many of the good reviews. I don't care about smart speaker functionalities. (I'm still waiting on the HomePod mini, but had to already return the symfonisk since the return time period was almost up...)

I love good sound. But I also love connivance so home pod for me. Also google trust issues. On a side note, you must be an amazing audio engineer because even with RU-vid compression the sound on the video is masterful. Everything sounded constant easy to hear and to be honest I got a little butterflies when your speaking and the audio does not change levels. Subbed for that reason.

That won't make a difference here since they're both using the same quality, the homepod mini sounds WAY too bad to even remotely take advantage, it isn't even a high fi speaker and fails oh multiple frequency ranges

This comes out when you compare an omnidirectional speaker and a front facing speaker. When you hear the Nest off axxis you know what I mean. It's apples vs. pears soundwise when your microphone is close to the speaker and oriented frontally. As always, the sound check video is only a guide in this case, even if the production quality of the video conveys otherwise.

Bit of a mix for me - I have nest/home devices and some are important for audio (One in the kitchen, and I'll be getting 2 nest audios for my office), but others really don't matter - There's a nest mini in the garage on the wall that we just use for the 'broadcast' feature and as a doorbell chime. If they release a Nest Audio Max then I may get one for atmospheric music (for playing board games :P), but I have an old Sonos play 5 which does this okay at the moment.

Thanx for the detailed review! Just a thought for a future test: the HomePod Mini uses the room size and shape to bounce sound from the walls to make it more immersive and probably fuller. I'm curious if the HomePod Mini will still sound honky if you put it against a wall and put the mic maybe 5-6 feet away and then listen and compare it with the Nest 🤔. As you said in your supplemental video, physics play a role so I suspect putting the HomePod Mini closer to or in a corner may get it sounding a bit better, even if it's a slight difference. Thanx for the extra video, great that you even cater to us that wants to know all the details 😛

That's understandable, the whole design is small and the fact that there's only one driver inside limits the HomePod Mini's capabilities, but its still amazing the sound that comes out despite the limitations. I did get the the HomePod Mono and my main reason for buying was the Apple Eco System and how well it integrates with all the other Apple devices I own, while still having good enough sound to enjoy listening to music or watching videos. But for a great audio experience, a dedicated home theatre system would ultimately be the best. Thanx for the reply!

it's true. but only for speaker pairs. but if you have 2 obviously you want to use the speaker pair so it sucks that there's 500 to 1,000 MS lag. you could almost get around it with speaker groups but you can't cast RU-vid or any video to speaker groups even if they include a Chromecast video.

The HomePod dose have a screen - hmmm well no it does not BUT if you ask your HomePod mini to show pictures of a tiger it will send pictures to your phone - if you ask you HomePod mini how to cook chocolate brownie it will send a recipe to your phone or iPad so there are work around on how to kind of have a screen with your HomePod mini

I agree; the HomePod Mini has a poor sound. There's very little bass and the higher frequency sounds are harsh and uncomfortable for me. Sometimes it sounds like the music is being compressed when playing from the Mini and despite what a lot of people say the Mini can't handle music well at its maximum volume - it's better at 80% or 90% volume.

@@driquea4739 No, that's unlikely because I have two of them which were purchased at separate times so it's unlikely that both are broken. I don't know why people think they sound great. I have two Nest Audio's as well and they have significantly better sound quality and they were cheaper. I also have a JBL Charge 4 which was the basically the same price (a few dollars more) as the Mini and it's also much better with regards to sound. I have no doubt that the Amazon Echo 4th Gen is also a lot better though I don't have one of those. But some people consider the Echo to be better than the Nest Audio. The Mini's sound quality should be better at the price they're being sold at.

I've been honest in my review and my responses, why don't you be honest and admit that you just want a video that tells you what you want to hear to align with your bias or to justify the purchase you already made? I’d be curious how well the broadcasting works over time. We have several Google Home minis and one original Google Home spread throughout the house. The speaker group portion works virtually flawlessly, but the broadcasting has been super inconsistent over the past couple of years and even more so in the past half year or so.

@@ThisIsTechToday Frustratingly in various ways. Once recently it broadcasted a message several minutes after we sent it, which was amusing but frustrating. Often it will broadcast to one or more of the units, but not others. Sometimes it broadcasts to all the units. Often when replying, the reply is ignored by Google. Other times it will think about broadcasting and just not do it. We even tried making a new Google Nest Mini the main home reasoning that maybe the old original Google Home wasn't up to the task any longer. That didn't help. We have solid internet averaging about 150 mbps down and 5.5 up (not great, but solid). We are longtime eero users and recently upgraded them to the wifi 6 version. The Google Home units control the lights and thermostat and music well but are just very finicky with the broadcasting. Maybe I'll put a spare Apple sticker on each one and see if that helps. ;)

When you are comparing the sound quality, you took the homepod out from the surface. Which makes it to sound worse as it’s designed to get help from the surface to reflect the sound and make it more richer. So this review is not done as intended.

Have an iPhone so can set reminders on my phone and so on have a Denon ceol home system so Spotify contact works a dream - have a nest hub in the bedroom which shows me the time gets me up in the morning and turns on the lights so overall no need for this HomePod seem they were to late to the show for me will save my £99 for my music subscription.

I just got one of these after hearing how "great the sound quality is". It's better than the little bluetooth speaker I had, but I'm pretty disappointed. It's fairly clear sounding but it's quiet and has no bottom end at all.

They sound terrible from a distance, but I set up one on each side of my bed and they actually sound great. I put them upside down so the treble doesn’t get absorbed by my mattress.

So an audio engineer that tests and judges speakers only by their volume levels and solely uses low end sounds from electronic popmusic (that no speaker of those sizes can actually replicate truly anyway) to give a measure of the bass only, because that is the most important aspect of a sound stage right. Come on man. This review doesn’t say anything.

Thanks för sharing. I went from "i want to buy this thing" to "no thanks! i really don't need it". It bothers me that Apple chose to sell this in some countries in Europe but not all. Totally agree with you about no need of including Apple stickers in 2020. Who wants them!? The charger looks big and crappy.

@@driquea4739 it's obviously better than those other ones but it still doesn't sound good and in fact does NOT sound better than the new Google nest. I have a review on those as well and have personally tested it. Max Tech, I love him and know him personally, and I'm not here to put him on blast, but his review I specifically am thinking about regarding reviewing errors. It's okay, they're fantastic at many other things that I am not, but I know very well that my ears and audio engineering experience is my area of strength to the point that I can confidently say that the conclusions of my review are more qualified.

I'm sure someone already said this, but you can absolutely switch from room to room / speaker to speaker in the Google Home ecosystem. You can do so by voice or digital interface either within the streaming application or in the Google Home application.

I might end up actually enjoying it though (I guess getting used to), but now I’m trading in an iPad that I don’t use for a HomePod. I hope the two of them together make my living room fun. Good for me I guess. Later on Will buy a small Denon system that has such great reviews everywhere (although the HinePos mini has so many ‘big sound’ reviews!!!)

The Google home has had broadcast for a while I use it often ,but it use to send a copy on my voice ,so i would scare people at my house now it does it in google assistant voice so they took away the fun

Thank you for an honest review, I been looking whether to or not but it, but all the reviews I were finding said it had amazing sound for its small size and for me that’s just unbelievable compared to the nest audio which is bigger and has bigger drivers. Now to do more research on what speaker to buy

Bigger size can have an impact, but there are plenty of big speakers that sound bad. You can have a small speaker that is tuned and able to produce great sound for its size. The homepod mini is tuned/eq'd poorly and sound bad, even for its size.

I was thinking that too, but then I read on appleinsider that: The HomePod mini is not compatible with Bluetooth audio streaming. The Bluetooth connection is only used for setup and other minor features. AirPlay 2 requires Wi-Fi.

@@1nine8two39 You'd be surprised how many people have zero clue about what actually sounds good. They just regurgitate whatever the marketing says or what another big youtuber says. So yes, you should listen to me. I actually have a career in audio engineering and have mixed platinum-selling artists and set up, tuned, and mixed on multi-million dollar sound systems. I doubt other reviewers have that experience.

Apple's setup and handoff is amazing without a doubt and will have to purchase two of these for apple people in my life. Apple fans refuse to go any other way even if you can show them a better or more open option

@@KeyBored101 actually no, I’ve watched RU-vidr that have compared it to the google nest and the new echo which are the same price and it beats both of them on and and is the smallest of the 3. If people are just looking for the best sound I would go with the HomePod mini, if they want the smartest assistant I would go with the new echo, and those that want to throw money away on a nest product that google will probably make obsolete in a few years like many of their products then go with the goo nest.

Yup. They are. Look at how many reviewers say the Homepod mini sounds good...yikes. I promise you, my ears are great. That's why people hire me to mix audio and tune sound systems for concert venues and events.

@@driquea4739 Most people don't have trained ears and don't mix audio for their profession. The number of people that say crappy earbuds or headphones sound "good" is really concerning as they're misleading a lot of people. Scientifically, you can even measure it's frequency range and objectively say that these sound bad. The fact that I can identify it's deficiencies by ear without using a frequency analyzer AND verifying it with an analyzer just shows that it is not egotistical, but a more skilled reviewer in this particular area. So yes, I do think it's appropriate to call out other reviewers who blast their music at full volume and have hearing damage or have no informed or skilled experience on the physics and science of sound and mixing like I do because I'm here to make sure that YOU the consumer are not being lied to or mislead by someone who is inexperience and unqualified to do so. I think the real issue is that people are triggered because they're not hearing the type of review they want from me, but I don't care about pleasing people and making them hear things that make them feel good, I care about honesty and integrity so you aren't being misled. If caring about people getting the best they can or making an informed decision where they can willingly buy something knowing of it's issues or deficiencies for whatever reason they're rightfully able to make, then I'm not the channel for you. No one gets a pass from an honest review. I will always find the good and bad, and when it's especially bad, it will be highlighted. So no, it's not egotistical. If it was egotistical, I'd seek every possible to way to lie and manipulate you to please you and everyone else to grow at all costs even if it meant I was pushing trash on you for only my personal gain. But clearly, that's not the case.

Thanks for the opinion on it. Curious to hopefully be able to listen to it as well sometime! I do want to point out as well thought, that the HomePod ALSO has a mic disconnect too - not sure if you're aware. ;) Granted it's not hardware like on Google (and some might argue that they do it as a physical switch because of the opinions that we're being listened to 😅, although Siri itself got into hot water recently) but at least its software. (L.E. Or... I just remembered - you can ask Siri to stop Hey Siri too 😋) If you look in the Home app on the HomePod's settings you'll see there's an option to disable "Listen for Hey Siri" and that cuts off the mic altogether". I though it's important to mention for clarity and for viewers that might not know that :)

i owned theese smart speakers and they get realy old realy fast and after couple of months they are only a listening device for your prefered tech company. I sold them all and gor Edifier Speakers that have BT support for listening music. All of these have crappy sound. If you love quality sound you won't listen to music on these devices.

I have smart speakers in every room, most are JBL link speakers and they sound great. I can also cast to my home theater receiver or a chromecast connected to another amplifier connected to patio outdoor speakers.

I have a video waiting to be edited between the two. Honestly, looking at the entire holistic experience and not purely the sound only, I'd still pick the airpods pro. It's a much better experience in terms of being consistent, easy, and reliable.

A screen is perk for a home speaker. But since the main focus is being a speaker. Audio quality is still the top reason to buy. Convinience with the apple ecosystem is a perk but it comes with a cost buying everything apple. Unless I'm a millionaire. I'll keep my wallets out of apple ecosystem for now.

It's funny because the Echo show had the best sound, the nest home has the best interface and compatibility, and Apple has a solid walled ecosystem. They all have some strengths and a glaring weakingness that others do really well.

I don’t think Apple would ever make a Siri-based smart display because in a way it already exists - it’s called iPhone and iPad. A Nest Hub or an Echo Show is ironically kind of a really bad tablet that’s glued to a power outlet. The original appeal of a smart AI assistant is that you can interact with it without ever having to look at it or touch it, I agree that I would want something like that for its cool factor but I think if Apple were do it, it would have to offer something really “worth” putting a screen on it

@@ericzhang7820 it’s not a “bad tablet glued to a power outlet,” actually. that’s kind of a narrow way of thinking about it. having a screen on a smart speaker helps give better visual feedback, ambient information (like the weather, time, calendar, etc) or voiceless control over smart home devices. having netflix / youtube on it is just a bonus, and honestly i almost never use that on any of my smart displays.

A display on a smart speaker is incredible. I think it makes sense once you have one. There’s something to be said for devices with specific purposes rather than expecting your phone to be the center of everything. Also, if you live with other people the “display” aka your phone keeps moving. I think that would be annoying. Lol
