The Apple II Plus project. I've never owned or used an Apple II but have always been interested in them. As a kid I really wanted one but couldn't afford it. I picked up this "non-working parts" unit for $50 and of course wondered if I could get it running again. In this video we take a look inside the power supply.

There is actually 3 separate earth points where the circuit board is grounded to the chassis. One in the corner you showed for capacitor C10 to secondary GND, another in the diagonally opposite corner near the power switch (for the safety caps C3 & C4 to the filtered Active and Neutral) and one in the centre near the main transformer for it's green/yellow earth wire.

Those negative voltages are in tolerance. You’re not the only one who keeps losing tools that you just had minutes ago :) The blue neutral wire should pull off the pin on the board, it just isn’t as obvious as the active pin.

I just went through a similar PS for an Apple IIe (Astec AA11040-B) and found that the AC side filter capacitors were leaky (up to 100uA) when tested at 250v. Also, the RIFA line to line capacitor case was split, exposing the electrode material to atmosphere. The PS outputs were still OK, even when tested under load, but since I want to run my IIe a lot, I decided to replace all the electrolytics and the RIFA capacitor. Enjoying your channel BTW and just subscribed.

Good video. FYI, The lone blue wire pulls right off the board.

the most common thing to go bad is the gold rifa caps up by the switch, they remind me of caramel candy. on mine those caps are in the power socket unlike that one.

Definitely replace those RIFA mains X2 caps if there are any in your Apple II PSU as they will eventually smoke and leave a horrible mess and smell that’s hard to clean up.

I’ve redrawn most of the Apple II series power supplies (mostly the 240V versions) and PCB overlays. They were being hosted on appleiioz.com web site for the last few years. Unfortunately the web site is down and hosting elsewhere is in progress. If you need copies of the diagrams I can send them via email individually until the site is set up again.

Another daredevil who brazenly ignores the warnings on the power supply. All you've ended up with is an out of spec machine that will always remain unreliable.

Please explain why it's now "out of spec / unreliable" so everyone can learn. Your comment, right or wrong has no meaning without context.
