I wish Apple Intelligence had a little indicator for when it’s doing the processing on-device vs. on Apple’s servers. I’m curious how much it can do with only local resources.
Based on the state of union details, A LOT can be done locally, writing, text summary, and even Xcode fill-in can be done on-device. Regardless, this is an amazing idea that I feel Apple could elegantly include in the Siri animation. Like if its using the on-device model, it stays purple/bluey and if it goes to the server it goes green (maybe a more obvious Dynamic Island animation too Like "->->->-> server icon" ) or some other contrasty colour that doesn't have negative connotation but is very obvious. If they really are about transparency and privacy, this HAS to be on their radar, its just too good of an idea.
Probably will be possible to test this by trying to use it with the device offline or maybe selectively blocking Apple services on a network. I’d be curious to see what types of requests succeed and which fail
I was skeptical, but as a local news reporter I find the new call recording feature and audio transcription stuff to be a game changer. No longer must I expense a third party software for this. Honestly I’m considering getting a 16pro now.
My father-in-law tends to lose track of longer conversations. He does best to read a recap later on his own and then ask follow questions. I see this feature being a great tool for him as well.
Now when I call a company about dumb shit I need fixed etc. I can just record the phone call “for quality assurance” and use as proof they give me the info I need right from a phone call 🤣
Is Siri still dumb though? I can’t find a single review that even mentions the core premise of the update: that it’s supposed to actually function as a modern intelligent assistant.
Siri is going to understand your natural language and stop with all the incorrect dictation. It's will be in the beginning stages of full device control. I may hold off for iphone 17
My understanding is that it’s only the available features covered in this video. The natural language assistant type of features is still to be released to the developers, let alone the public.
After seeing googles gemini, apples AI looks very far back behind.. I used to love IPhone but more and more I feel I pay mainly for the brand Apple than for actually good functionality.
@@parzivallevel1048Yeah and only is supported by 1 phone besides the new one coming out, so more than half of Apple users won't even be using this feature, they'll be using other subscription paid services that do more, Apple is behind in AI, the only thing they have going for it is the ecosystem "Steve Jobs" built and their MChips, other than that they lack anything interesting, and keep releasing the same thing over and over again with low specs to force you to buy their expensive options, this is why only iPhone 15 has AI because of "Ram" but if would've put more ram in the other iPhones instead of "optimization" then more iPhones would gotten the feature.
Tbh the feature for setting alarms and timers with voice/text without opening the specific app is what a phone assistant always should’ve been able to do. Yes you can do that without AI today, BUT you have to remember specific key phrases and often assistant doesn’t get you right. The way he showed it here is good improvement imho. And it should hopefully work for more apps than just timers and alarms. Sadly, I’m an android user and in the EU… xD
I dont know, we didn’t miss chatgpt before, but since its a really useful tool, many use it daily. Or the computer in general. Who in 1980 knew that we would all walk around with a personal phone and access to the internet in our pockets. I guess we will have to wait and see
I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max. Why spend money on upgrades just for Apple's smart features when things like proofreading, rewriting nicely, sounding professional, or making summaries can all be done easily with the ChatGPT app? What's the point of Siri if it can't even change settings for us? How is it different from ChatGPT's voice feature? ChatGPT seems to do these things much better. Are there other things Apple's smart stuff can do that ChatGPT can't?
Apple Intelligence will integrate all your information into your smart device. For example, you'll be able to ask Siri to find a photo of you which you were wearing an orange T-shirt and that has been taken near a lake. That is just an example. I'm pretty sure they will develop the abilities of Siri and AI by the time. So, Siri won't be just an AI based chatbot. As being owner of an iPhone 14 Pro Max, I'm so frustrated that I won't get new features.
@@asianstud7 I too am tempted to go back to Pixel as it has always been a great phone but the newest Pixel 9 pro gets blown out of the water via bench marks and processing power by the now year old iPhone 15 pro and the new iPhone 16 is due out in a few days. I want to go back to Pixel but they need to step up their game and not just say wellllll all the processing power is devoted to AI. okay people still play games and multi task on their phones though.
I love how EVERY SINGLE video showing off Siri's "support questions" feature, INCLUDING Apple's keynote itself, ALL ONLY show "how to schedule a text", as if all the reviewers know that Siri isn't *actually any better* on this front other than that ONE piece of info.
I’m very impressed with IOS 18 and 18.1, as both are running very smoothly with only minor bugs, and battery life isn’t bad either! The new writing tools are awesome and are very useful ! Can’t wait for more from Apple Intelligence!
Tap for Siri seems redudant but is a nice UX being able to double tap and ask something about the current context in the future like "what is this?" at something you are seeing on your screen at that time
Can you clear a banner notification with an “x” like you used to be able to? I hate seeing a banner notification while the phone is unlocked only to see it a second time on the Lock Screen
All of that looks good. Meanwhile with iOS 17 if you say set up an alarm in 60 minutes , it will set up a timer . As my timer doesn’t prompt a ringing tone because I use it to end the music , it’s no use . Ugh, so frustrating.
Anyone else have Siri going off on its own multiple times on their phone or MacBook? I was next to my phone on my MacBook and every time he said Siri mine went off. 😂
Can’t help but feel pissed that all of these features won’t be available on 14Pro. People say “not enough RAM”. Well, Google make it work - Apple just want us all to update our phones. Well, it ain’t gonna happen!
Maybe if they actually supplied the right amount of ram to begin with instead of being cheap and calling it "optimization" half the devices would be able to have these features, if Steve Jobs were here he'd fire half the company for these poor decisions of Apple today, they keep doing this money scheme with no new innovations they'll be left behind like the 90's, ecosystems only work for so long before people get tired of having to pay for a new device to get a modern feature for a phone that costs 1k.
Regarding the call recording, I wonder what companies will say when YOU are recording THEM... :D These seem to be really useful features, especially on the job, for those lucky enough to use an Apple device at work. I wonder if the memories suggested by Photos will significantly improve - currently they are using photos that make little sense and sometimes with places that go together. And there is no way to provide feedback. Still better than memories generated in iOS16. The game changer will be when we stop getting the "I can show you the results if you ask from your iPhone" when using an iPod mini, to ask a simple question. I don't see why iPod minis shouldn't work with Apple Intelligence when the request could be processed by an iPhone 15 Pro Max connected on the same network/iCloud account. Thanks for sharing Dan!
Great summary, I’m finding this type of AI use fantastic. Some of them were cool looking like the Disney photo album collage… but overall, I think this will definitely disrupt how we interact with our phones (and devices in general) in a major way, finally. Found them quite fast to trigger too… the 8AM alarm is set basically instantly. Curious about the final release.
I can understand that running AI can be compute intensive, but having Apple Intelligence only available to iPhone 15 Pro and above is a very "Apple" thing to do imo. A possibly lost opportunity to give other users with a lower model (aka the majority) a chance to even try the feature and compare it to other AI apps like Gemini and ChatGPT.

I wonder when they will integrate it into their Pro Apps. It could potentially be so cool, efficient and seamless, to just be in your creative flow and continually give voice commands to your virtual assistance. Just work in complete harmony with the technology, without taking creative decisions away from you. Simply helping you to bring your visions to life. Things like "play me some snare samples from my library", then it will do it in the background(maybe even has to go to the finder to do it) and you can keep navigating in the project, basically do whatever you want. Then if you like one "add this one to this sampler (referring to the plugin you have currently open)". Or combined commands like "sidechain this track with track 4 using the izotope Neutron Plugin ... oh and put an EQ before that with a high shelf at 7k minus 3 db." If you don't say certain details, it might just use a standard value and you can tweak it later. Often when it came to voice command things I was like "hm, would be easier and quicker to just do it with the mouse, a key command or a template". But I think the magic comes with the possibility of it working in parallel at the same time with you(in the background) and it also understanding commands consisting of multiple tasks. It could be a future of way less clicking, scrolling, searching and cleaner interfaces. Resulting in you just being focused on the creative part/the actual craft. I see it being especially useful for getting ideas down fast without distraction. But probably also for more technical/finesse stuff like mastering or color grading. To relieve you from unnecessary clicks and scrolls and so on. And it won't be like you HAVE to use it or it changes the process you have had for the last 20 years. Everybody can just use it to the extent they like and how it serves them the best. Would be really cool to see that in the future 😊 (actually expected Logic Pro 11 to kinda be this way...) But let's see...
Couldn't Apple just run their AI on servers for older devices that don't have the 17 Pro chip and above? That way, the AI could function through a subscription service, with the only factor affecting response time being your internet connection.,, compared to on device processing for newer chips.
From what I see its just Voice recognition, spell checking and avatars for kids, they're just rebranded features we already have and for the most part don't use.
I don’t think it has anything that you can’t get out of daily free uses from chat gpt right now, well at least it’s not worth upgrading for me personally..
I've been using CoPilot (linked to a backtap gesture for quick access) in place of Siri for a while now. This new Apple AI will be more convenient I think, because it's more integrated with the phone. Otherwise, not much difference. I wouldn't upgrade "just" for this, but I think it will be nice to have when I do upgrade.
When recording a phone call, if the other person is on an office phone or maybe an Android device, what kind of notification (if any) will they receive?
@@macrumors I can’t figure how that would work, though. A whisper? A tone? An audible message? After all, an office phone doesn’t have a screen to receive a notification. And Android would have to be a system notification somehow, but how would that work since there’s no app on the Android phone for it to handle a notification? Have you tested this?
I'm curious if this runs on device, or if it uses some LLM in the cloud. You could try turning on airplane mode and checking which of the Apple Intelligence features still work.
@@jerm_ No. First, the ChatGPT integration is not working at all. Second, it asks your permission every time it sends a request to ChatGPT. It is a little unclear when it uses *Apple's* servers vs. on-device.
I have a Pixel 4 and while watching the video I tried all the features on my 5 years old phone. Some of those were even faster. Did a confrontation with a friend of mine's iPhone 14 Max: my old pixel was faster in opening all the apps and taking photos, with higher results. I was astonished, I was wondering buying an iPhone but after some studies about phones and their OS I can't find a single good reason on having an iPhone. Such a waste of time and money

The writing assist can be done by copying the same text and pasting it into Gemini or ChatGPT. I don't think owners of older iPhones should be too jealous YET.
So far Siri hasn’t really improved. I have old software and she can understand context when I ask for weather then humidity etc… hopefully Apple integrates GPT in a seamless way so I don’t constantly have to accept privacy statements for each request.
Siri is useless .. u have still face unlock it to do anything .. I can’t ask about the traffic or weather or directions across the room I have to always pick up the phone and look at it and even then half the time it has no idea 🤷🏼♂️
Can anyone else that is actually living outside United States confirm if this new Siri shows if you just set your Region to US English. Or can we confirm now if Apple geoblocks this feature using real GPS data or region where your Apple ID is set in?
I found it useless Question “Hey Siri what events do I have in my calendar from 16th August to 6th of September in Melbourne” Answers “I don’t see any events called 6” “I’m sorry I don’t understand” “Calling Augie” 🤦🏼♂️ I tried rephrasing 10x different ways before giving up and just opening my calendar and doing it myself.
