No amount of hardware can change the fact the the iPad is still just a bigger iPhone. They NEED to make iPadOS a touch screen MacOS. That's the only way they're ever going to save the product.

I think full MacOS is the only way to save it. I'm not going to buy another iPad just cause it's a little faster and a "should have always been" centered camera. We need more usability at this price point. All people are doing now is just buying used iPad Pros. Why? Cause they're all nearly identical. They need a massive upgrade or else iPad will end up like the iTouch.

For U/UX sake, all iPads under 13" should run the existing consumer like software with iPadOS and its walled garden/ecosystem. The Pro marketed devices should be 13-16" pencil/touch enabled and run full macOS for pro's of all types running industry standard full-blown apps with extra i/o ports. I'll tell you what the iPad actually needs. It needs a major price drop, or it needs to have a full OS. What I mean by full OS is an Operating System that truly competes with MacOS and Windows. Having full MacOS app support and functionality support, including an actual file system and open app support meaning the ability to freely install 3rd party apps from say github etc..

neither of those are going to happen though. reduce the margins on a product? upset investors. reduce apple's control over the ecosystem? upset investors. the ipad is going to stagnate unless apple is willing to upset some investors, which i doubt they are.

Agree. I dunno about other people, but I see the iPad as a portable Mac. Even more portable than a MacBook Air. And without the added weight of a keyboard. But the iPads are positioned as a separate "entertainment" device for games, for consuming videos/movies, and priced horrendously high, And the current iPads can't replace the laptop or desktop completely. So it fails. Maybe if Apple makes an iPad that runs MacOS, and drops the price, then it would make sense for me to get one. Otherwise, I would trudge on with my MacBook Air.

I am disabled. After a car accident that destroyed my professional life and my ability to stay focused due to chronic pain and physical limitations. To this day I can’t maintain focus playing Catan at the kitchen table with my wife and kids for more than 20 mins. The iPad Pro has given me a new lease in life, a chance of professional relevance. After working hard over the years learning 3D modelling, from the couch, the bed, floor on my back to small stretches at a desk, 3D printing prototypes designed on the iPad. I just recently launched my youtube channel to promote and sell my products. I am not currently financially and professionally relevant yet, but I see the light at the end of the tunnel which otherwise wouldn’t be possible without the iPad Pro. My only other option is heavy medications and couch or bed dependant. I chose being productive (with chronic and constant pain but having a purpose in life) using the iPad. Without it, I would just be a burden without a purpose aside trying to survive. I don’t mean to be harsh in my post, but that is a reality. The iPad Pro gives an option to people like myself who have very limited choices or see none, it gives me my voice. Other people may have found way for their voices. But I see none for me except this.

I got an iPad with an Apple Pencil and the Logitech combo touch, which is a case with keyboard and trackpad. I got it mainly because of procreate, but I had also hoped that I could use it as a laptop replacement and use windows/linux when at my desk. Unfortunately it didn't work out that way. iPadOS is just too limiting. No Adblock, emulation, proper side loading, etc. One of the simplest annoyances is that you can't even rename an image in the default photos app. It's just not a feature. In order to rename an image, you need to save it to files, go to the files app, rename it there, save it back to the photos app, and go back to the photos app. You might also want to delete it from the files app and also delete the duplicate image with the old name in the photos app. You can make a shortcut to do all that for you, which is easy enough if you know how, but even then, there are more steps and that's not something you should even need to do to do something that simple. This is just one of the many things holding back iPadOS. I kept coming across little things like this until I decided that an iPad, no matter how powerful, cannot replace a laptop for me. It might be able to replace a laptop for people who just want to stream, browse the the web, write an email, etc. but I need more from a laptop. I ended up getting a MacBook and using my iPad as a procreate machine or secondary display, which was probably apple's goal in the first place. Getting me to waste money on another device, because the iPad in intentionally nerfed.

Every other company would kill to be able to do something like that, and now that they share the same SoC it just seems like it's an executive decision to bar this idea because they are worried that it would canibalize the iPad sales.

I LOVE my iPad Air 4, bought in 2020. It does everything I need it to do. I use it to type documents and my blog with a Magic Keyboard for the iMac. I can edit photos easily with the apple pencil. I also use a MacBook Pro for work, but I am constantly finding myself trying to touch the screen to move my cursor around the screen and it's super annoying that I can't do that on a MacBook. If Apple would ever make a touchscreen MacBook, that doesn't require the use of a trackpad, that would be the only reason I could fully support switching to that for personal use. I really, really like the ability to use the touchscreen while also having a keyboard connected and not needing to use a mouse or trackpad.

I use my iPad everyday. To me, my MacBook Pro is a tertiary device. The truth is that most people only need a laptop for every day web browsing, emails, and movies/music. All of this can be accomplished with an ipad and Magic Keyboard. Ever since I got the Magic Keyboard it turned my iPad into a primary device. Sometimes when I’m home, I’ll even leave my phone in another room and carry my iPad with me. If apple were to make a full fledged MacOS for the iPad, I would probably no longer need my MacBook Pro.

My guess is that the toughest part about selling ipads is that, unlike phones, they last forever. I'm just thinking about updating my ipad Pro 12.9 this year to the M3 because my 2018 is just starting to show it's age with the newer design and illustration apps eating more memory. Once i have the M3, i guarantee it'll last me another 7 years. It's not an upgrade people make often. As they saturate the market, there is a smaller buying pool. Also the OS is holding it back from replacing a computer completely. If they had a more mac like interface and a better file browser system when "docked" or if they would open up sideloading, I could see it replacing the need for a laptop on my end almost completely.

My own personal take on this is simple, Ipad pros don't make anysense at all, especially if you add keyboards. Ipads should be used for their larger screen size to consume media, and be focused on their ability to use pens, becoming more focused on being a note taking and art device. No matter how powerful they make it, ipad os isn't good enough, and in addition with their current pricing, its not too far from a macbook air, and that is without the keyboard. I believe that apple should either discontinue the ipad pro line, and make their focus for ipads the more budget friendly options, and focus on improving the screen, to improve media consumption, note taking and art, or rebrand the ipad pro into the touchscreen macbook instead.

Multitasking on ipad was an still now is a joke. I bought a samsung tab s8 ultra, it is far away from perfection, it must improve a lot, but at least I don t miss the multitasking of a laptop

I bought an ipad a few years ago (didn't do enough research) to be compatible with a friends Mac. It turned out to be a mess, not enough compatibility. Pages on the pad seems crippled vs on the Mac. Working outside the 85% compatible spectrum was aggravating to say the least.

The way they could do it is with the Magic Keyboard, with it attached, the iPad opens full fat MacOS, not attached, it defaults to iPad OS.

Perfectly happy with the 12.9 I have. They would really have to add some unexpected capabilities to even think of an upgrade.

honestly, the only time i'll upgrade my iPad (an iPad Air 4th gen) is when the app support and software support is completely gone. it's just never been worth it for me to upgrade beyond what i already own.

Yes, the camera orientation in landscape is a strange look with video calls, but more frustrating for me is just getting the iPad open because I have my thumb over the camera for Face ID. My M1 Pro is plenty fast enough, and the USB port is great, the screen is good enough, but a true black contrast screen would be very welcome. Reality is I bought this for a very portable device at travel/work, and with an external APPLE keyboard it does that. The thought of any price increase, or even thinking about just paying for a new iPad, is just not going to happen for me. And when I really want to do many things (iPad OS vs MacOS), they always seem more difficult, or a workaround to do compared to my MBP.

I use my iPad for making movies. That’s my favorite feature. Current iPads have just average cameras, an iMovie app that is basically good but hasn’t had a new thing added to it it in ages. It is also buggy software that Apple just can’t be bothered to fix. Final Cut for iPad doesn’t include audio editing which is absurd and is subscription based. At this point, (to my knowledge) no one makes a landscape oriented high quality stereo microphone with proper windscreens. That leaves you with the built in mics that perform poorly if there is any wind anywhere. I know that creating movies on the iPad is not the thing everyone wants to do, but there still is a substantial number of people that love using it that way. The screen is excellent and it’s like looking through a view camera. It’s beautiful and what you see is what you get. But the camera in the iPad should be as good as the best iPhone camera or even better. If Apple released a Cinema iPad they could pull out all the stops and deliver a breathtakingly great camera with actual clear zoom capabilities and off either excellent built in mics that can deflect wind noise or one that you can easily pop on when making videos. They could actually wake up the team responsible for iMovie and actually make it better. Offering more visual transitions and other things that they put into the Memories app. The Memories app has all kinds of extraordinary transition effects not brought to iMovie. Apple could really do some extraordinary things but they really don’t care. We are in an age where the monopolization of the marketplace has led to stagnation. What we really need is new companies that are actually competing with each other to really make their products great instead of just advertising them as such.
