With WWDC 2022 now behind us, today we're going to take a look at iPadOS 16 and specifically see if the new Stage Manager feature brings some pro functionality to the iPad Pro with M1 Chip. Will this feature be enough to make the iPad Pro actually Pro? Is it worth it's high price tag or is Apple still trying to get the iPad to make sense, after 12 years of being almost amazing? Today we'll find out!

What do you think about Stage Manager for iPadOS? Plus, create voice over your content easily with today’s sponsor Typecast!

Stage manager is probably designed for iPad first, then added to MacOS, not the other way around

Apple is trying to walk a fine line of adding new features to the iPad that make it much more capable, while also maintaining its simplicity and ease of use for the vast majority of iPad users. However, in doing so, Apple basically disappointed both types of users

I can buy an iPad Air, but the software just can’t justify spending thousands of pounds on an iPad Pro, it’s not a ‘pro’ device yet. Sadly.

As someone who only recently switched to Mac, I feel like using a desktop Mac is fairly intuitive. But using my iPad for anything more than a mobile device is very confusing.

You really hit it with this one. I've hated the multiple window implementations on iPad since they started. Totally confusing to use in any of the forms they have taken over the past several years. With the M2 Air completely solving the problem of a super portable device that can do anything, I am happy to have the iPad again become only what it was in the first place -- a news reader, email reader, and entertainment device for travel, the train or the plane. Any cheap iPad can do those jobs, or a MacBook Air. If I did something unique with the touch-screen, drawing with the pencil, or using it as a second display next to a Mac while adding a touch control feature, I could see those things as a useful, but that is pretty niche, and I'm sure a lower end model iPad would work just fine.

I suspect they are purposefully limiting functionality on the iPad to enforce more separation between iPads and Macbooks. It's like they are doing the absolute bare minimum with regards to multitasking and window management for each release of iPadOS.

From Apples point of view you can never have too many Apple devices. So they make very sure that an iPad cannot completely substitute for a Macbook and vice versa. That is it is limited and a bit crappy by design.

I think stage manager was only meant for the external display support, and that split view was always their vision for multi app support on iPad OS. They just need to update split view to support more apps on screen to really take advantage of the iPad Pro's power and screen real estate.

I don‘t even want stage manager on my iPad :‘)

Why didn‘t you cover Stage Manager on an external monitor? I think that is where it really becomes useful. I have tested that on my own and I think, that it will be great, when 16 becomes final.

For me iPadOS 16 is good step in the right direction. I was super disappointed about iPadOS 15, because I bought the M1 iPad Pro 12’9 inch to do more work (especially video editing). The stage manager and proper support for external displays now will give much more possibilities and use cases, although not perfect yet.

You've got it exactly right... I'm looking at the updates every year and don't see why I would upgrade from my 1st gen iPad Pro

It’s most likely a RAM issue. The 2018 iPad maxes out at 6GB. The M1 not only has up to 16, but it can also temporarily access the free storage to use as RAM. Stage manager is much more memory intensive than running just 2 apps side by side.

Only thing that could fix this is for Apple to make a touchscreen Mac. Let the iPad be an iPad, but the price of an iPad needs to adjust down considering how limited it is.

I recently upgraded from an iPad 6th Gen to an M1 Air and despite it being quicker its quite limited with the constraints of iPadOS. I would’ve like to have seen them include more Mac like qualities besides Stage Manager especially when connected to a Magic Keyboard or something similar. It’s more than capable of handling Pro style apps so I’m surprised they don’t make it capable to do so.

I think its great and having the full scale monitor experience was my favorite thing for the new OS. My biggest disappointment was that it was only for M1 iPads. I've always went for the older generation iPad pros for way better value, now if I want to use the main new features, I need to pay for a super expensive m1 iPad

I think Apple's strategy has been to push a single platform at a time. Remember just two years ago, we were ready to ditch Macs in favor of more powerful iPads for our daily drivers. (Before that the iPads were stale and we just wanted bigger iPhones.) And then M1 MacBook Air, and the Macs began to spring back to prominence. Slowly but surely, we have at least one device from every platform that we now can't live without, and with the continuous focus on integration of the platforms with each other, we're just more locked inside our happy little Apple ecosystems. Tim Cook is the world's greatest pusher...

Thank god this is only available on M1. I don't even want to try to explain this to my parents.
