I’ve been searching for this video everywhere and no one has made this kind of review. THANK YOU! Do you know if the Universal Audio Apollo Twin will work with it using Rosetta?
Hi, much welcome Nolan. You can check my website for software compatibility. www.morningdewmedia.com/should-you-buy-a-new-macbook-with-apple-m1-silicon-cpu-for-music-production/ I believe Universal Audio is working on arm64 builds. But Appolo / Luna / UAD does not support M1 or Big Sur atm. Apogee got it working, but need to work on arm64 version of their Maestro software. THanks!
Yeah the M1 is a really nice step from old intel tech. Less heat, better performance. And memory in thr same package as CPU. Hopefully we can see similar leaps from other manufacturers too so everyone get to try this insane tech. Thanks Auggy! 🌞🥳
Wow, this is really promising. I can’t afford a new Mac right now, and can’t use a new one until uad is ready, but when it is time to upgrade looks like it will be a good one.
Yes absolutely. The Third party plugins I tried do run fine through Rosetta translation. Although they would run much faster when they arrive with native arm64 builds from the devs.
Bitwig already acknowledged it and working on native support of M1 processors. Thankfully Bitwig code does not need significant modifications to actually run M1 processor so in a few month we will have best daw running on this machines.
Hi Aleksandr, I know they have it in dev-pipe (link is in my article), but it's a small development team. And yes, the code is more recent / modern as Bitwig is a quite new software. And they alreay got builds for three platforms, so I'm sure they are able to compile a working arm64 in a near future. I'm happy though as long as they get a version out. Most DAW manufacturers collect info about their customers, and I hope many people downloaded the MAC version of Bitwig, so they know they need to pump it out fast. ;)
Hi Russ i recommend you to give a listen to Carbon Based Lifeforms. His live set on ozora festival 2017 will be a good start. You can find that video here in RU-vid.
Just found your channel ... the video was very helpfu ... so professionally shared ... I have SUBSCRIBED and look forward to your channel ... thank you again ... very much appreciated ....
Welcome onboard my friend. Happy to hear you like the quality and content I put out. Hope you will find much inspiration in here and on my website! Cheers! 🥳🎅
That was really frustrating.. you removed the visibility of all performance meters when you had Diva instantiated.. this is exactly what we needed to see.. how much cpu an x86 and very cpu heavy instrument is using on M1, compared to native X86. We need to be able to determine if users of 3rd plugins primarily, like myself for example, will have a decent time on M1. I barely use anything in Logic's own toolbox. Ok maybe Alchemy, occasionally.
Congrats for the video. It was precious. My doubt is about latency of midi controller/keyboard. Is it able to support a live performance according to you? Compliments again for the video
Absolutely. Latency is as good as it gets. Just make sure to use a proper audio interface. I tried, Apogee Duet 2 & Steinberg UR22 mk2 so far and they both worked just fine. Thanks Alessio, happy to hear you enjoy the video. Yes, the video is indeed going great! I'm glad after all the hard work I invested into this channel.
Glad my Apple M1 for Music Production video was helpful Mathias! The new MacBook Pros are just insane. Hope third party developers start to really push their arm64 versions as fast as possible. 🌞
Yes as I mentioned in the video, if you are working in anything outside Logic it can be problematic. So wait 6-8 months and see if developers have adopted and compiled arm64 versions of their software. I think they are going to transition, Macs are crucial tools for many designers, producers and videomakers. Glad u like the video. Thanks! 🌞🥳
But I bet we can see quite a few plugins and hardware adapted to M1 & arm64 already within the coming months. The potential is awesome! Yeah, great idea, maybe I should do a Reaper exclusive video and show it it holds up. Thanks Bojan!
Thank you very much for this review on such a hot topic, Mattias! I believe, I'm watching it a little bit out of order, as we already used to discuss this during your stream about Apple M1 and music production, which was the first one I luckily be in time to see on air =) But anyway, additional details in this video are very interesting. Indeed, in terms of Logic Pro the performance is quite remarkable, basically on par or even better, than on Core i7. So interesting, how they reach that! I'm non-Mac user, but this transition is still interesting, though I'm quite critical on the results. But hey, it works just fine! :) Hopefully, all the other everyday or music production software would be as fast and optimized. As for the current situation on Apple M1, as you mention, Logic Pro + native plugins only for music production, it's pretty much similar to my own case, where I'm basically locked with Bitwig + native plugins running on GNU/Linux =) And seriously, I wouldn't say it harmed my skills, honestly! Less is more, as you say, and when you're locked with a limited number of instruments, which may be not the most comfortable ones you're going to work with, but still powerful enough for any task you need to do, it gives you many fruitful hours of learning and actually opens very much of free space in quite familiar fields. I think, it's a very useful experience itself. Again, I've been quite hidden the recent weeks, but I'm still here and just want to use a chance to say my warmest wishes for you and your family for this New Year already coming, my friend! Hope it would be healthy and inspiring for you and for all of us, with new ideas and new pleasant moments! Happy New Year, Mattias!
Yes I find the performance exceed the i7 of my MBP 15" 2016 when running Logic Pro X. Also when running VS Code for a web app I'm building for a client. Yes, there is a arm64 build of VS COde. which is awesome! We will probably see arm64 cpus on the PC side soon too. NI just released a beta of Native Access which let us install the NI plugins on Apple M1, but they still run as x86 translated via Rosetta 2 to arm64 = non performant. But we can still run them which is great. I hope NI has a quick flow to push out the native arm64 builds early this year. Oh yes, less is more. Limited possibilities force us to learn what we got and get really good at those tools. It's so hard to be a master of all 400000 softwares out there. I totally agree it's a useful experience to anyone sitting on 8 HDDs with 10000 sample libs. Thanks a million for the kind and warm new years wishes. We have had a blast here. And finally finished the Cambodian song. ;) Will try to push it out asap. All the best back on you Alexey. Hope 2021 is a successful year for you, your family and in all the work and music you get into. Have a superb weekend!
@@MattiasHolmgren Thank you very much for your detailed answer and kind wishes, Mattias! Nice to know NI does some steps for M1 support already, though yes, they have a big range of products with very deep and, I'd say, long and well developed optimisation for the CPU in hand, so the process would obviously take time. Let's wait and see! Can't wait to hear the full version of finished Cambodian song! As you know, that's my favourite one of yours :) Hope it's just in time for the start of the spring!)
Thank you for this video. I had no idea the M1 is only compatible with Logic Pro. I was looking to use it with Reason 11. Glad I found this and now know. Thanks again
Glad I could help! Yes, I just read at twitter that Sean, the developer of Valhalla effects (Valhalla Room reverb etc) just compiled a beta version of his plugins for arm64 = Apple M1 ready. Can't wait for them to drop. Yeah I don't know about Reason or Propellarheads. How far they are in development... in this transition to arm64. The old intel macs will probably stick around for a long time anyway. But the M1 processor surely is some insane power...with less heat generated. Love the new tech so far!
Yes I have a feeling that Reason and other DAWs won’t be ready till their newer future version, eg Reason 12. It’s a shame but maybe the price of an M1 MacBook will be reduced by the time other DAWs are compatible.
Yeah me too, I don't really use my MacBook Pro 15" 16GB (2016) in the video for that much music prod. I use it more for app-dev, graphics design and some smalled music projects. I use a proper desktop for most music prod. But the M1 is just neat for music prod since it doesn't run hot. Never heard/notice the fan of the new Pro yet. ;)
Mattias Holmgren why do you recommend a MacBook Pro rather than purchasing a MacBook Air? Does Mac book Air includes Logic Pro X? From Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 Btw thank you very much for the video..
Ive had bad experience with the less powerful air models in the past. Thats why I always go for the Pro models which have slightly higher performance. But I think the MacBook Air M1 is powerful. But again, I went for the Pro to be sure. :) The Pro has the touchbar, and better cooling for longer demanding work. Its totally up to you what to grab. Logic Pro goes for $199.99. It May seem pricey but you get free upgrades and The bundled content is endless. Very high quality content for a DAW. Thanks, glad you enjoy my videos! 🥳🌞🎅
@@AlemSchitz oh, that is a demo music piece I did for this Apple M1 video. I will complete the song and then release it. You can find my music on Spotify, Bandcamp etc. links are always in the video description. Thanks!
It’s probably going to take Native Instruments forever to update their software. I’d probably hold off for now and go with 2nd generation of M1 (M2?) powered units. I’m dependent on too many third party plugins.
Hi phero, yeah I dunno how much effort it is to recompile and target arm64 rather than x86. I've done plenty of iOS and android apps but never compiled for both x86 and arm64 so I don't know the obstacles. But it shouldn't be too hard. But there are TONS of software to go through for NI.... You can obviously copy the files over from an x86 machine and run the plugins in Rosetta translated versions. But they will work a bit crippled...and not optimized. I'm a Logic user so I made the move. Gonna keep the MBP 15" (2016) though because..... 15". ;) But you know me, I love new tech and I just had to see the performance of this neat little package. I'm blown away.
Hi, you can watch my other videos on the Apple M1 tech and get a broader perspective. FL studio, Logic and Bitwig Studio runs just fine on M1 macs. Bitwig 4 (in beta) just got native arm64 support which is awesome! 🌞Happy to inspire!
This track seems very close to LoFi , Albeit minus a few key ingredients, but very nice chill track, (I too, am guilty, as many other comments, I came for info on the Apple laptops, but I also really enjoyed the music !)
Thanks, yeah maybe a bit LoFi inspired. Chill stuff. I'm happy to hear so many viewers enjoy the little music pieces I throw into my videos! Happy friday! 🌞🎉
Ended up returning my m1 mbp since it was incompatible with my Roland FA07 workstation. Ended up getting a used 2016 mbp just like the one in this video fir $1000 on eBay which should be good enough at almost half the price of the m1. I’ll wait for m1 to get better software support and opt for the 16 inch MacBook when that comes out
The 15" from 2016 is definitely an awesome computer, thats why Im keeping that one too. Though Im using the M1 with Logic and for app development and its working great for me. 🥳🌞
It just seems like a bad time to upgrade to a Mac. It’ll take a few months for the plug-ins to update. But if I get the intel-based models they’ll be outdated in a few years. I need a computer NOW for projects. It’s a tough decision
Hi Sum. It is indeed. I was happy to see Valhalla DSP developer already begun compiling for arm64 so I guess we will see some third party plugs quite soon. Apple M1 tech is really exciting. The MBP with intel still holds up too. IMO generally the problem with laptops is often the heat. And with the new M1 running arm64 builds (like Logic Pro) we don't see much heat which is great. Hope you get sorted out what MB to grab.🌞⛄
I’m having the exact same problem. I’ve ordered the m1 13” 16gb but on the fence about cancelling and getting a 16” but put off by how hot and noisy it is...
Yes this whole video was recorded with my old Steinberg UR22 mk2 audio interface. I didn't connect my more recent audio interfaces because I didn't want to break them (I let the manufacturers do the hard work and confirm before I try). USB class compilant does indeed work fine. But some gear have extra softwares like Apogee Maestro and it's not yet arm64 so I have to wait before connecting the Duet 2. NI forums did also previously talk about problems using Komplete Audio 6 with M1 so I though I should wait with that one too. Though I think it should be fine now. I'm testing more gear later today. Thanks!
Hi Marvin. Yeah I do recommend 16GB, I'm using the 8GB model (in the video) on a day to day basis for most of my work now, and 8GB is a little on the low side. I'm running many apps at the same time. VIdeo editing, graphics, music prod, VS code etc. So yes, I always try to go with at least 16 GB on laptops. But with the M1 I wanted to see what the 8GB model was capable of, and it was also a little bet since I ordered it very early and wasn't sure I was going to be able to use it for super heavy work...but it goes a long way. ;)
Latency has never been an issue anymore with modern audio interfaces and recent computers. At least for me and the gear I use. Yes Scarlett is a fine iterface. Apple M1 audio latency is the same as on the intel cpus.
What sort of battery life are we looking at? Apparently you can get 16-20 hours for something like video playback/web browsing with the screen brightness at 50%, but i'm struggling to find examples of the battery life under more intense CPU usage. I assume less CPU usage = more battery life but i'd like a real world example, like 1 hour of logic pro = approx 40% battery consumption for example
I can confirm battery life is extremely potent compared to older generation intel cpu based MacBook Pros. We all know OBS is super draining application when it comes to power consumption. And as mentioned in the video I did use both OBS, Logic and webserver running during the making of this video. I even edited the video on the M1 in the latest Davinci Resolve 17.1 Beta arm64 version. I don't have exact hour specs from my usage as I didn't think about writing it down. But I did notice the power-meter didn't move much during the video making. I will come back to real world example of Logic Pro battery usage, it wasn't really fair at all to run OBS at the same time. hehe
@@MattiasHolmgren The efficiency of the M1 chip seems really impressive. I'm basically looking the most battery efficient laptop I can for a portable workstation. If I can get 4-5 hours of logic, or bitwig in the future i'd be super impressed.
Totally know what you mean Cody. But that is basically what you get with the M1. ;) As long as you use pure arm64 coded software it's running cold = less power consumption = significant more time to work on your music. ;) Atm, I'm developing a webb application for a client while demoing the VS Code - Exploration app (arm 64 beta version) and it's running blazingly fast. Compiling code is speedy! I can already recommend video-editors, designers, composers AND webb developers to use the M1 powered MacBook Pros for pro work as long as they stick to arm64 ready apps. And the whole Affinity app-suite (Photo, Designer, Publisher) is ready for BigSur and M1 and they are working like a charm. This is truly a milestone in innovation. IMO it's a huge leap compared with the older intel generation. Finally work without heat. ;)
Tjena Mattias! Klockren video, stort tack! En kort fråga, behöver man maxa & köpa 16gb ram på M1 2020 eller räcker det med 8gb som i ditt fall? Jag gör liknande relativt enkla projekt som dig själv med ex. Serum, tredjepartseffekter, stock plugins osv. Vad tror du? Tack på förhand!😊 / Max
Hi Max, yes 8 GB is enough for smaller projects. No worries. But I would have bought a 16GB version if the 15" (or 16") was available. Unfortunately Apple chose to release 13" models with M1 cpu to begin with... Enjoy the M1 it's an awesome laptop! Gott nytt år!
Great vid! A bit late but for a complete beginner If you had to choose between logic pro or fl studio which would you pick? (I have a M1 laptop btw) Also do I need an audio interface if I don't use any external instruments or mics?
Hi no worries, Logic and FL Studio has a bit different workflows and I would probably recommend Logic before FL if you are going to work with audio recording. If you are solely gonna work with mostly midi and vst instruments FL Studio is also a great choice. Both offer superb plugins and sounds (OOB) out of the box, but yeah my nr 1 choice would be Logic of the two. If you don’t intend to record external audio you basically dont need an external audio interface on a Mac because they give you very low latency OOB. 😃 Some producers dont even use a midi keyboard, but I do recommend one because its great to learn to play some keys along the way. What kind of music / genres do you want to produce? 🔥
hi mattias, i have a question about whether it is enough to buy the macbook pro m1 with 8gb ram and 512ssd, or is it better to go up to 16gb ram ?. I need to produce tech house music (ableton). It is my first macbook, since I am from Chile and only in my country is the 8gb ram mac available. Thanks a lot!!
If you are solely using Logic Pro, yes. But if you want to be able to use third party software I would say, wait! Until more software plugins are compatible and fully compiled for arm64. 🌞
Hej Mattias! Awesome video!
Hey Niclas, in this video (excerpt from yesterdays live stream) I have recorded additional guitar audio tracks in the Logic project to further test the performance. Bear in mind I am also live streaming from the same Apple M1 MacBook Pro in this new video which is sick: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-L3sywURWm6s.html Enjoy!
Thank you. This explains why my Novation Launchkey 49 does not fully work with Logic Pro X. Its not fully compatible with Apple Silicon. Thanks Apple 🙄
Hi Joshua, Sad to hear the Launchley 49 does not work with Apple M1. Check Novation website regarding updating firmware etc. Hope they get updates out soon! Good luck! 🌞
Hi Gio, for my projects the 8GB version is performing very well. if you tend to make large projects with many multisampled orchestral instruments 16GB (or more) is preferred. If you need many libraries installed on the system disc 512GB SSD is also good. Whats your current setup? 🌞
I don't see any music production, just music manipulation. How do you produce music...with what instruments and what audio interface do you use to insert this music from your instruments into the M1?
I used Steinberg Ur22 mk2 in these tests and it worked just fine. There is a sequal to this video available where I recorded 11 guitar tracks and some extras. Give it a watch ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-L3sywURWm6s.html
I did watch it...good job. I have a Scarlett and I am waiting for my M1 and am concerned if the Scarlett audio interface will work along with my Logitech C920 web cam. I had a UR22 and it had a lot of hiss where the Scarlett has none...FYI.
@@apostolicbible1 yeah I never use the Ur22 mk2 anymore, thats why I brought it in for this test because I didn't want to break my Apogee Duet 2,or the Komplete Audio 6 (I heard it could actually break... but, rumours.) Anyways most modern Audio interfaces are all USB class compliant devices so they should work just fine. Whatever you choose. I did have some issues with my little M-Audio Keystation mini 32 which didn't want to show up.
Yeah, I will do a Vital video soon. Was too excited to not jump in an do a Apple M1 video. I'm thrilled of the performance in such a small package! Vital is...vital to every music producer. ;) Thanks, glad you enjoy my content AN7!
Still waiting for an official statement from Steinberg about the future support for apple silicon M1. Don't understand why it's taking so long. It seems that the VST SDK has already been ported to apple silicon.
I compiled a list of the manufacturers (Steinberg included) in this article www.morningdewmedia.com/should-you-buy-a-new-macbook-with-apple-m1-silicon-cpu-for-music-production/ I quote "...Looking forward, Steinberg software and hardware will support Apple Silicon-powered Mac computers but as yet it is too early to provide more information..."
Hi, I never noticed the fan while working on the MacBookPro M1 so far. ;) If I don't use a CPU demanding software like OBS (like while recording the this video) the computer never gets any warm. = no need for the fan to get started. Glad you like my little Apple M1 test video. Thanks! The
I have the Macbook Pro M1 and i produced for entire days and surprisingly the fans NEVER started running. I don't even know how they're supposed to sound like, never heard them since i bought them. Apple is amazing for musicians nowadays, their M1 machines are just perfect, pure silence. I saw on RU-vid, it takes more than 10 continuous minutes of 100% video Stress Benchmarking test to make the fans start, you will never produce at 100% cpu because that's when the audio will crackle/glitch. My projects never reached 100% for 10 minutes constantly lol, that's probably the fans never started running.
Nice video ! I was wondering what cables you are using to connect with proM1 coz they have only type C input, I wanted to connect my audient id4 and a hard disk
You can use any type of USB C hub. The hub connects via USB-C from the Macbook Pro to several old gen USB-2 & USB-3 ports. In my studio office I use a Bellkin Thunderbolt Dock Core to connect extra display, hds etc. Its a bit expensive but I have 3 other cheaper usb-c hubs. They all work fine with the M1. Here is a clip i did on the Dock Core hub - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2wwnZJdE-Co.html
alittle late but would you recommend the base model 13in m1 for logic pro x use ? would like something that would last alittle but also be strong enough * beginner to intermediate experience
How about running cpu intensive polyphonic synths and dsp effects like neural dsp or other amp simulators or multi and mastering plugins with oversampling for extended amounts of time? Lots of other videos show overheating and throttling.
Hi Remi, As mentioned in my Apple M1 videos is that most third-party software isn't compiled for arm64 yet, so it isn't really accurate to show them off yet. Because their performance will be miles better when they are natively compiled for arm64, rather than translated via Rosetta 2. Although they do work, they are not nearly as performant. I haven't had any overheating issues though while using any third-party plugs etc. But I do notice that the CPU roof is hit quite early when running x86 translated DAWs like Ableton Live, FL Studio etc. On the bright side I read a tweet from Sean Costello, that he has begun compiling the plugins for arm64. So we will probably see Valhalla suite of plugins M1 ready quite soon. ;) Looking forward to 2021! Thanks for writing Remi!
Loved the video, very interesting! What MacBook would you recommend for music production with loads of third party plugins? I have 2018 13” Mac with 8GB of RAM and it overheats very quickly.
Hey, regarding overheating issues: What DAW are you working with on the MacBook? The 15" probably has a larger area for cooling. I've only run 15" in the past and have not had overheating issues (only if I run Fl Studio which seems to be more intense on the graphics / cpu). If I run Logic Pro I never run into heating issues. Bitwig Studio also runs good. I don't yet recommend the MacBook Pro M1, until more developers ship their plugins in native arm64 builds....unless you run Logic Pro X, like me. Then it's all fine..... ;) I still keep my MacBook Pro 15" (2016) seen in this video because the larger screen and it still holds up very fine for music production and all other tasks too. It's just that the new M1 MacBook Pro runs much smoother with less heat. ;)
@@MattiasHolmgren I use Logic Pro! It heats up quite fast and the battery on my mac had stopped working because of it.. if I had owned my mac for 1 more month it would have cost me €600 to fix it.. And now I’m having the same heating issues even with the new battery and new bottom case.. I’m going to upgrade to a 16” MacBook with 16GB of RAM, do you think that will solve my problem?
Yes, Im pretty sure it will work better regarding heat. I really hope devs release native arm64 builds early 2021 so we can make the most out of these Apple Silicon M1 powered little beauties. 🥳🌞
@@MattiasHolmgren how much RAM do you have on the mac you use for producing? I wonder what the difference is between 16GB and 32GB.. I don’t know what software would need 32 or even 64😂
Hey Mattias, new to your channel and am loving this review. My question is, will this 8gb 512gb 8 core be fine for beginner music production? I'm new to Mac and just bought this model today. I'll be learning to track for a while but will inevitably get my band up and running soon. It's just a metal band with some plug-ins and tracking, so do you think this will be enough or would you recommend the 16gb version?
For just Recording audio tracks (band) 8GB is enough. Its only if you use huge demanding plugins it gets problematic. Thanks for the kind feedback. I Will buy the 16GB myself when there is a 16" version of the MBP with Apple M1. I always go for as much ram as possible. But I work with tons of demanding tasks, video editing, graphics, app dev, Orchestral Scoring etc. Again 8GB is enough for smaller projects.
Hey, I have a question on film scoring. How do you make sure that your piece fits in properly with the scene. Its a stupid question but im new to this. for example my 8 bar piece maybe 15 seconds but the scene is 10 seconds. do you automate the bpm to make sure it fits right or do you change something else? I'm kinda confused about fitting things in properly and when scoring a film do you change the key or stick to just one key throughout the film? thank you
Hi Anirudh. Good to hear from you. I always begin analyzing the scene and tap a suitable tempo. Before doing any music I look at where the cue should begin and how it would end. If it's important that the music stops at the end of the scene. Most of the times you can just fade the music down at the end. Yes you can sometimes adjust tempo slightly (in the beginning or the end) to make it fit. Most of the times I make the tempo adjustment a bit before the actual cue hits (starts) so the viewer don't "hear" the tempo / signature shift. I would never timestretch a music cue just to make it fit exactly. If you are writing a custom score you make sure your cues map up accurately to the scenes of the film. But don't overdo it, or it will sound awkward. It's called "Mickey Mousing" when you try to map everything that happens on screen to the music. You don't do that. Music should most of the times just be subtle and help emotions come across. Of course we all do this a bit differently. Don't use the same key for a whole film. You want to make use of contrast and let the music evolve somewhat during the film. Go into different places. But don't make large jumps in the same cues. Do it subtle. The best scores, is the scores you don't know they are there. You just feel the emotions of the film come across. Hope the info helps!
thank u so fucking much !!! Im just getting into music production N i didnt wanna play myself in terms of quality so im researching M1's and regular pro Im soooo glad u went over compatible DAWs cause the one im using is not compatible whew, saved me so much stress. regular macbook it is , although this M1 is pretty impressive.
Make sure to watch my more recent episodes on the M1. Things habe changed and Bitwig Studio is fully M1 compatible. FL studio works great on it too. Thanks for watching and the feedback! 🌞🥳🦊
First research the plugins you use are compatible. Are you using Waves for example? To me its all M1. The tech is miles better than intel.... And cheaper. 🌞🦊
Hello Matthias, thanks for the video. Which interface do you use? Which one can you recommend for the new M1? I am new to music production, acutally I only do rap, but now try to build my own home studio. (Using logic) With the new M1 Chip - what do I have to check before buying microfon, interface (that's all I need)? Sorry for the questions but you videos are very helpful, you seem to be the guy thats knows that;) Best wishes
Hi P Richie! For the initial tests I was using a simple old Steinberg Ur22 mk2 audio interface. I also tried connecting the Apogee Duet 2 (Mac/iPad) audio interface and it worked without issues. For microphone it's not that big problem as you probably connect the mic via XLR-cable to your audio interface. The audio interface is more important regarding compatiblity. First check the developer website if they got BigSur / M1 compatibility. I put together a compatibility list at my website here: www.morningdewmedia.com/should-you-buy-a-new-macbook-with-apple-m1-silicon-cpu-for-music-production/ It doesn't contain every manufacturer, but at least a few. If you grab a USB microphone, it's probably gonna be USB class compliant device. And that should work (for the most part) out of the box as it's a USB standard the manufacturer follows. Cheers, // Mattias
@@Patrickrichter95 logic comes w autotune plugins already, you should be fine if you're starting out bc I'm literally where you're at too. you should get a midi controller for convenience and if you want to make beats or instrumental music. My m audio air 192 | 6 works perfectly w my m1 mbp so no compatibility issues there. Midi controllers also get recognized easily (except for my very old clavinova digital piano which i plug via midi to the interface and then gets recognized but you won't have this issue w a normal modern contoller)
Hi friend. thanks for your videos. Do you recommend the macbook air m1 to record and mix albums? (audio production). My idea is to work on 25-track projects between wav files and virtual instruments and various plug-ins. (7 per track approximately) in cubase or maybe in logic. will the macbook air m1 be enough? If that's enough, would 8g of ram be okay? or would 16 be necessary?
Hi Fer, It's really hard to give an approximation on that, because it really depends on how heavy plugins you load up on those tracks. Are you using heavy Waves plugins? I've done several projects with 25 tracks (and several plugins on each track) on the MBP 13" Apple M1 without problems. It's working out really good. But everyone is using different plugins and I try to stick to native Logic Pro X plugins and arm64 built plugins (except maybe a few instances of Serum / Vital / Zebra 2 / Diva) and it's working great. I always recommend at least 16 GB for music production.. But I'm waiting for the 16" model of the MBP before going 16 GB. 8 GB has been enough on this little 13" MBP, but I wouldn't load up tons of heavy sampled instruments. Cubase is not recommended on Macs with the Apple M1 cpu as Steinberg does not yet support the arm64 architecture. Cheers!
Yeah it's an annoying issue. I always need to remember to pack a proper hub -> USB-C to USB-A (Usb 2 /3). At least they should include at least 4 USB-C ports. Or 3 USB-C and 1 USB-A...but then again, future proof.
I know Native Instruments software isn't yet supported but do you think a Native Instruments S-Series Komplete Kontrol Keyboard would work within Logic? With all the functions like the adaptive LED lights & stuff? Their website says certain hardware isn't compatible with M1 or Big Sur yet but it makes no mention of Komplete Kontrol keyboards
Hi Jesse, as mentioned in the video Native Access isn't possible to install yet. You can of course probably move over the component, vst, vst3 files and get it running as x86 (Rosetta translated) plugins. Regarding the keyboards they should work as usual since it's Logics bundled scripts you are working with. But as you don't have Komplete Kontrol etc you can't really get the LED lights going and stuff. I will report more once I've fiddled with my Komplete Kontrol S61 mk2 etc with the MBP M1. ;) NI will probably take a few months before they get the first versions out (just a wild guess but they have a larga catalogue to fiddle with) Cheers!
Hi I just tried the Komplete Kontrol S61 mk2 with MBP 13" M1 and the only thing that works are: Keybed (yes you can play the keys), the two first rotary encoders send midi CC. Transpose +/-, touchstrip, 2x modwheels. The rest of the buttons are not responding to input. And Native Access is not possible to install on MBP under arm64. The screens do not show the midi-CC page, nor can you change screens on the Komplete Kontrol. So it's basically useless except for the keybed at the current state. I hope NI are quick to spit out arm64 compiled softwares and maybe a firmware update to the Komplete Kontrol and Komplete Audio 6 etc.
Hi Elias, I don't know how the mini is compared to the MacBook Pro. I feel the Pro is adequate device. Very good performance. But you might want to look at more RAM if you do heavy work. Like sample libs, big video editing projects
@@MattiasHolmgren I am still unsure to either get a air or mini and how big woudl be the difference in performance , and if teh air throttles down while teh minis fan kicks in
Hi Elias, my impression is that as long as you run native arm64 (M1 ready) apps extra cooling isnt really needed. The beauty of arm64 is that it runs instructions as RISC = reduced instruction set computing. Which means it takes one simple instruction at a time which generate less heat than the x86 Intel cpus which runs CISC = complex instruction set computing, which generates more heat due to breaking down more complex instructions. Air is portable while mini is not. So maybe thats a bigger question. What you really need. Hope my videos are helpful. Though I wish I had the Air to compare the Pro with. 🥳🎅🌞
@@MattiasHolmgren I am most time in the studio but the ability to take all my stuff with me would be a nice thing. All new M1 macs use the same CPU, RAM , SSD technology no ? Why can one be faster than the other ?
@@eliaszerano3510 this time I wanted the extra cooling, touchbar, 8 cores and the Pro also has better speakers and mic onboard. Its probably a very small difference though. But I did really enjoy the speakers for the first time in a laptop. Great tech indeed.
Hehe yeah all devs seem to work on arm versions. Maybe compiled executables for Linux will be close too. Im surprised only Reaper which is one of the smaller players had arm64 beta already. 🥳🌞
Yes I do sometimes use the touchbar when running Logic Pro for small mix tasks. And for adjusting volume, screen light etc. But yes it's kinda gimmick IMO. I would rather vote that Apple added multitouch to the displays on the MBPs but then they would break the iPad industry they got going so it's not gonna happen. :/ 😉🌞
Hi thanks for the info. I am considering a Mac Mini for my next DAW computer. Would you strongly advise the 16gb over the 8gb model? I understand the 8gb M1 had issues with SSD over use but perhaps this is not actually a massive problem???. I use Studio One which has just become M1 native and I am not in a hurry to upgrade, my ancient pc is managing ok just about for now. Super thanks Craig
No, at the current state of FL Studio, which is not arm64 compatible, I would NOT advice you to use the Apple M1 MacBook Pro. FL Studio runs, but its very limited and cpu goes high. When image-line releases a proper arm64 build of FL Studio it will probably run super good. 🌞🥳
@@MattiasHolmgren Yeah bro hoping they release it as soon as possible really impressed with m1 built in Apple product it would take music production to another level btw thanks for ur advice bro😊
@@parvathigutta7936 just brought the new Mac yesterday an Fl20 sucks... Everything is clipping and there is always wired a noise.. did someone know when image line will do smth against it?..i dont want to wait months.. can i go back to Catalina and wouls this help?
Thats because on Apple M1 Big Sur translates the x86 app to arm64 code... But it does not become optimized code. So it doesn't run efficient = crackling. Cpu spikes on certain plugins. I managed to compose a track on my MBP Apple M1 at around 35%cpu usage so its definitely possible to work it. If you are careful.
Hi Mattias, I'm thinking about switching to Logic. I wanted to know if 8GB was enough to produce, mix and master a Pop track in one project (with plugins like API Waves) Would be a dream! Thanks again 💯
Hi CMS, honestly, I have little experience with Waves plugins on Apple M1 since I dont use waves plugins since ages back. Check their support FAQs etc. Thanks!
Mattias: if using only Logic and native plugins, would 8gb ram be enough with M1? My MBP -14 i5 8gb has done its time and in thinking about getting a new MacBook for my hobby level music interest. I cant go for the Pro with 16gb, but the Air with 16gb is what i can afford.
Yes 8GB of RAM with his new tech is enough for basic hobby music making as shown in the video with my example. But if you want to work with big sampled Orchestral libraries like Spitfire, Eastwest, 8DIO etc via Kontakt sampler... things can get rough. Thanks Mikael.
@@MattiasHolmgren thank you 🙏 i guess the same applies to the Logic sample liberaries then? Because there is orchestral, alchemy and so on in Logic to. Or are they not ”sample”?
Yes they are but Logic sample library is VERY Light-weight so they work fine. The third party libraries I talked about are super huge and not lightweight.
I still hesitate between the 13" and the 16" for music production. Which one should I buy? Because I kind of travel a lot but I am wondering if a 13" isn't too small for music production.
Nah I think the 13" is good enough size. Especially if u travel alot. I dont travel much recently obviously, but when I do bring up the 15" it feels like a giant. The 13 is very lightweight too. Never regret the purchase. I use this M1 every day now for majority of my work. 🌞
Absolutely, just make sure to grab a USB-C Multiport Adapter -> USB, HDMI och USB-C. It's a bit annoying that the 13" only has two USB.C ports. That said, it's easy to attach a USB-C dongle hub to get more ports. ;) I think the M1 supports one extra external monitor. But I often just use the iPad via sidecar when I'm streaming via OBS or whatever.
So there's no way of using other DAWs like Albeton on the new macbook right now? Use Albeton for my music production course so I need to use other DAW software. Would you happen to know when they will be supported?
Yes, you can use Ableton but it's not as "performant" as the real arm64 compiled DAWs like Logic Pro. Live 10.1.35 and 11 are compatible with Apple silicon computers through Rosetta 2. So you can install Ableton just fine, but as I mention, it will not be using the complete power of the computer as if it was compiled to arm64 by Ableton. I hope they release a native arm64 version soon. I like to play with Live too! ;) I don't have any date yet. Will keep posted here, and on my website as soon as it's available: www.morningdewmedia.com
@@MattiasHolmgren ohhhh ok that makes a lot more sense! Thank you for your help man! I don't mind if it doesn't use all the computer power as long as it works, so should be fine for me :) thank you so much man!
Question seeking answer: If one were to be moving up from a Macbook 2014..using Garageband tons..wanting to use Garageband and move up to Logic Pro..by getting a Macbook Pro 13 inch M1 or Mini Mac M 1 16 GB version..which would be the better choice..and would you have less issues when recording up to even 10 tracks, some midi some wav organic instruments guitars at a track time of maybe 3 to 6 ish minutes? I've seen reviews where the fan on the new Macbook runs hot when working on it gaming or vid production..and fan noise is more than on the mini mac. If you are using it just for recording with Garageband and maybe Logic and don't have huge apps, plugin ram eaters users..will the Macbook 13 work ? I have done tons with my 13 inch Macbook pro..one was 2010 and this one is 2014...and I just want to make sure I don't overheat the M 1 ...as it should be more powerful and reliable and faster than what I am working with..right?
Hi, when working in Logic Pro the fan never kicks in for me...not on the M1 8Gb, nor on the M1 MAX 32GB. The fan only kicks in when running extremely heavy video editing projects in Davinci Resolve when I have like 6x 4K video clips running simultaniously. The M1 does never overheat. It's not like the old intel gen. ;) It would not overheat in the projects you describe with +10 tracks some midi, vst plugins etc. The 13" is really a wonderful machine, tight and light package. I always go portable so no minis for me.
@@MattiasHolmgren What is I really do appreciate the information and that totally makes sense. I have one more important question to ask you to get your feedback... If I can get the renewed 8 GB m1 mini Mac from Apple and the $99 care for 3 years... And find a perhaps a HP affordable Asus monitor for around 150 that has HDMI and a McNally keyboard and mouse then I can hook up to USB along with my focusrite 2i2 Which I utilize a little six USB bay with right now hooking it into my old 2014 MacBook 13-in.. for the savings and money and knowing that an 8 gig RAM m1 would probably be sufficient better than the 2014 8 gig RAM... And I like to have a at least a 19 or 21-in screen and have a little bit more room do you think the refurbished renewed for around 1200 for the care and the unit in tax and so forth plus the 150 for the monitor and around 85 for the mouse and the keyboard and miscellaneous cables would be better than getting the 13 inch m1 MacBook pro since I'm primarily using it just at home and I don't need to travel with it?
My apologies for the long ramble... Basically if I'm going to use GarageBand and try and move up to logic pro possibly reason propeller head maybe some other plugins but keeping it simple... Doing from 10 to 15 tracks... PST's effects and so forth. Mm songs from you know 2 minutes to 6 minutes... Would it be safe to say that if I want a bigger screen and not the 13 in that the 8 GB m1 was 1 TB of internal storage refurbished renewed buy Apple with a $99 care for 3 years would be worthwhile?
Are you sure its just the external display causing the heating, not the apps you are using? How do u connect the external display, via a usb / hdmi hub? Or directly via thunderbolt?
Is there more latency to midi playback, i mean between you press the key and between it sounds? I ask that, cause maybe because the Rosetta translation it needs more time for it to process the sounds?
No, there is no extra latency. The apps are translated once during launch / installation from x86 to arm64 code. No additional translation happens later during runtime. So you have the same small latency as on any other Mac.
Hey! How long will i take that Image Line is possible to use.. Just brought the new mac and its so bad for Fl20... Everything is crackling and clipping...
Hi I am releasing a video showcasing / comparing the performance of FL Studio 20.8 on Apple M1 MBP vs Intel MBP. Check the video for more info. It will go live in about 6-7 hours. 🌞 Its hard to tell exactly when Image-Line will compile for arm64. No date.
@@MattiasHolmgren Intel will be way better rn without the native Fl version.. I pray for the Image-Line Team that they release a compatible Version ASAP. Do you think an Interface supports the performance of my Mac? I can w8 for 3 party vsts but I still want to make beats..
Hi, yes FL Studio x86 version works best with Intel x86 CPU. Regarding interface, it depends on what audio interface you referr to. All audio interfaces Ive tried so far have worked fine. Apogee Duet 2, Steinberg Ur22 mk2, Komplete Kontrol Audio 6.
Hi Prem. I've been running the Komplete Audio 6 mk2 with my M1 MacBook Pro lately and it worked fine. In my last video "How to tune the piano", all audio was recorded with this setup. ;)
Hi Enrico, CUBASE 11.0.20 is said to be compatible with Apple M1 via Rosetta translation according to Steinberg website. But bear in mind it's not natively compiled for the Apple M1 (arm64 architecture) so you might not get the same awesome boost in performance as you get in Logic. I don't use Cubase anymore though so I can't confirm it fully.
I have a mid 2019 MacBook pro with the finger print and magic keyboard 8BG ram 2 thunderbolt 1.4GHz Quad-core intel i5 HD with 2T external. Is it worth getting a 2020 MacBook Pro 13in 8-core 16-core neutral engine M1 processor? Would it be significantly better? Running Logic Pro x, Roland 88key, akai mpg mini and usb expansion. Also apogee duet 2.
Logic will perform better overall. But as mention in my Apple M1 videos there is still a big hole when it comes to supported third party plugins. So I would wait at least 6 months until the market has compiled more arm64 compatible plugins AND Apple releases even better M2s PR whatever. 2019 is still a powerful Machine. Even my MBP from 2016 is still a very capable music production unit. 🌞🎂
@@MattiasHolmgren Thank you so much for your quick response, $1,200 US off a friend for a 2020 barley used with 4 ports. 16Gb ram it's a difficult decision but i agree with 3rd party plugins. Fan noise would be less on the M1 regarding recording vocals? Overall valid points, thanks again Cheers from New Jersey! Trying to catch you being it's 420am here lol
@@MattiasHolmgren not yet though... It's just I'm starting a new project from scratch, so I can choose anything. Logic Pro is my go to environment. The M1 does look promising. But the security of a 10th gen i7 with 32GB RAM looks comforting :)
That's for another video Artur. Bitwig Studio isn't Big Sur nor M1 compatible yet. So it will only run in a degraded x86->arm64 translated mode which gets crippled. But I'll give it a shot as soon as I got time. FL Studio did run pretty well although it gets clogged up pretty fast as soon as you start working with plugins. Rosetta translation is just a quick fix until the developers do proper arm64 ready executables.
I was a bit surprised that Reaper was the only DAW that had forseen and made at least a beta version available for arm64 and the Apple M1. So BIG kudos to the Reaper devs.
@@MattiasHolmgren Definitely! Although it was pretty sure they're gonna be first, since they already have a version running on raspberry pi, which I think is arm?
