Apple Macintosh Classic Checkerboard Repair: First Attempt

A friend gave me this Apple Macintosh Classic. It had the well known checkerboard issue: the screen only shows a pattern. No startup sound, no disc activity, no fun. In this episode I try to solve the problem by replacing capacitors, searching for shorts and some other tricks. I'm not an expert at this but I want to show you what I tried and what I learned from it. Have fun watching!

don't be sorry for the failure. I'm glad I saw an old computer that looks inside how compact they put the components next to each other beautifully arranged. I can see the image in the emulator, but the nostalgia comes from the hardware. My opinion is to make a compilation of videos with failures .a man's satisfaction comes directly proportional to the work he has done for something.

Reflow the solder joints where the analog board connects to the motherboard. Worked for my Mac Plus.

These Macs use a memory-mapped display. What you see on the screen at startup is an indication of what is in RAM memory. A checkerboard pattern means your RAM memory is goofed up. Since these Macs used only tin-plated contacts on their RAM modules, corrosion was the major issue in the past.

I tested the logic board in a friend's mac Classic and that works fine. So the culprit has to be on the analog board...

@@DeBovenkamer if the issue isn’t the logic board you just have to spend time checking continuity and voltages on the analog board as well as replacing the parts that supposedly always fail like tda4605, 6n60 mosfet, and dp3 and dp4. The analog board in your friends is likely putting out higher voltages that may be enough to get around the issues of worn out polymer electrolytics on the logic board. When I tested my logic boards caps they were barely readable where as the analog caps were barely out of tolerance

You are welcome! I serviced the floppy drive btw. Logic board has been scrubbed with ipa,recapped and even dishwashed by me :)

Great video. I hope you come back to it. I'm currently restoring a Macintosh Classic. I don't have the screen issue but would love to see a good resolution.

I recently purchased one of these for my son and we had the same checkerboard displayed. I replaced the 1/2 AA lithium battery on the logic board and it works now. The board itself was in great condition with no evidence of corrosion. Maybe that will work for you as well.

Back in the days when I was working on Macs, almost 30 years ago, RAM had a lot to do with many issues. Have you any other ram you can change?

Ah man, ik zou enorm teleurgesteld zijn. Maar wel een leuke video! Misschien is het een idee om de bord schoon te maken met IPA? ik heb gelezen dat dit misschien kan helpen, maar weet het niet zeker :) Succes!

't Is balen maar ik hoop dat er een sequel komt! Heb al geschrobd met IPA en vanalles maar ik vrees dat het niet meer harder kan blinken.

Did you check the power supply voltages after recapping? Was there any improvement on the 12v line?

I did, no improvement... Also adjusted PP1: voltage was higher but still no 12v.

@@DeBovenkamerif you check the voltages without any load don't expect precision. Measure 12 and 5V from the floppy cable leaving board and HD power connected
